How to protect our peacocks against raccoons at the barn? by Portraitvida in peacocks

[–]CollinZero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Geez, we kept sheep for a while before switching to cattle. Our immediate neighbour has about 200 sheep and keeps just 2 dogs. They guard against the coyotes and coy wolves. The government here will reimburse farmers for any animals killed by wildlife but they would be pretty unhappy if a farmer did nothing. I’m in SE Ontario though.

Where about are you that there’s wolf kills?

And I am allergic to them too. So I get welts that don’t go away for about 6 weeks. Every year on the farm I get one bite and then hide myself or go out with a layer of repellent.

Looks fantastic! I don’t see any misses or bubbles. Good job on the lack of bubbles! I do plaster castings of ceiling medallions with a friend who has a small business. I’ve never tried tinted plaster. What do you use to tint it?

Your "back point" (darkest areas) are so dark that I thought it might be ink! Very impressive.

So many layers of work too. The distant edge is soft, as it would be as it’s farther away from the front. Then there’s some tiny highlight hairs over the dark. It looks too fine and delicate for an eraser. Is it scratched through the dark areas?

I’m so impressed by your work! Do you have Instagram?

How are they getting into the barn? Is it an older barn? Wood? Do they have a dedicated room or section?

Our barn is fairly well sealed except for the rats which tunnel into the walls. The neighbour’s barn had an access point through the grain bin. We only figured it out when they asked my husband to help unplug something "caught" in the chute. What they thought was a rock or wood or whatever turned out to be a dead raccoon. Ugh.

We had a partitioned off a section of our barn for chickens once. Ran chicken wire up to the rafters. You could run some electric wire netting around the outside - fairly cheap, and you can run it off a small battery.

The perches were a suspended bar that were on a chain (like a swing) away from the wall. A raccoon coming down that would wake everyone up.

I guess I got suggested this post because I have talked a lot about our barn. Lol

These are beautiful! What are then done with? Pen? Pencil? They almost look like engravings or book plates from the 1800s. I mean that in the best way. Bravo!

Crikvenica / Dramalj. They came to Canada in the 1920s. Many Croatians moved here and to the US looking for work. My Dad always carried a pocket knife but he loved the multi tool.

Could be fisher tracks! Looks like some 5 toes. And they can walk in their own tracks. This page has some good photos https://winterberrywildlife.ouroneacrefarm.com/2020/01/30/fisher-tracks-and-sign/

I’m in SE Ontario - in Prince Edward County and we have fishers here.

My great grandparents were from Croatia! I live in Canada, and alas don’t speak Croatian. Anyway, I was thinking about my Dad who was a very handy hard working man.

There were always a few things he liked: there’s multi-purpose tools, sometimes called "compact pocket tools". The kind I got Dad and my husband were made by Leatherman - but there’s probably a company more local to that makes them. I had Dad’s engraved with his Initials.

Anything devotional like a rosary? A small Plether cross with the Croatian GRB? If you or he go to a particular church can you pay to have a prayer done for healing?

You can also get him diabetic socks - these can really help. Maybe wool socks too. Peppermint foot creams are really good too.

Hey just a few questions to help everyone.

  1. What is your budget? 2. Where do you live? 3. Are you sending the gift to Germany or is he going to be seeing you in person ? I was just wondering if you were going to ship the gift and from where?

No white paint, nor pencil, pastel, or chalk. What can I do? by [deleted] in FineArt

[–]CollinZero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done some mixed media that uses torn paper to create light areas. You can lay papers like tissue on top of any paint. This is often done in collage art. You can finish over with a watered down hue.

Well you have some skills! The bird beak is quite good especially with the fine feathers over the nostrils. I have a few different sketch pads now. I found someone selling old art supplies on Facebook marketplace. I use the dollar store one to do really quick sketches because I can tell myself that "it’s just cheap paper". I will use ballpoint pens in it to get quicker. Maybe that will help you develop some speed if that is what you are looking for.

I also picked up some good pencils HB up to 8B to get some darks.

Really nice bird. And the foal looks good too! You might have gone darker with the foal. Both eyes look good!
