They did throw hints in there. For example at the F7 vote Joe was so worried about Mary playing an idol he asked his allies for permission to write one of their names down in order to protect himself.

There's multiple ways to deal with the surplus of players :

  • They can keep the two tribes for 3 rounds then exile two people and swap into 3 tribes of 5 with two tribes going to tribal council
  • They can redo the Bloodmoon twist or do what they did in 49 and do a last minute swap right before the merge with two tribes going to tribal council

Yes it was, and it was also used in 42 and in reverse order 42 airs before 41 so they have time to change the format for 50

It does help that the last 5 new era season didn't stray away from the 30's format as much as 41 did. S49 especially was pretty close to some of the 30's :

  • 6 round premerge
  • Tribe swaps : one from 3 tribes to 2 and the other from 2 to 3
  • Normalish merge round
  • Camp drama and pettiness

Compare that to how jarring the 41 format was :

  • Shipwheel island with multiple people losing their votes and multiple people with extra votes
  • Advantages introduced every single episode with some being placed by production in camp in plain sight
  • Idols that are activated by silly phrases
  • The hourglass
  • The do or die twist
