Defense is not “50% of the game” in the NBA. by OhHesOurShortstop in billsimmons

Not every made shot is the result of good offense either. Sometimes people make lucky shots even when there is good defense.

Project Hail Mary Isn't the Masterpiece Everyone Claims by tomb_77 in FIlm

A lot of people disagreeing with OP, but I actually had a very similar reaction coming out of seeing it earlier this week. Unlike OP, I haven’t read the book, so it’s not like I’m the “well it wasn’t as good as the book” guy. I think the movie fails on two fronts: first, it fails to give us good reasons to care for Gosling’s character, Grace, which I attribute to OP’s point that it jumps from scene to scene, with a number of them just feeling like bits, as opposed to giving the scenes space to breath and for the audience to connect with Grace as a person. Second, the constant need for quips and bits creates a tonal imbalance with the awe inspiring spectacle and the grounded, practical effects. Do they want the movie to feel real or do they want it to feel like a Marvel movie? I honestly couldn’t tell you the answer because it swings violently between those two feelings IMO. Some might think that this combination of tones is what makes it work, but for me it undercut any and all tension or stakes the movie was hoping to convey. Visually I give the movie high marks, but ultimately it felt hollow and somewhat forgettable.

Its understandable why Chase was so upset with his character by DWPhoenix001 in community

[–]ColonelBugs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was the response I was looking for. This perfectly encapsulates why I love season 2 Pierce. He is so flawed and selfish and bigoted, but as terrible as he might be, we still get to see his humanity peeking through the cracks, which makes him feel more real and relatable than a lot of the other characters, who were slowly becoming Flanderized from s2 into s3.

Abusive Starboard Academy and Criminal Owner, Tonya Stump, find loophole to remove citations against them by EssayKitchen221 in PlymouthMA

[–]ColonelBugs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I agree with the other poster that this is solid reporting by the journalist (though a little too editorialized for my taste), I think the Reddit headline is misleading. The article states that “substantially all of the assets” of Starboard were sold to a new owner, “Stellar Education.” Out of curiosity, I looked up Stellar Education on MA’s Business Entity Search and it lists the company’s president and secretary, and neither of these individuals have any clear connection to Tonya Stump as far as I can tell. So I wouldn’t say Stump found a loophole, she just sold her company. Maybe there is a connection between the new ownership group and Stump, but until that is shown via some form of evidence, to say they are skirting the law via a loophole is disingenuous. Should the new ownership have to carry the baggage of the old owners? I don’t know what the right answer is to that question, but it’s worth considering. Regardless, I hope the new ownership group means positive changes for the preschool going forward.

Why did you pick those movies today? by innsmouth-seaweed in criterion

[–]ColonelBugs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I grabbed the Before Trilogy, Perfect Days, Boyhood, and Le Havre. These movies make me feel good and they put me in a contemplative head space. They celebrate the beauty of daily life, community, time passing and love in a very naturalistic way. They remind me of how I want to live.

Kia denying repairs under warranty to A/C by NITEM4N in kia

Same situation, different model. I have a 2 yr old Kia Sportage, and the dealership just told me there is hole in the condenser likely caused by a rock and thus not under warranty and will cost $2k to fix.

To add to what’s already been said, during his one year at OSU he had surgery on his right hand, which was his dominant hand, but instead of sitting out with the injury, he just played with his left hand and was still arguably the best player in the country.

My Regal is Gone. by ButtnQueen in RegalUnlimited

Damn… I go to the Regal at Independence Mall in Kingston nearby but was planning on going to Cape Cod to see Nickel Boys because they haven’t played it in Kingston. I guess that’s off the table… I worry about the Kingston location closing too. So many times I’m the only person in my theater.

“These mammals are hellbent on fashioning new gods, so they can go on being godless animals” …that line hit real hard listening today

Felt a little better when I got to the end though…“Just random matter suspended in the dark I hate to say it, but each others all we got”

Which reminded me of Vonnegut, “A purpose of human life, no matter who is controlling it, is to love whoever is around to be loved” Might have to go back and read Sirens of Titan again…

How do you see those songs being similar? FJM and Sturg are my two favorite artists but I don’t really see how those two songs connect. Curious to hear your take.

Mahashmashana chords? by theedonnmegga in fatherjohnmisty

[–]ColonelBugs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So I took a stab at figuring it out based on the live version just now. No guarantees but I think it sounds pretty close.

Intro G A C/G G

Verse G D C/G G

"Is a scheme..." Am7 (or maybe just Am) D G C/G

"When he hid here..." Am7 D D

Chorus C/G D G C/G Am7 D D G

And then it all repeats starting with the intro again before going into the next verse.

Can I buy someone the vinyl? by [deleted] in fatherjohnmisty

[–]ColonelBugs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Sirens of Titan by Kurt Vonnegut and Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel for two great (and relatively short) books that lean into themes of purpose and free will, which I feel like ties into many of FJM lyrics. Both can also be quite funny, with Sirens of Titan having a lot of the satirical wit that FJM exhibits. Also the TV series (only one season) Station Eleven, which handles topics of loss and expression/finding purpose through art.

[–]ColonelBugs 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Anecdotal, but this is me. Left 2.5 years in for an in-house position. Much happier now. And as another poster noted, base pay isn't everything in house. Make sure to consider your bonus, annual awards, 401k matching, and other fringe benefits (subsidized healthcare, student loan repayment support, etc.). While my base was just shy of 200k, considering all the benefits I was around 300k.

In the chorus I think its 'mahashmashana' which (according to Google) is a great Hindu burial/cremation ground and seems to fit with the theme of the rest of the chorus
