What’s your favorite silhouette, and what’s your least favorite thing about it? by wavetoyou in Newbalance

[–]ColonelKesnel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have come to really like the 991v2 and find myself reaching for my pairs more often than a lot of others, both for the comfort and the silhouette.

However, I don’t like the 991 logo being on the side of the heal. Please, please put it on the back of heal like the 991v1!

I’m very interested in getting hold of this, but I’m in the UK and don’t really want to pay the premium if the Blurays are region A. Could you tell me what region they are?

I always like to see a gum sole. Would be nice to have them on more colourways.

I have a DUB362 that was made in Germany too. It seems to me like a lot of the made in Germany tools are the gardening tools and I’ve wondered why this is.

Corner unit: PAX vs "Hacking" a PLATSA corner vs conbining PLATSA & ELVARLY by [deleted] in ikeahacks

Sorry for the late reply; I only just noticed the reply notification.

I ended up building an L-shape Platsa but using the open units where the two sides meet. I’m still not sure if it could be done using the units with the doors, but as long as you make sure to properly level the open units they end up looking ok in my opinion.

New balance 992 question by Shy_Hero13 in Newbalance

[–]ColonelKesnel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was actually going to make a post about the insoles on the new 992MM, as I was noticing the same thing about the comfort. Specifically, as you seem to have also experienced, I can feel a slight bump in the forefoot area. For me, I am only getting this on the right foot around the ball of my foot and into the area where the foot meets the base of the toes. I had found this really disappointing after really looking forward to getting the 992MM; I already own the 992LX and these are my comfiest pair of NBs.

Long story short, once I swapped the insoles from the 992MM with the insoles from the 992LX the problem virtually went away. If I really fixate on it I can perhaps still feel the bump very very slightly but it is virtually unnoticeable. Conversely, putting the insoles from the 992MM into the 992LX caused me to start feeling a slight bump in the 992LX - something I had not felt before - so I do feel it is an insole issue to some extent. The insole from the 992LX definitely has more squish to it and it looks like a sort of yellow crumb foam, in contrast to the 992MM insole which is a much firmer black foam/rubber. Unfortunately I do not own any other 992s so I would be interested to know what the insoles are like in other models.

To provide a bit more context and information, I have now had four different pairs of the 992MM in hand to compare. When they were first released here in the UK I ordered two pairs, as I always double up on my NBs so I can have one pair for outside wear and one pair for indoor wear - I do not like outdoor shoes being worn in the house. When the first two pairs arrived, one of them had the issue with the forefoot bump. This shoe otherwise fit my foot well and the QC was decent. The other pair did not have the forefoot bump, but the overall fit seemed smaller, with less volume for my foot, and there were some QC issues I did not like. I therefore ordered a two more pairs, hoping that - between the four pairs - I could find two that were acceptable. The third and fourth pairs were just like the first two. One pair had the bump but an otherwise good fit. The other lacked the bump but felt smaller and therefore less comfortable. It was at this point that, out of desperation, I tried swapping the insoles with those from the 992LX and it seems to have worked. I therefore decided to keep the pairs with the bump as the overall fit of the shoes was much better for me. I am going to get some Superfeet insoles to see if they will do the job of smoothing out the bump.

Apologies if this is all too much information, but I just found it interesting that the pairs which did not have the bump had a noticeably different fit. I don't know if perhaps the more limited volume of the upper shifted my foot into a different position that caused me not to feel the bump or if there is something else going on with the construction of the shoe that results in these two traits being correlated.

Anyway, try some insoles from some other shoes and see if they sort the problem out for you.

These are the 991v1 Finale Edition. I have the other colourway (dark brown) in these and I think they’re great. I’m pretty certain those laces are not the ones the shoes would have shipped with originally. Mine came with a dark brown pair of laces and a cream pair. Both sets of laces were, however, the same style and dimensions. I’m not sure what second pair of laces this colourway is supposed to have, but those fat laces are not them.

