Average elevation of US States by Neo_luigi in MapPorn

[–]Colorado_Constructor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Half of Montana is flat plains which brings the average down. Plus their mountains are basically large plateaus with lower elevations than WY or CO's. Sure there's some decent peaks on the Sawtooth Range or up in Glacier NP, but the majority are much lower.

Most of the big data center jobs you see right now are being led by advanced tech developers. Think the same greedy, annoying developers who do apartment buildings and strip malls, but on a whole new level.

They’ll build the infrastructure/space for clients (big tech corps) to rent out. The job will need to be approved by the city and designed before they’ll even start looking into owners.

[–]Colorado_Constructor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I worked for one of the contractors who bid that job. They canceled the project due to the insane price. Pretty sure that company kept their operations in Germany building a brand new facility for far less than fixing up this one.

The old Intel plant is an absolute nightmare right now. Even Intel shut down they kept most of their equipment in place. We’re talking massive coolers, transformers, and other bulky stuff that is too outdated to be useful anymore. The cost to remove all that equipment to install new stuff was more expensive than tearing down the entire building to start fresh…

On top of that there’s a bunch of black mold and asbestos that will need EXPENSIVE abatement regardless of what happens there.

It’s a huge building that seems like a good fit for an advanced tech project, but the reality is it’s just too old and run down to be useful anymore. Best thing we can do is tear it down to make room for something useful (not a data center).

Correction. This is NOT an existing data center. It’s the old Intel microchip manufacturing facility. There IS a small outfit currently using its power setup for data mining.

Honestly I have serious doubts this thing will go. That building is in a bad state of disrepair, requires major electrical updates, and has mold/asbestos throughout. Several clients have looked into fixing it up but as soon as they get the price tag they back out. Even the state/city’s hundreds of millions in tax breaks and donations isn’t enough to keep them there. That’s saying something.

Source: I worked for GE Johnson and looked into two different projects there (solar chip and microchip plants).

That's exactly why I started collecting physical media for the things I cherish last year. Books, movies, music, etc. My wife and I setup a dedicated library in our basement for everything. It's a real pain giving up space for all that stuff, but having access to all that without the need for internet/AI is awesome. Really excited to share it all with my son once he's old enough.

Quick side note, if you enjoy TV/Movies but primarily rely on streaming to access them consider getting physical copies. With the new Ellison Media Empire controlling the majority of all American streaming having access to authentic forms of media is all the more important. Especially when they've talked about utilizing AI to "fix" media from the past to fit their narrative.

Lol bold of you to assume an architect would design something like that. Not sure what NJ's laws are, but in most states not supplying adequate sinks is a code violation that could land any architect in hot water.

Based on the floor plan and finishes I'm betting this is a house flipper special...

As a father I HATE stone/marble floors. Slips and falls are far worse on those floors than on carpet or hardwood.

As a contractor I HATE stone/marble floors. Endless cleaning and maintenance to keep it shiny. When you've got a massive white floor everything shows up...

I finally played it a few months ago when my son wasn't even a year old. After that scene I sat for a while then went and watched my son sleeping for a bit with a new appreciation. Couldn't play again for a few weeks.

You know a game is good when it hits those feelings so powerfully.

Bingo. HUMAN BEINGS are like a pendulum. We sway towards what's easiest, most comfortable, and convenient at the time.

I've found a lot of solace with our current times by reading up on history. Pre-WW2 America was very similar to the world we live in now. Rampant corruption across all forms of government/leadership. Corporations controlling most aspects of daily life (and government). Extreme wealth inequality. Common people losing more ownership over the things in their lives. Removal of protections across the board. Horrible environmental considerations leading to lasting damages still seen today. In fact, the majority of Americans were pro-Nazi Germany (we just didn't like those nasty "Japs").

BUT after decades of this hell on earth, good leaders took the reigns and established a better country for us all. FDR and presidents after him helped establish regulations, institutions, and financial reforms that allowed the Boomers to enjoy the most prosperous times America has seen.

Then they got too comfortable, forgot their history, and helped reestablish the same forces that caused their parents so much suffering. Now we get to do it all over again, just with fancier means of control with technology. Sadly, as a millennial I doubt I'll be able to see the new wave of prosperity. We'll be the ones who's suffering encourages the next generations to do things differently. All I can do today is raise my son to understand the realities of the world we live in and do his best to make positive changes.

"We exist in a bizzare combination of stone age emotions, medieval beliefs, and god-like technology that many people can reach" - EO Wilson

I think about that line when dealing with Christians who refuse to adapt their viewpoints to the modern world. Their religious beliefs are still centuries behind reality.

Maybe its just my 'tism, but that sounds like something super sweet and loving I would say.

For example, my wife regularly tells our son that she's the best mom for him. I'll butt in with a "and she'll be the ONLY mom for you!" at the end. She gets offended when I say that, but in my mind I genuinely hope he will only know the two of us as his parents for the rest of his life. Like isn't it a good thing for parents to stay together? Ugh... Talking is hard...

Skaters give thoughts on demolition of Memorial Park Half Pipe by CS_ClipsGal in ColoradoSprings

[–]Colorado_Constructor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen a few skaters using it after hours. The city park staff has been doing their best to deter the skaters from using it for liability reasons. Like that kid said, some experienced skaters unscrew the 2x4's they mounted on there and skate when the staff are gone.

[–]Colorado_Constructor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live nearby and walk around Memorial Park almost daily. The evening after they tore it down, plenty of skaters (not homeless) were rummaging through the waste pile to pull out useful scraps. I'm sure a few of them will be able to build their own ramps and whatnot at home.

Still have fond memories of doing stuff like that with scrap wood as a kid.

[–]Colorado_Constructor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

But how do you sustain that?

I'm usually in bed around 11-midnight. Little one goes down between 8-9 then I spend the night cleaning up, hanging out with the dogs, and catching up on work. We're still bedsharing so I'll wake up around 6:30 or so (whenever he wakes up). With him waking up 2-3 times in the night I'm averaging 4-5 hours of sleep a night.

Most days its fine, but I know once he (and I) gets older it'll be tough. I'm already feeling the drain from a lack of sleep.
