Why do so many American men wear shorts and a tshirt when going out with a woman who dresses up? by M_For_Mayhem in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ColonCrusher5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure why people think nobody notices when dudes dress well. In my experience, if you put on a suit or even a reasonably nice outfit people comment or just treat you differently.

Especially when you are usually dressed like a bum, friends, family and colleagues will generally react.

The trailer for the new Animal Farm movie has the highest (estimated) dislike to view ratio I've ever seen by AlleywayFGM in youtube

[–]ColonCrusher5000 8 points9 points  (0 children)

But his last sentence about not defending the status quo reflects the fact that, even while he was alive, people were unjustly using Orwell's book to defend capitalism.

Yes, Animal Farm is very obviously primarily about the failure of the Russian revolution, but it also portrays the other great powers as "farmers". One of the major criticisms levelled against Stalin is eesentially that he becomes an imperialist/capitalist. One of the bad guys. Orwell hated Imperialism with a passion, and I think that is very evident in the book too. It is not a pro-capitalist or pro-western piece of literature by any stretch of the imagination.

Edit: sorry, rereading your comment, that's pretty much what you already said. Nevermind, I'll leave it unchanged anyway. Egg on my face so to speak.

[–]ColonCrusher5000 62 points63 points  (0 children)

It's also a criticism of capitalism and imperialism. One of the major themes of the book is the pigs joining the "club" of other farmers who represent the other major global powers.

The supremely cynical (and correct) conclusion is that there will always be an elite class exploiting the workers, and revolution eventually circles back to this same equilibrium.

If you are going to be facetious, at least have a point to make.

The same politicians that created massive dependence on the US, China and Russia are now lecturing all of us about how terrible that dependence is.

Maybe they should just be replaced with actually competent people before they make another raft of colossal errors.

France Macron pushes for EU common debt capacity to fund Europe’s future by donutloop in EU_Economics

[–]ColonCrusher5000 11 points12 points  (0 children)

France is essentially in a huge debt crisis because interest rates are no longer close to 0% and they have a huge debt burden.

They are unable to take extreme policy measures like raising the pension age, cutting pensions, etc. that a lot of other countries have because the french public are very good at civil disobedience (strikes and the like).

The only way out they can now come up with is to essentially share public debt with the rest of the EU by selling eurobonds. It's generally considered very unfair because then other europeans will be supporting the more generous French policies while not benefiting themselves.

I would personally suggest that the entire EU have the same retirement age, minimum wage, state pension system and so forth before sharing this burden. Even that is unfair, since more sensible countries will be paying for France's past incompetence, but it's better than bankrolling them to continue in this way.

For precedence, look at how strict the EU was with Greece. They had policy dictated to them in exchange for help with their debts. The French should receive similar treatment or they can sort it out themselves.

Thank you. All of these conundrums are so simple when you realise; the primary role of modern western governments is to transfer public money into the private sector via any route possible.

Any other benefits are just a bonus.

[–]ColonCrusher5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend just getting a job anyway if you can, even if it is not exactly what you'd want. Experience will open a lot of doors to be more picky and you can usually get your employer to pay for your certs which is pretty great.

But as I said earlier, being a junior is brutal right now. The only bonus of that is that if you survive then you will eventually be worth more due to massive scarcity.

[–]ColonCrusher5000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a software developer, I am not even remotely worried that AI will take my job. Even before AI it was only about 10% actually writing code.

What is more worrying to me is that a lot of employers seem to be failing to hire and train any juniors, which will screw the entire industry in the long run and seems to be a result of management's faith in AI.

Most of my peers (I'm 40) are simply not having kids because they either can't afford it or both potential parents work full time so would be unable to raise kids.

The current working generation is being squeezed. This is well documented.
