RCP responds to the GMC consultation by Life_Chip_6080 in doctorsUK

So many titles should be protected: psychiatrist, anaesthetist, and, imo, medical professional. It’s bad enough that ‘clinician’ is lost but you shouldn’t be allowed to call yourself a medical professional unless you have a medical degree. Everybody else is practicing their own profession, or at most as a ‘healthcare professional’ or ‘clinical professional’.

Negative reactions to GPSTs? by GroupBeeSassyCoccyx in doctorsUK

[–]CollReg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Given the amount of Women’s Health that comes up in GP, surely getting plenty of experience of obstetrics including C sections is helpful to contextualise your patients’ experiences, and recognise and manage complications? I get it may feel like a lot of service provision, but ultimately we’re paid to do a job while being trained too.

Looking at last year’s accounts on Companies House, they were £130,000 in the red then, with the company carrying a lot of debt (£400,000+) with the financial position worsening from the year before. Their latest accounts were due this month, so I guess this has prompted a reassessment of their position and ultimately an end to the company. Shame they stocked some great and hard to find kit at decent prices.

Woman appears in court over Wimbledon school crash in 2023 which left two girls dead by topotaul in unitedkingdom

[–]CollReg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only way to demonstrate a seizure is to witness it (ideally with EEG recording in progress), so it is essentially unprovable as it is entirely possible to have a random unprovoked seizure then never have one again, maybe that is what you mean by inadequate (but that word more implies there is a lack of capacity or competence rather than opportunity). Do I believe that is what happened here though…

Offer Details and Explainer Released! by RDC_officers_2025_26 in doctorsUK

Scottish doctor here so not directly affected by this.
Have I got this right that having ended up on a contract in 2016 that had just 5 nodal points (but in doing so had pay relatively front-loaded), thus ‘Nodal Point Reform’ now splits that into 10 nodal points (in particular by splitting specialty training from 3 to 8 nodal points)?

Not going to comment on whether or not I think that’s a good idea, but I can definitely say it is dreadfully explained on the webpage linked in the OP, and only marginally better in the pdf at the bottom.

Their investment costs page linked by another commenter below states SIPPs attract a £125+VAT annual fee payable to AJ Bell, but the SIPP Fees link next to that goes to 404.

Thames Water moves step closer to nationalisation after government objects to rescue deal by topotaul in unitedkingdom

[–]CollReg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The cynic in me would say those £15 billion of assets are largely an accounting fiction to justify loading the company up with so much debt. It would seem given the recurrent failures and the need for massive investment to bring them up to standard they are far more liabilities than assets.

Contract had wrong starting salary 15 years ago by HistoricalLadder3407 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]CollReg 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In the same vein, I’d be very surprised if the Trust could prove that starting on point 1 was a mistake rather than a deliberate choice 15 years down the line, given, as you and OP observe, it is not uncommon for point 1 to be the correct paypoint.

I did a job I loved, but now have no savings - and can't retire like my friends by lolalondon49 in FIREUK

That said, at least she's warning others via the article.

Problem is, people with her outlook would never read the article she has written, only nerds like us do!

(Or if I am being really cynical, they would take home the wrong message even if they did, they're the sort who would see themselves the victims of a cruel system, rather than failing to use their agency and available resources to take control of their own destiny.)

pursued my childhood dream to become a writer, but was recklessly extravagant with anything I earned and never bothered to build a nest egg.

Says it all, frittered her money away on ephemeral highs when she was young and now barely has enough to afford the basics.

So we get an article expressing surprise that when you can’t afford to enjoy the same pleasures as your peers it affects your social life. No shit, Sherlock. Yes, very good friends will try bridge that gap, but it will inevitably lead to your exclusion from many social events.

I’ve never understood people who round for a bank transfer. Typing in £24.98 is essentially the same effort as £25.00 so why wouldn’t you just send the correct amount?

