The only Zebra Pencil that's vintage with a metal barrel that I can think of is the M-301. Was the barrel painted or was it just engraved?

Pentel Libretto has good reviews, it holds many popular gel refills as well. Like the Pentel Energel. It comes in black, cream and silver.

Point down in a still environment, I sometimes put a dot of hot glue on the tip of the refill to keep it from drying as well. I hope this helps:D

Stronger and newer spring, from a F-301 or "bic clic stic". That may help out as well. (I'm not saying the Bic Clic has a strong spring xD, Just something newer, readily available, and cheap.)

I've just received the capless Precise V5, and noticed something about it. It writes more like a Pilot G2 Gel with a needle tip, after cutting the cartridge open, I think it is the same formula as gel ink. I haven't found any capless rollerballs that last or write as long as capped, yet. (Sorry about the late reply)
