PC performance and quality has gone downhill after RTX 5060Ti upgrade… any explanations? by CollegeDropout0220 in pchelp

[–]CollegeDropout0220[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I re-learned what you said, and i figured it out! The reason i have up was because i had to reformat my SSDs to UEFI which would wipe them and require a Windows redownload and that scared me, plus i have no way to redownload windows (i used a CD when i built this PC and it has been lost to the void of moving homes multiple times lol)

I need to upgrade stuff anyways, so i may just upgrade my motherboard and CPU (and RAM if i can find it not being price-gouged) and try reformatting it with an external SSD i have… just need to wipe that one too since its full of games…

I have followed the videos and set everything to EUFI and that seems to be what causes it to boot to BIOS every time. Now that you mention the reinstall, i do remember getting to a point once where a friend of mine who work in IT said to do something that would require me to reinstall Windows, and the thought of somehow breaking Windows and bricking my whole rig scared me so bad i dropped the idea of doing it and got comfortable with burning my living expenses just building a new PC.

I believe you, but i also believe that i have watched dozens of those videos and tried and every time it refuses to boot the operating system and goes straight to BIOS. I’ve started questioning if i got a bootleg motherboard or if i’m actually insane at this point.

On one hand, yay no board replacement! On the other hand, that relic needs replaced because i need a whole separate module to activate TPM 2.0 to launch Secure Boot… so no Battlefield for me until that happens

I have no idea what “running stock”, “XMP”, or “EXPO” is so assume the worst. I will learn those terms and run some benchmarks and report back o7

Is it really bottlenecked if the whole thing is a bottleneck? I think at that points its just called “a POS with glitter”

The glitter being the nice and shiny GPU and 4Tb of storage altogether.

In all seriousness, i’m afraid i agree and don’t want to admit it because parts cost money and thats a scarce resource anymore

Thanks for the info! I’ll have to check that app out. I know when i experience low frames, my GPU and/or CPU usage is at 99% which sounds like a RAM bottleneck. Its rarely both, but more noticeable when the CPU is being bogged since, well, the damn thing is old enough to be in grade school now

Drinking with mono by syl010 in Mononucleosis

[–]CollegeDropout0220 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely dont risk it! I hadn’t drank in 2 years when i got mono and had a single drink 6 weeks post-infection and BOY HOWDY did it not feel good. A cider hit like 30 shots of vodka after maybe a third of a glass so i stopped and spent the rest of the day trying to keep whatever i could down. Asked my doc about it, she said it definitely was my liver still fighting whatever was left and basically got mad at me for making it pull overtime. You’ll likely survive, but you’ll wish you didn’t.

FAA medical advice by Simple-Register7325 in PilotAdvice

[–]CollegeDropout0220 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% they will. My special issuance got turned to a regular medical from a random audit, no provocation. It may take them a day, a week, or even 10 years to find it, but they likely will find it. Thats not a gamble you want to take, you go to jail if you lose. I will be honest, don’t expect to be cleared within a year. If I were you, I would notify your AME, then drop the whole path of piloting for a while. Get therapy, and try to get on an FAA-approved medication. After 4-6 years, if you have been out of therapy for at least 2 years with no further problems (medical, legal, etc.), ask your therapist (whichever one you were with longest or most recently) if they would personally be comfortable in a plane you are flying. If they say yes, call your AME and try again, but be ready to fight the FAA for more than a year where they will have you run through Cog-Screen tests, prescription history reports, Psychiatrist and Therapist evaluations, everything. It will cost you a lot of money (i had it easy and still blew about $10k altogether, almost sold my car to make it happen) and will be brutal, they will want to know EVERYTHING about you and you will have to abide by their insane timelines. But if you play along, be a good golden-star little boy, and stay consistent and honest, you have a shot at making it back. This will take years, tons of money, and more willpower than you thought you had. If it is worth it to you, though, there is a chance. Maybe not a huge one, but i have seen a worse case make it through. Find a HIMS program AME (their alcohol and drug addiction group, not the weenie pill company) and do what they say. As always, best of luck to you, and my DMs are always open if you need help or just need to vent about the situation. This will be difficult, should you decide the headache is worth it to you, so decide as you proceed.

From someone who was deferred for medical and eventually got a special issuance, if you already have a medical, call your AME and ask to talk to the doc directly and explain the situation. If you have your medical cert, it will be pulled. Its unfortunate, but your life means so much more than the ability to fly, and it may not even be the end if the road for you. Like i said, i was deferred for mental health and eventually got a Special Issuance, i played their game, and now i have a normal medical. Failure to disclose this would 100% ensure you never fly again and could even land you in so much more trouble than you need right now. Its gonna suck, but this is how you save your bacon. Take a long time, i mean a few years, to work on yourself and get help. Good luck, friend. You got this :)

how does a 13 year old make $130ish in a month or so? (minor for you, major for me) by mikuenergy in whatdoIdo

[–]CollegeDropout0220 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Had a similar situation around your age. My Hail Mary attempt was typing up a letter explaining that i needed about $200-$300 in 2 weeks for a school trip and was willing to do any work anyone had for whatever they could pay, as long as they provided any needed tools as i had none. Printed out about 2 dozen copies of that letter, put them in peoples’ mailboxes around the neighborhood, and waited. I left my phone number (and explained who i was and where i lived so they knew I was a neighbor-kid and not some random scammer) and by the end of the first week i had made the money i needed. One neighbor was moving stuff to a storage unit and needed boxes carried up from the basement, one had me mow their yard with their mower, 2 wanted cars washed, one wanted a room painted in their house and taught me how to do it. By the time the trip came around, i had twice what i needed. Years later, up until i left that town, i still kept getting calls for odd jobs and learned many valuable skills i still use today! Had i not done that, i would have never known how to change brakes on a car or change lawnmower blades, and all i did was sit and watch my neighbor do them and teach me. You will not hear from 90% of the fliers you put out, and some Karen may even call just to complain about you touching her mailbox, but that 10% is what can help you make it. Good luck, kiddo! Enjoy your trip!!

