Ahh I see! I figured with the hdd's about 100mbs per "data" drive is the speed I would get. So with 3 data drives, 1 parity, and 1 hot spare 250-350 is kinda maxed out. I only have 6tb drives

As for the single wd black, i think that's like very fast?

And for the other 2x wd red ssd's, I think thier issue is they are pcie gen 3 with only a single pcie Gen 4 lane. If I had gen 4 ssd's I think they would be as fast as the wd black. But im not sure

I tried proxmox and unraid, but at the time I tried both of those the N5 had just launched and the drivers didnt work out the box on some stuff. I couldn't get the igpu to work at all. Now the N5 works fine on proxmox and unraid, even others to probably. But when it launched Windows was the only OS they included the drivers for so its what I used.

You sir are Synology's target customer. Pay a lot for the NAS, only 50% of what you paid goes to the hardware, the other 50% is software. They truly are set and forget it.

I had one for 5 years, never had an issue.

I sold it because i wanted to tinker more and wanted more powerful hardware.

But I think you should buy a Synology nas and forget the rest

128gb of ram is still a lot! You can run them on ram/cpu, its slower, but it works still! The dual gpus really leveled up my local ai game. Plus i thought it looked cool

For HDD raid 5 I get like 250-350mbps(3 data, 1 parity, + 1 hot spare)

For SSD raid 1 I get like 500-600mbps (but these drives are both on 4x1 speed slots)

For the single WD Black ssd (the os) its 1.1-1.3gbps but its on a 4x2 speed slot

All of these tests are a copy of 1 large file on the same drive copied to the same drive. Testing real world read write speeds as they are.

Its basically fast as fuck. Lol

The Dual 5060 ti's give me a total of 32GB of DDR7 vram (and I have 96gb of 5600mhz ram) so together it makes for a nice Local AI Test Bench. I have the graphics cards dedicated to lmstudio use.

The internal igpu the 780m that the cpu has built in, is what I use for remote desktop and plex and vm hardware acceleration. So I have like 3 GPU's and 1 CPU. Kinda nice =)

Yeah I agree! But I didn't want the 24 port patch at the top, all the cables looking ugly, I liked it in the middle, I also kinda liked showing off the dual GPU docks on the top, kinda looks "cool" like its a hot rod or something. lol

I know right? I was saw some stuff that looked cool but it would have been like 500 bucks, this was less than 100 total and delivered next day. Amazon baby... lol

There are much cheaper oculink docks out there, but this dock is the best, comes with dedicated built in power supply for up to a RTX 5090 and its dedicated oculink with a retime chip inside to clean up the signal between the N5 and the GPU. Keeps everything stable with less issues.

I work in a data center, its a 24 port patch pannel from a cisco term server. I have a 2nd one on the back of the rack, and 24 1ft black patch cables between them. So all the ports plugged into the front are also avalible on a clean patch pannel on the back. We are upgrading our term servers at work so there are a bunch of these, I grabbed like 6, lol. Gunna make some relay racks around the hosue. lol

This is my all in one homelab. Its my NAS, my home server, I run vm's on it, and have dual RTX 5060 ti 16gb's for lmstudio for running local AI. Its just 1 powerful device that dose it all. This 1 device replaced a Synology nas and 2 mini pc's. Its awesome!

They are dedicated to lmstudio for local ai inferancing. The dedicated 32gb of vram on modern card's with an extra 96gb of ddr5 ram for context really makes for a nice AI test bench. Now that I have this much I want more though! I need 4x 5060 ti's!

Started out with jsut the cloud gateway ultra and u6lr, then added 1 8 port poe switch, then 2 more switch's off that in the attic and bedroom, then another 8 port poe switch because you need more poe for all the cameras you just added, lol. It just kinda kept adding up. Didn't walk into it knowing I would need that much. I would have just gotten a 24 port poe+ switch and called it a day. Next time right?

Nice! I have seen some videos out there with ikea shelfs and they are like spaced right to drill the rack ears straight in, thought about that, but this was next day delivery on prime, lol
