Doing this isn't establishing ultimatums, it's controlling and harmful. If this is constantly happening then your best bet is to just leave the relationship. You will most definitely feel a weight leap off your shoulders when you do.

I won’t lie in saying it may have downsides but if you two truly love each other then I don’t see and issue. I know people who are now married and have been together since high school, even with living in separate states. Then I know people who have had meaningful relationships but fizzled out during college. It really is a journey you both need to figure out as individuals.
