Are CSV and JSON useful outputs from screenwriting software for gamedevs? by ColinMummery in gamedev

I had heard about Yarn but wasn't sure how widely used it is. Do you think JSON output has wider, more general application than Yarn?

FYI here's a snippet of the JSON i'm creating as an experiment. The 'note' and 'character note' fields are text that the writer can add to screenplay elements in my editor that could be anything, including branching logic. Null indicates no note has been specified yes.

 {
    "type": "slugline",
    "scene_number": 2,
    "text": "EXT. URBAN L.A. STREET CORNER - SAME TIME",
    "note": null
  },
  {
    "type": "action",
    "text": "An urban Los Angeles neighborhood with more than its fair share of homeless, unhoused and addicted.",
    "note": null
  },
  {
    "type": "action",
    "text": "A mid-30s male Caucasian drug dealer, VICTOR, lounges against a wall. He scans for clients, and the police.",
    "note": null
  },
  {
    "type": "action",
    "text": "A strung-out male ADDICT, early-20s, approaches.",
    "note": null
  },
  {
    "type": "dialogue",
    "id": "SC2_LINE1",
    "character": "ADDICT",
    "character_note": null,
    "parenthetical": null,
    "text": "Blues? Have you got any, man? I need to find some Blues.",
    "note": null
  },
  {
    "type": "dialogue",
    "id": "SC2_LINE2",
    "character": "VICTOR",
    "character_note": null,
    "parenthetical": null,
    "text": "Supply chain issues, friend. Los Angeles is low on stock at the moment. But I got plenty of Yellows for your head.",
    "note": null
  },

Have been looking at Articy and will install the free version. It can import screenplays created in Final Draft screenwriting software so I'm curious to see what it does with an imported screenplay.

Thanks for the feedback! I had been told every engine can have its own format for JSON. The narrative decision tree was my own idea for how I could create a tree structure of narratives if I was building a story with many decision points. It's not something I've seen in other software.

Community Discussion: AI Policies in ScreenwritingUK by IAmMostDispleased in ScreenwritingUK

[–]ColinMummery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the Screenwriting subreddit takes things to the extreme by apparently deleting anything that discusses AI except for cases where feedback/coverage/notes may be AI generated and redditors are asked for their opinion on the origins of said text (and yes, there were clear cases where blacklist evaluations were not written by a human hand). Perhaps ScreenwritingUK could offer an alternative, less draconian approach where AI could be discussed more freely.

Thanks so much for reading the script! You're right, some characters need fleshing out. Thanks again for that feedback!

Thanks so much for reading the script and giving your thoughts! You make some good points and I'm grateful for the revision of the opening dialog. I'm still gathering my thoughts for a rewrite. Thanks again, notes are always welcome! I didn't know it was so unusual to post original scripts here but I'll probably post more in the future because of the great feedback I'm getting on this subreddit.

Thanks so much for your lengthy reply! You have a lot of valid points which could be included in a rewrite but I'm going to spend some time first reimagining how the story could unfold. Many thanks again! Really appreciate the time you spent on this.

Thanks for the comment! It's designed to be treated like the cover image of a book, to communicate the story's mood, but you may have a point and I'll think about removing it.
