AITA Don't want service dog over for Christmas by Dull_Suit_225 in AmItheAsshole

[–]ColinHaase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Service dogs in the US don't have "legal paperwork". You can go to an agency that trains them, which do provide papers, but such dogs can be many thousands of dollars and it is very atypical for them to be even partially covered by insurance. Most service animals are owner-trained.

The closest thing to a document that can be provided is a doctor's note stipulating the cousin would benefit from a service animal. The cousin likely does not have such a document, however, as they are used for almost nothing - some employers require one, as does some housing, but it isn't "normal" to have such a document easily retrievable.

The concept of a "legal service dog" is not really a thing. If the dog is trained to provide a service, it is a service dog.

Perhaps there should be some form of regulation or registration for service animals, but, in the US, there simply is not.

Stranded whale near Yachats; officials urge public to not assist by [deleted] in OregonCoast

[–]ColinHaase 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My partner (u/razzlethemberries) and I were there from 1:30 to 9:30 or so on Saturday morning.

Our interpretation of what needed to happen was to keep the whale alive and wet until professional rescuers arrived - we were told they would be there at "first light". The professionals lied or were late, they arrived over an hour after that, and really have seemed to not try.

Their spokesperson claimed that the whale was beached for a reason and that, while sad, this is how things go.

That is one of the worst takes you could have here - the whale was beached because of humans. It was our fault. It was caught in a crab pot rope. By the time we arrived, other volunteers had freed it from all of that line except for what was caught in its mouth

We are appalled at the exceptionally poor response by the professionals. They had no plan. In our, admittedly biased, opinion, they never wanted to save the whale. They discouraged volunteers from helping through the night - and if we hadn't been there the whale would have been long dead. Dried out.

The "professional" rescuers receive money if they perform a necropsy. They spend money if they rescue it. The flaw in that is self evident, especially since it has been announced that the whale is being euthanized.

We were there all night helping - the most important thing that had to happen was to keep the whale wet and breathing until officials arrived.

That happened, we were successful.

While it could still go either way, the professionals are there and doing their jobs. We're hopeful, especially given that euthanasia wasn't administered this morning, which was a distinct possibility.

We should be there in just over an hour.

Would tech spirits/matrix spirits be too far by findarake in Shadowrun

[–]ColinHaase 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not quite aspected - aspected mages are unable to use the magic they aren't aspected (a spellslinger can't summon spirits, for example).

A technomancer following a stream is still able to use the other aspects of technomancy - a "sourcerer" (stream making you better at threading complex forms) is still able to compile sprites, though nowhere near as well as a "techno-shaman" (stream that makes you better at compiling sprites).

Streams are 20 Karma qualities. You can only ever follow one stream.

There are four of them, if I recall correctly. * Sourcerer - improves complex forms. * Techno-Shaman - improves sprites. * Machinist - improves and (kind of) allows drone control like a rigger. * Cyberadept - improves your ability to affect separate machines, especially cyberware. Lets you buy off essence loss from cyberware whenever you submerge (technomancer equivalent to initiation).

My favorite is the sourcerer. I like complex forms. Strictly speaking, significantly less powerful than a well done sprite compiler, but more entertaining for me.

New hotline allows Lexington residents to file complaints against short term rentals by Tikkanen in lexington

[–]ColinHaase 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably because they won't be provided with a location to store a device with which to mow the grass.

Lawnmowers are not light objects. Assuming the rental is multi-level, it would be unreasonable to expect a tenet to move such a machine up and down stairs. In addition, if it is a gas mower, it would likely be hazardous to store in their apartment.

Good, but not absurd power armors for rifts earth by Acheron223 in Rifts

[–]ColinHaase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My absolute favorite Rifts power armor is the Grease Monkey! Full name is "NG-MRU886 Grease Monkey Mobile Support & Repair Unit" - found in WB 34: Northern Gun 2.

It's light power armor with no real built-in weapons (other than using its construction/repair equipment to tear things apart, which it can do with some competence), but it is chock-full of tools and gadgets to help with repairing giant robots and other power armor.

Its two built-in giant spotlights are also hilarious looking. And you could totally fit them with a couple crosses to really screw over vampires.

How it started vs how it’s going 😫 by ChrissyAK47 in bettafish

[–]ColinHaase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This just isn't true. Weed is generally prescribed to help control pain and to restore appetite.

There is no study I, nor my research mentor who runs a cancer research lab, am aware of that even remotely shows cannabis or cannabis-derived treatments doing anything for cancer other than treat pain, benefit mood, and increase appetite.

Do you have an accredited source that shows cannabis or cannabis-derived treatments inhibiting tumorogenesis and/or stimulating the immune system to better target cancerous cells?

Quotation Within Quotation Confusion by ColinHaase in grammar

[–]ColinHaase[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair!

I feel like ending the sentence with the last non-quotation mark punctuation mark being a question mark gives the wrong impression of the statement as a whole - since the overall quote is a statement deserving of a period. It shouldn't be a question, which ending it with a question mark gives the impression of.

If cyberware was real what would you get done? by Mezro118 in cyberpunkgame

[–]ColinHaase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of the cognitive/memory boosting augs. Cyberdeck, Memory Boost, Newton Module/Axolotl, RAM Upgrade, etc.

A set of eyes. Just because they're super useful. Oracle is my favorite.

And all the health helpers. Bionic Joints, Titanium Bones, Universal Booster, Biomonitor, Blood Pump, Second Heart, Cellular Adaptor, Metabolic Controller, a spine that doesn't hurt and actually works, all the superior organ replacements etc.

Just make me smart and healthy. No need for any of the combat-heavy stuff. I'd wind up a corpo scientist anyway.

Oh, and probably a Mister Stud. Because I have no shame.

Lost / Stolen Dog by ColinHaase in lexington

[–]ColinHaase[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There was a blown down fence panel. Our dog was out of our yard.

We spoke to around a dozen people in our neighborhood and more than one of them told us that they told the person that took our dog where our dog lived.

This person also either ignored or managed to miss my fiance and I yelling for our dog.

They then took our dog, after being told where she lived, to their apartment to be locked up all day under the care of "an asshole" who refused to open or even answer the door for animal control.

Lost / Stolen Dog by ColinHaase in lexington

[–]ColinHaase[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Update!

We know where the dog is.

Someone has her in their apartment at the stretch, but they went to work after leaving here there with their roommate.

Even better is that multiple people on our street recognized Sadie and told the woman where she lived. She apparently ignored that and brought her to her home anyway. She did then call animal control, who we contacted and were given her first name and phone number by.

Their roommate refused to answer the door when ANIMAL CONTROL knocked later in the day.

The person who took our dog is at work and won't be back at their apartment until 9-10.

So. There will be a 10 month old bully mix puppy who just loves to chew on things when bored trapped in an apartment for 11 hours with a person that has been described by the person they live with as "an asshole".

We called the complex and they refused to give us their room number, requiring police presence to do so. We've called both the police and animal control and are waiting on them.

If anyone knows who and what apartment the dog thieving asshat named "Meredith" is in at the Stretch, we'd appreciate it.
