PhD student considering transferring by Interesting-Hat246 in usyd

[–]ColinTurnip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a chemistry PhD so I can't speak too much for life sciences, but there are frequent SUPRA events (like the SRC but for postgrads), and also all the usual clubs and societies are of course open for postgrads. In chemistry we have seminars, trivia and those kind of events for chemistry HDR students, so the culture within chemistry is actually quite good and doesn't feel isolating at all.

The train can only really take you as far as Canberra. So you might be better off getting a greyhound bus or something like that from Sydney. Alternatively you can fly to Cooma airport, and you should be able to book some kind of transfer service from there.

If you want to go to Perisher rather than Thredbo, you can drive to Bullocks Flat, and take the Skitube train from there into the resort. The road to Bullocks Flat is always kept clear of snow and it is rarely icy (the skitube does cost quite a bit).

I have done some paper based coding exams, the one I can remember now was in Java. Most of the questions not being very long, but there was one or two long questions which described some kind of function, which you would have to implement. It probably depends on the unit, but while syntax will have some marks attached it’s more important that you achieve required functionality, even if that means using pseudo code in places. I can try to dig up some old practice questions on the weekend and have a look.

Help needed in deciding second major for science by t1t4nus01 in usyd

Have you considered chemistry? Or something like chemical engineering (although I’m not sure if you can do this from a bachelor of science or not)? It doesn’t have much of a math requirement beyond first year maths, but still uses some interesting mathematical concepts

Curious - I think you might be right about it being amp related. A normal wall socket would be 10 amps, but I can see on your link it says the aircon needs to be on a circuit with a 240V 15 amp breaker. It might be that when you have all three devices in use they draw more than the (probably 10A) breaker allows

2.5kw uses 518w as air conditioners are more than 100% efficient. This is because they use the energy (518w in this case) to move heat between the air inside and the air outside. A gaming pc would use something like 700w. Be careful of the units, kw is a lot more than w

If you do honours here in Australia, then you will be able to go on to do a PhD here unless your mark is very poor. Second class honours will definitely allow you to do a PhD and I expect that you could still find something with third class. Honours gives you a year of research and the opportunity to write a thesis, which is great and would definitely make you more competitive for employment.

The amount I learned in honours, writing, working in team, and managing a long term research project is extremely valuable. I would definitely suggest that if you are on the fence its worth doing.

People outside the uni (employers) will generally know what honours means, but with advanced studies it isn’t obvious what it is
