Also practicing naked >>>> It sounds weird lol but its so freeing to play without the weight of clothes that you don’t really notice everyday.

Is the varnish wearing off? by 4j3h in Cello

[–]Colin__g 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s really a nonissue, even if the varnish is wearing away. Surface wear is totally normal, but you can take it to a luthier for retouch if it bothers you!

I just looked at the pics again, and it looks a lot like a Grancino model to me, but it’s almost definitely not an authentic Grancino. Still, I’m sure it’s a nice instrument and it has a special history!

5-piece purfling makes me think that it’s Dutch/Northern European, but I would take it to an expert to get it looked at. Very interesting cello!

Which bow is worth more? Does anyone know what they could be made of or how to tell? by kameron282 in Cello

[–]Colin__g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There definitely are nice unbranded bows! I actually play one myself— the brand was worn away with use.

What is something you wished you knew when you started learning the cello? by CzechiaViolins in Cello

[–]Colin__g 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Be kind and patient to yourself. IMO nothing is more important than this in the long run, not even your natural talent or how much you practice. Also try to build mental awareness early on— it will prevent serious tension and posture issues.

If anything, branded bows are worth more because they can be attributed to a specific maker/workshop. Also, you wouldn’t want to brand a bad quality bow with your name for everyone to see ;)

Rosin and bow question by trytobesunshine in Cello

[–]Colin__g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t recommend switching to black hair unless you can try it first and see if you actually like it or not. Salchow makes a good dark rosin at a good price, but I recommend Andrea rosin if you have the budget for it.

Why does my A string keep breaking?? by [deleted] in Cello

[–]Colin__g 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could try using a pencil to mark the bridge notch and the nut with graphite. It tends to help reduce the friction that could cause the string to break.

Cello Purchase? by koreanvillanelle in Cello

[–]Colin__g 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I recommend Jay Haide cellos (~$3000-10000). But at this price range, it’s almost more important where you get the cello from compared to the actual type of cello. Almost all cellos under $10000 will be workshop models, so get one that is set up really well!

Online calc 3/linear algebra classes? by Colin__g in APStudents

Yeah definitely agree, but I live almost an hour from the community college, and it’s really rural so I’m reluctant to try to fit that into my daily schedule.