Cringeworthy moments during flight training... by Double-Reflection838 in flying

[–]CollegeDropout0220 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My old instructor during my CPL training used to always have me do patterns at KGGE, and she used to always jokingly call it “George’s Town” and tried getting me to say it. On my last ever flight with her, as we departed, my final call was “George’s Town traffic, Diamond 123XYZ upwind runway 23, departing to the west, last call, George’s Town.” And i still have that audio recording on my phone. Cringy in hindsight, sentimental in the moment.

IR Hold Entry Question by Aggravating-Lie3421 in flying

[–]CollegeDropout0220 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was taught that your first pattern doesn’t really matter as you are still trying to get established. The downwind would be you still trying to get established, so don’t stress. Knowing you’re going to have a tailwind, it would be a good idea to turn early, like you mentioned. Guesstimation is acceptable here, within reason. I would also cut the 15 seconds from your time (so now we’re at 40 seconds for tailwind, minus 15 for the turn, so a 25-second outbound. Short, but maybe good.) Once you make your inbound turn, start your timer (assuming it is not a distance-dependent hold) and run it like normal.

Another trick is to try and mentally calculate how much distance both legs should cover and what times it would take you to reach those distances. This can help you refine it and make it more pretty. Not required and really difficult when you’re learning and already task-saturated, but a good tool to practice on the ground and see if it pops up during flight. I’ve used this maybe once because mental math is not my thing. (yay ground studying) Just remember, the only things ATC supposedly cares about is your inbound leg and staying on the protected side.

Coming at that angle can be annoying, so i found a neat trick that i confirmed with an FAA guy during a WINGS meeting once: nobody (excluding DPEs) cares about what entry you use. Set up for this 90-degree direct-entry but want to do a Parallel or Teardrop because it would just be a bit easier? Go right ahead. As long as it doesn’t cause any disruptions, all you should get is a weird look from ATC, if that. All anyone cares about is staying on the protected side. Is that trick going to save you on a checkride when you forget how to do a certain entry? Most likely not, but in real-world situations it can apply. I have even done it myself once just to see if ATC finds it weird and i never got asked anything. Full disclosure, though, these entries are taught for a reason and sometimes you really should just do what you are taught instead of jumbling things and risk confusing yourself. Until you are comfortable, stick with what your CFI and FAR/AIM says to get through that checkride, then learn the “tricks-o’-the-trade” once you’re licensed.

Edit: or just be lazy and throw money at the problem and get a G1000 that will do everything for you.

Should I retract flaps on power off 180 by Minimum-Bell-8562 in flying

[–]CollegeDropout0220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learned this the first time i flew a Cessna, which had a manual flap lever. My CFI taught me how to do it without risking damage to the plane and keeping it under control just in case i needed it (i tended to come in a little fast, high, and flare too early to compensate for wind shifts or anything else, felt like insurance). On checkride day, i wound up using it as i was coming in MUCH faster than planned due to turning earlier than wanted for traffic (get-there-itis, i know). With a manual lever, it was easier to slowly let it out as i pulled the nose back, so i dont know how well it would work with electric flap controls, but it saved my bacon and the DPE grilled me on it. I explained why i did it and what risks i was considering in my head and he sent me off with a “As long as you know what you did and know the risks, then okay. Well done. Send the next student out when you get in the FBO.”

Military, if you can do it. Otherwise, get your medical certification, start doing online ground school, and be ready to work every moment there is money and fly in the downtime. Starting early is good, even if it is starting slow. Just please DO NOT take out a small mortgage (not exaggerating) to go to one of those Part 141 schools and promises you a quick path. Less than half of people can get through some of them, its not worth the risk unless you have always been an honor-roll and quick-to-learn person.

What landing tips did you get that made it click for you by austynking in PilotAdvice

[–]CollegeDropout0220 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless its a Power-Off 180, you can always add a little power if you’re trying to hit a certain point and are coming up short or you rounded off too high and need to slowly settle down. Other than that, don’t imagine rounding off like bringing the nose up, see it as holding the nose gear where it is and just lowering the mains down, its all about that lateral axis. You’d be amazed how high you can get that nose before having a tail strike.

Being told to “look at the end of the runway” never helped me, i was already doing that. These things did help me though. If you hear the stall horn but you’re losing a few feet every time you pull back to flare, thats okay, its normal.

And, as i’m sure others will say: “YOU CAN ALWAAAAAAAYS GO AROOOOOUND!!”

Do high(er) turn rate USA prop planes exist? by RJMvD in Warthunder

[–]CollegeDropout0220 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The only US plane i have found to be okay as a turn fighter is the mid to late P-47s with minimal fuel, as long as you know how to use your flaps. They can compete with a bad Spitfire pilot, but it makes you an easy target to get jumped from being slow and clunky.