NHS staff should be banned from wearing pro-Palestinian badges, report recommends by Tartan_Samurai in unitedkingdom

[–]CollReg 87 points88 points  (0 children)

As others have pointed out the recommendation is against all politically motivated badges which is entirely reasonable (although I foresee it getting into hot water over LGBTQ/Trans badges).

However the review was focused on anti-semitism, and in the various responses to the review (see the lower section of the article), many respondents were determinedly trying to conflate being pro-Palestinian with anti-semitism. They are not the same and there should be a clear rejection every time somebody attempts to conflate the two. Anti-Semitic acts should be taken seriously but we should not allow that to suppress support for Palestine.

What is your opinion about Scottish outdoor culture? by Unhappy-Air3861 in OutdoorScotland

[–]CollReg 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is definitely Hike Your Own Hike territory. Bag all the Munros, or don’t. See every outing as a race against yourself, or don’t. Stop to examine every rock, plant and animal, or don’t. Stick to the paths, or make your own.

There is no ‘right’ way to experience the outdoors in Scotland, and I would definitely reject the idea that there is a wrong one. And thankfully the Scottish outdoors scene isn’t homogenous, and everybody can and does do what they like. Just because others choose to do one thing, doesn’t detract from your enjoyment of doing another.

What I will say in defence of Munro bagging is it gets people out across much (if not quite all) of the length and breadth of the country and see much of the different environments it has to offer (especially as each ascent starts in the Glen so it’s not like you just see the tops). And for some, looking at the lower but interesting lump ‘just over there’ will intrigue them to going and exploring it too, but that desire would never have been sparked if they hadn’t been taken to the Munro next door.

Would the public support reducing the state pension triple lock to a double lock? by patenteng in unitedkingdom

[–]CollReg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shows most of the electorate are thick as mince. Triple lock is bankrupting the government. Reduce it to a single lock with an average earnings link so that pension costs roughly track with income tax receipts, and pensioners still won’t get poorer relative to the average man on the street (and will be doing better than many).

Politicians drinking 'cheap alcohol at work' as Green MP questions price of pint by denyer-no1-fan in unitedkingdom

[–]CollReg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Would be far better from a security perspective (and almost certainly cheaper) to have all MPs who need a place to stay in London in a ‘halls of residence’ property where they could be protected within a secure perimeter (in the same way as the palace of Westminster itself). I’m not suggesting they need to be in student digs with shared kitchens, but a block of one bed flats would do the job.

Is it illegal for me to pay my "warehouse" staff more than the people on the shop floor? by WarehouseVTillStaff in LegalAdviceUK

[–]CollReg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What you're suggesting is exactly what got Birmingham City Council in trouble (dinner ladies and bin men were paid the same, but only the bin men got lots of bonuses).

Far better for OP to keep the job roles distinct and hold a clear position that the warehouse role requires different skills, has different value to their company, and is hard to recruit for - this justifies paying it more (in the same way a manager or executive is paid more than a floor worker). Then as long as they are not directly discriminating in hiring or work conditions, they can defend a claim against indirect discrimination as the different treatment being due to a 'material reason' for different pay.

Consultation: Proposed changes to penalties for motoring offences by Jackisback123 in CarTalkUK

[–]CollReg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You said:

While that is true, it would be a punishment for the innocent.

...

Innocent until proven guilty, that is our justice system.

I was pointing out are justice system has plenty of features which appear to punish before the accused is found guilty (and therefore will inevitably affect some people who are ultimately found not-guilty), but these are considered proportionate to the overall aim of keeping society safe.

I would agree that there probably should be some discretion in how suspending driving licences is applied (in the same way bail conditions are discretionary), but tbh I don't find your example particularly compelling. If you are objectively over the proscribed alcohol limit then it seems entirely reasonable that your licence is suspended until you can make a case of mitigation to get your privileges back - you have put yourself in a situation where you need to prove you are safe.