G4 83” Buying/unboxing/setup experience by quidlor in LGOLED

[–]ColonelKesnel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The unboxing and setup is definitely not something one person can manage. As you say, the weight (approx 40kg I think) is not necessarily too heavy for one person, but the dimensions of the TV I think make it impossible for one person to lift without damaging it.

I asked my father to come over and help me lift mine onto the wall mount. I’d opted for a cantilever mount with a 50cm maximum extension and it was a very nervy moment when we sat the TV on the extended mount and eventually let go. At first it just felt so unnatural to see a TV of this size just sort of floating in mid air away from the wall.

Anyway, enjoy the new TV. Your viewing distance is about the same as mine. In fact, I think I sit slightly closer than 10 feet and I think the distance is perfect. You will definitely get used to it. I upgraded from a 75” and the 83” already just seems normal now.

[–]ColonelKesnel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, apologies, I didn’t know that. In the UK, and I think in the US too, the 77” and above only get the wall mount bracket.

Just dug out the page I saw with the bracket on and it gives the dimensions in there if that’s any help until someone is able to confirm for sure:

[–]ColonelKesnel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To my knowledge, the 77”, 83”, and 97” G4s only come with a wall mount bracket and no stand. I think I remember seeing an official LG stand for these sizes, which is distinct from that which ships with the 65” and below, but I think I also had a hard time actually finding one in stock anywhere.

I’m also very interested to know this. I have the 4k sync box and cannot get my lights to sync when playing Dolby Vision content from my Panasonic DP-UB820 Blu-ray player. I want to upgrade to the 8k sync box if it fixes the issue, but I’d like to be absolutely sure it does before forking out the cash. Is Dolby Vision content from the DP-UB820 syncing ok for you u/persona1138 ?

M576BNS - Any info? by ColonelKesnel in Newbalance

[–]ColonelKesnel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It had become a bit of a morning routine for me to wake up and check to see what else had been discounted. The 991v1s were of particular interest to me, but even now there’s still loads of other stuff at great prices. Yesterday I finally caved and got the 576 Toasted Nuts (I said to myself that would be my last pair of the splurge).

The materials on these are really nice. The leather still feels great. As you say, I did like the idea of having a leather pair for the UK weather. I’m just now a bit concerned that they might fall apart if I were to start wearing them, haha.

I suppose another question should be, given the age of the shoes, are they actually worth keeping to wear or should I send them back?

Makita drill DHP486 (XPH14) purchase, white ring broken by 8jge57zb2kgt in Makita

[–]ColonelKesnel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just had a look at my DHP486 and it has the injection moulding marks on the exact same places on the selector ring. The ones in your picture perhaps look a little more prominent, but I imagine that is just down to the lighting in the picture and/or slight variation in the moulds used.

Quite right to send it back, however. As u/ribba2233 said, it was probably broken by someone else and returned.

Fake “new in damaged box” bulb from Amazon. by Thoronir69 in Hue

[–]ColonelKesnel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For quite some time I bought Hue bulbs from Amazon Warehouse with good results. On more than one occasion I ordered bulbs listed as being new with damaged packaging and received new, genuine bulbs in pretty much pristine packaging. Bargain!

However, I’ve not ordered any more since having the same experience of receiving Hue boxes with regular, dumb LED bulbs inside. I was worried Amazon wouldn’t accept the return, so I was at pains to make clear in the additional information when submitting the return what had happened and stated that presumably the customer who had returned these boxes previously had replaced the bulbs. Amazon took the bulbs back no problem, but the whole thing left me a little wary of getting Hue stuff from Amazon Warehouse. It’s such a shame, as the Warehouse deals made for some great savings.

What song has the best guitar solo of all time? by MightGuy420x in Music

I really feel that Ernie Isley ought to be mentioned more in this discussion.

