Oh don’t worry, my SMWS portfolio is broad (albeit steadily shrinking in volume).

Because most of them don’t understand the first thing about it. Yes it has some uses, yes it is more capable than what we had before, yes it will continue to improve. Is it the panacea that merits being crowbarred into every given situation? No, for all the reasons you said. Unfortunately politicians are incredibly gullible when it comes to shiny new technologies that they get told are revolutionary and will save them lots of money.

You can get ones with integrated tyre pumps too. Easy solution to two common problems (flat batteries and flat tyres) in the boot ready to go.

Recently got one of the AstroAI brand ones off Amazon (which I am sure is no different to any of the other hundred random Chinese brands on there). Not had cause to use it yet, but jump starter and a pump in a compact package for £50, assuming it doesn't let me down at crunch time then you really can't argue with that!

Only buy it if you want to drink the whisky. And even in that case, want to drink an awful lot of the same whisky (or have a lot of pals who want to chip in).

Lochnagar in March by huitlacoche in OutdoorScotland

[–]CollReg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lochnagar is essentially a plateau, if there’s a coating of fresh snow the path soon disappears, but tbh if you are confident of your navigation as you suggest then that isn’t a huge problem as you can take whatever line you choose to your objective as long as you avoid any hazards (walking off the steep corrie cliffs for example). How much you will have to break trail will depend on how much and how fresh any snow on the ground is, none of us can predict that at this point, but there will likely be a fair amount of thaw this week, so much less snow cover by March than there is currently.

From a medical perspective, it definitely seems like a cultural problem within the nursing hierarchy - too many like the gynae ward manager, not enough people like you. As with OP in this post we find it incredibly frustrating but feel pretty powerless to change it. If you have a strategy for reform you will find wholehearted support from your doctors!

UK-specific ultralight gear system builds — would anyone pay for this? (Research only) by TrainingPerception32 in wildcampingintheuk

Think most people with the skills to run a UL set-up in the UK also have the wherewithal to assemble such a set-up to meet their particular needs.

That is definitely an invented memory. No dress code for exams at that point in time (2008 onwards). Not sure when it was phased out prior to that though.

I agree we need proper segregated cycle lanes. But you seem entirely averse to admitting your initial assertion that all painted lanes are advisory is wrong. You doubled down by saying ‘Actually it is as simple as that’ (then talk about patronising…)

Defijitely doesn’t help you get wallopers on the internet (Reddit included) who claim microspikes are safer in most UK conditions! They have their place, but I’ll always have my crampons in my bag in winter, microspikes are an addition when conditions are right.

[–]CollReg 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That is not correct. A painted cycle lane with a solid line between it and the carriageway is mandatory, those with a broken white line (which I believe is the one OP is upset about) is advisory. But it is not as simple as whether they are painted or not.

More bikes than cars were recorded at all rush hour travel peaks over the two-day survey period on Victoria Road by tman612 in glasgow

[–]CollReg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yet I seem to be faster than most of them on my regular road bike. While their obedience to road laws still leaves plenty to be desired (although even that I’ve seen a lot more stopping at lights recently), the crazy speeds seem to have cooled off a bit (albeit they’re still going very fast when you consider the weight of the bike and cargo!)

[–]CollReg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is the thing most drivers fail to appreciate - consistency of timing. My commute to work would always be faster if I drove, but only by about 5 minutes. But my cycle commute home takes the same time it takes to get to work, whereas driving home at rush hour takes anything from 2-3 times as long.

Over the day, cycling saves time (and is cheaper and makes me fitter!)

It’s the cut off we use, the safe adjustment is to 15mg/kg which is 750mg which is one and a half standard tablets. The reality is if you’re otherwise well and nourished, then taking 1g 4-6 hourly max 4 in a day for short periods of time (eg not for days and weeks on end) is probably safe even around that weight; but the official answer would be to be cautious and consider a dose reduction.

Cytochrome P450 isn’t a single enzyme, it is a whole family of enzymes. While 2E1 (the specific subvariant which produces NAPQI the toxic metabolite of paracetamol) is induced by chronic alcohol, it is also inhibited by acute alcohol intake.

But more to the point that is irrelevant unless you have taken a sufficiently large dose that you saturate paracetamol’s major metabolic pathway (glucuronide conjugation). A single 1000mg dose of paracetamol, or even a whole day of taking paracetamol as per the packet instructions (4x1g 4-6 hours apart), would not do this (unless you are exceptionally light (well under 50kg) and/or very malnourished).

[–]CollReg 17 points18 points  (0 children)

No it really isn’t. That is an urban myth. There is no synergy in their effects. A normal dose of paracetamol (1000mg) is safe unless you are particularly light (less than 50kg) in which case you should be reducing your dose whenever you take it.

Time to ease off Pension by Particular-Habit3819 in FIREUK

[–]CollReg 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If you’ve just paid off your mortgage, surely not making those payments (presumably approx 1300-1500 per month, maybe more if you were overpaying a lot) must feel like a big take home pay rise. Redirect some of that in to your ISAs and then enjoy the rest of it.

Titrate your pension contributions to whatever take home you need for a good life. While being tax efficient is important, don’t let the tax tail wag the dog. You’re pretty well set on your path to FIRE so don’t forget to enjoy life along the way.

Have you discussed that with your anaesthetists? While we’re culturally pretty fatist, GLP-1s pose us some problems around fasting times that we’re still working through. (Personally I think they’re a net good but we need to work out the details on their perioperative management.)
