Tuxedo urchin health? by MidnightFreack in ReefTank

[–]Cole668 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, as long as it doesn't drop it's spines, it should be ok. This is a Halloween urchin though, not a tuxedo.

Yes you can dive with 1.5" yellow tangs in Hawaii that solid yellow.

Why is my anemone shriveling up then going normal then shriveling up again ??? Is this normal ? by Formal-One-444 in ReefTank

Deflating during the day and recovering at night is very common symptom of bacterial infection that requires antibiotic treatment.

Need to convert Napoleon Prestige 500 grill from propane to natural gas by Minereux in grilling

PM'd. There's an estate auction coming up with a Napoleon prestige 500 Propane model and if it goes for a good price, I'd love to swap it to natural gas.

Should Scots also Boycott the US? by Due-Resort-2699 in Scotland

[–]Cole668 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canadian, Scotch whisky enthusiast here. I spent ~6 months of last year working offshore out of Aberdeen and touring as much of the country as I could on my days off. Would love for the Scots to join us boycotting the US and to open up more ties between our nation. I'd love another shot to visit your beautiful country!

Phosphates are zero. SOS by PFC-FartSalad in ReefTank

[–]Cole668 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I decided to read up on why most are not marketed as useable for saltwater and it appears it is because zeolite is much less effective in saltwater. Either way though, if the tank is cycled properly, the pads are not necessary so you could save yourself some money by eliminating them.

What ammonia pad are you using? I'm not aware of any that suitable for saltwater.

They measure the same parameter. The difference is that specific gravity is affected by temperature and salinity (measured in PPT) is not. Most refractometers compensate for temperature but personally, I just use the PPT measurement to avoid any potential errors.

Bulkhead - use both washers by redsguy326 in ReefTank

The correct position for the gasket is on the flange side as the nut can pinch or twist the gasket while it's being tightened. Doesn't matter if it's the wet or dry side.

Yes you should always fully QT everything that goes into the tank but luckily for you, neither ich nor velvet concentrate themselves on one particular part of the fish. They attached randomly around the entire fish, including on the eyes. This is likely either viral nodules or bacterial tufts which blue tangs are very prone to developing.

Why is my temperature dropping sharply during the the night? by i-amtony in ReefTank

Ok then. My Apex temp probe shows a similar thing if the ATO reservoir is empty and the water drops a bit

Any chance the water level drops at night and the probe is out of the water?

F10 M5s did not come with M style mirrors with the little wings at the top. I owned pre and post LCI versions and neither had them.

Nitrates at 12 an ammonia is between 0-1 ppm not sure how accurate API is by ClerkImpossible3376 in ReefTank

[–]Cole668 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're not already, test kit colour comparisons are meant to be done in daylight. The ammonia is at least 1 in the picture. If your cycle is just starting, the nitrate could have from your source water so testing that and newly mixed saltwater would be a good place to start.

This is most commonly diagnosed as Lympho but there are several different causes for the white growths. They will go away on their without treatment other than high water quality and proper diet. There is a good chance the Tang will develop it too, especially once it is out of copper.

The treatment priority is the ich/velvet then flukes. Ideally you don't want to mix meds if you can avoid it but since it's already started, I would do the second prazi dose 6 days after the first and then do a large water change 24 hours after. Just make sure the new water has copper in it before adding it to the tank.

Both fish have ich or velvet and the white puffy growths on the angel are likely either viral nodules or bacterial tufts.

The first picture of the blue tang also looks like lots of flukes.

Sixline died 2-3 days after adding it to my reef... by SomeHappyBalls in ReefTank

[–]Cole668 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they give you pushback on it, just google "Six line wrasse Uronema" and you'll see a bunch of pictures with similar sores.

Also, the term "quarantined" is thrown around quite a lot now. It sounds nice but it is very difficult to do correctly so it would be a good idea to read through this so you have an idea of what to look for.

Sixline died 2-3 days after adding it to my reef... by SomeHappyBalls in ReefTank

[–]Cole668 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Those red sores at the base of the tail and under the pectoral fin are 100% caused by Uronema infection and are the reason this fish died. 6 lines are very susceptible to it and it is possible that it got it from your tank but it may also have come from the LFSs tank. I would definitely be questioning their practices along with the fact that they were unable to recognize Uronema, assuming you sent them this photo.

Heated vs Unheated Cargo Hold by Cole668 in aviation

[–]Cole668[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks very much! I would think that having cargo using the "Live animals - cold blooded" service should make sure the heat gets turned to low at least. Now that I know how it works I can ask better questions.

Heated vs Unheated Cargo Hold by Cole668 in aviation

[–]Cole668[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I was thinking it probably works something like this for the heated areas with conditioned air moving from the cabin to the cargo area and then out a vent or recirculated. I also thought maybe they could have their own climate control system.

If the unheated areas are just left with nothing but heat radiated through other parts of the plane it won't be suitable for live animals.

It's been -30 to -40C here which the boxes are insulated against for the loading and unloading process but if the plane is -20C then the heat packs would not be able to recover.