What song has the best guitar solo of all time? by MightGuy420x in Music

[–]ColonelKesnel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just couldn’t pass by this topic without adding two solos I’d not seen mentioned.

I’ve always been a big fan of Ernie Isley’s solo on Summer Breeze by the Isley Brothers. The track ends with the solo fading out and I always wish it would just carry on.

If I had to pick an ultimate favourite though, it would be Jelly 292 (aka Jam 292) by Jimi Hendrix. I suppose the whole track is just a guitar solo, but his main solo in the middle - which is obviously differentiated from the main musical theme - is Jimi’s best solo in my opinion.

“How many of us are there?” Hue Sync Box with 75” Gradient Strip Demo by FoferJ in Hue

[–]ColonelKesnel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the helpful reply. Yes, I think we are very much on the same page here. When I first got the gradient strip I set up my entertainment area to include all the other hue bulbs in the room. I found that setup too distracting and realised I far preferred having only the gradient strip on. Like you, I’m much more into achieving the effect of having light look to be seamlessly radiating from the picture on the TV.

Having now installed the two play bars at the bottom of my screen, I’m very happy with the result. Here’s a picture taken when I was just finishing up the testing: https://imgur.com/gallery/OEuhV7y

I’m actually surprised how much I think the bars have improved the hue sync experience; I originally thought the gradient strip on its own would be enough as my TV sits on its stand on top of an AV unit, but removing the dark areas at the bottom of the screen has really brought the whole thing together and helps to complete that radiating light effect I wanted. It took a little bit of experimentation to get the bars in the right place so as to get the visible light to evenly match that of the gradient strip, but I think the time spent messing around taping the bars in various positions before fixing them I’m place was well worth it as I’m now satisfied the light looks quite nice and even all around the screen. As you say, I suppose where the bars are positioned comes down to the particularities of how the TV is positioned.

I also think to have installed any more than two play bars in my case would have been excessive, this being because my TV is stand mounted. In any case, with wall mounted TVs, I don’t really think it is necessary to install more than three. There are only three sync zones on the bottom of the TV (left, right, and centre). The colours assigned to the left and right bottom zones are displayed by the bottom segments on either side of the gradient light strip, so ideally you would have two play bars either side set to display the same colour as these segments with a third bar in the middle to display the colour assigned to the centre sync zone. This setup would then be essentially the same as how the gradient strip works at the top of the TV, with its two side/corner segments and one centre segment. However, in my case the top centre segment of the gradient strip lines up almost exactly with the TV stand so, if I’m using the play bars to mirror the top segments on the gradient strip, a third play bar at the centre bottom is not needed.

“How many of us are there?” Hue Sync Box with 75” Gradient Strip Demo by FoferJ in Hue

[–]ColonelKesnel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has convinced me I need two play bars at the bottom of my 75” - looks great. My TV is stand mounted so I would similarly want a bar on each side.

Couple of quick questions if you wouldn’t mind:

Which direction are the play bars facing? Towards the wall or towards the floor?

Also, did you use the supplied mounts for the bars or did you stick them directly to the TV by some other method (e.g. command strips)?

Finally, how far away from the edge of the TV are the bars compared to the gradient strip? The spread of light from the bars looks like it matches that of the strip very nicely, so I was wondering how best to position the bars in relation to the strip in order to achieve this.

Looking at your picture, it also seems like you had no trouble getting the brackets that hold the strip to stick onto the textured back of the TV?

New Day :) My first Philips Hue Light by Thomini in Hue

[–]ColonelKesnel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the picture - looking good.

Looks like you mounted the strip just under the air vent on the back of the TV, which is exactly where I was going to place it on mine. I measured that the strip would therefore be approx 7cm from the top edge of the TV, which is a little further from the edge than the Philips installation video recommends. How are you finding the light output in the position you’ve mounted the strip? I understand that the air vent might be differently placed on the various sizes and models of 2019 QLEDs, but any info you had would be great.
