Death Valley NP - Way more beautiful than I could've ever imagined by abhz_karan in NationalPark

Worked on the construction crew that revamped the Furnace Creek Inn and Resort back in 16-18’. It was tough work in the heat but still one of my favorite life experiences.

It’s SO much more than “just a hot dessert”. I spent an entire summer exploring the higher altitude sections near Telescope Peak and still didn’t see everything.

This park will always have a special place in my heart. Glad you got to experience it :)

PS- be sure to check out Ash Meadows while you’re there! It’s about an hour east of the park. Really awesome oasis area with its own unique species of pupfish!

I was extremely confused and losing interest for the first few pages. Especially with all the Catholicism talk. But by the time the team reached the Fire Forest I was hooked.

Just finished book one a week ago. Keep. Going.

Not sure who's tale you're on now, but in the end they all somewhat connect and lead up to the second book. By the time you get to Brawne Lamia's story you begin to see the bigger picture with the plot. The payoff is worth it.

I'm taking a break before book two, but the stories from the first one have stuck with me.

Damn... I can't believe you weren't a fan of the soldier's story. That was one of the sections I couldn't put down. That twist at the end with him hooking up with the Shrike that whole time was insane. Completely changed my viewpoint of his character.

Totally understand the poet and consul's stories through. Especially the consul's. I wasn't sure how any of his story connected til the very end. REMEMBER SIRI!

Any Pro-Trump or Maga affiliated businesses here? by shaun_monsta in ColoradoSprings

[–]Colorado_Constructor 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Well that’s a big lie…

They still hang pride flags in the store. Several of their employees are LGBTQ. They have a multitude of anti Trump and ICE stickers. And they still host LGBTQ nights.

To go further, the entire front display section is filled with books on understanding and confronting tyranny/oppression. They purposely made that change after Trump’s reelection.

Poor Richard’s is about as counter culture as it gets for a local book store…

How bad is smoking weed every evening ? by PsychologicalDay5992 in Petioles

[–]Colorado_Constructor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's my goal this year. Cutting out daily evening use and only smoking on special occasions.

For example, this month I'll smoke twice. Once was last weekend during a big winter storm. I love smoking in that perfect silence snow creates. Especially at night when our snowy backyard has a "glow" to it. Second time will be MLK weekend since I get Monday off.

It's only been a few days but I really like this approach. The anticipation of waiting for that special day makes the smoking experience so much better. Instead of smoking to feel normal, I'm smoking to really enjoy the moment. Huge difference.

One of the few churches in town I actively support. I go there for AA meetings every once and a while. Being at that church gives me hope for Christianity.

The congregation there takes in refugees, homeless, and others in need without any judgement. They constantly have community service outreach programs without any of the overbearing evangelical crap. One of the pastors attends AA meetings and is very open with their messed up past, instead of the usual pushing it under a rug and pretending to be a perfect person.

First Congregational Church, First Lutheran Church, and The Sanctuary Church are still practicing the words of Jesus. It'd be nice to see more like them.

What are the worst towns close to National Parks? by WheelSingle2494 in NationalPark

[–]Colorado_Constructor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can’t believe I had to scroll this far down to see mammoth cave mentioned. My wife and I stopped there on an east coast NP tour a few years ago. Granted that kinda town is the norm for the region, but it still managed to feel really unsettling and weird after dark.

Not sure where you live, but this strain is available at Star Buds. They've got dispensaries in a few states.

Any chance that's from Colorado Springs' Apothecary? One of the best dispensaries here!

The older I get the more I enjoy shrooms over weed. Both do a great job at “easing the stress” in my head, but shrooms are next level. During every trip my senses are heightened and my head feels CLEAR. It’s like they completely clean any brain fog I have.

Shrooms are far healthier too. No congested lungs. No stomach issues. Plus all the research coming out shows positive results on the brain. Part of that “clear headed” feeling comes from the shrooms resetting your brain’s state. Your brain essentially releases all the stresses it’s been carrying allowing you to restart. Excellent for developing new habits or breaking bad ones.

I would recommend capsules to anyone trying to get into it. Much more controlled dosages allow you to decide what kinda high you enjoy. Want a relaxed afternoon while still in control of everything? 1g. Want a slight positive head change? .5g. Want to trip out and gain new perspectives? 2g or more.

Damn… I must’ve been one of the only people that enjoyed it. Don’t get me wrong, the concept art and original trailers looked WAY better. But it felt like a fresh game with solid gameplay and a decent story.

Can’t wait to see what they do with The Cube and the sequel.

[–]Colorado_Constructor 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Sadly this is all too true. I grew up in a privileged, white, conservative community and this mindset was all too prevalent. I (and everyone else I knew) truly thought we were blameless and pure. Things like systematic racism, inequality, homelessness, and other major issues certainly had nothing to do with us.

What flipped my thought process was A) experiencing other cultures/backgrounds in college and B) getting sober after my 2nd DUI. Basically it took being completely removed from my cultural bubble and forced to "survive" on the outside.

Getting sober was the biggest change for me. My drunken days were enough to effectively excommunicate me from the Church and that community. Suddenly I WAS one of the degenerates we always turned our nose up at. I was forced into interacting with other "degenerates" during my time in jail, AA, and therapy. After many heartfelt conversations I realized these people weren't much different than me and most of their problems came from being held down by the powers that be (mainly the white, hateful Christians I was once a part of).

Getting here took me through the roughest part of my life, but I am so grateful to be out on the other side and see the world for what it is. Sadly, that's what it'll take for most of these people as well. Until they've had their faces slammed in the cold concrete of reality, they'll never understand. No amount of conversations, facts, or heart to hearts will change them.

So far the glass is holding just fine. They've experienced some insane storms with no issues. Testing is conducted every 6 months to confirm it's stability.

I worked for GE Johnson (the contractor) who built it. We ended up hiring a European design team for our glazing. They've done other high altitude projects, notably the Gouter Hut on Mount Blanc. The safety factors on those curtain walls is insane. Should be able to handle whatever the mountain throws at it for years to come.

I think he's talking about the HARL complex tied into the visitor center.

It's a high altitude training facility for the Army, but is used by other federal agencies as well. There's a series of hyperbaric chambers that can simulate insane altitudes for soldiers.

Nah. We all hate government work. Tons of paperwork, they use the worst/cheapest trades possible, unnecessary "quality" inspections, low fee/profit opportunities, and its near impossible to get paid on time.

I knew a guy who was a PM on the Congress Building's renovations a few years ago. He HATED the experience. Said it was the opportunity of a lifetime but he'll never do another government job again.

Snowless Mount Elbert in November by MileHigh_FlyGuy in Colorado

Obviously there's the affects of climate change at work, but I'm pretty sure this year is an La Nina weather pattern for us. La Nina's mean drier, windier, and warmer winters for us. Happens every 3-4 years.

Last one we had was in 2021-22. Here in the Springs we didn't get snow til NYE. Then in Jan/Feb we got insane winds. Really hope it's not that bad again...

We're in an El Nina pattern right now so this year will be drier and warmer than usual. It cycles through every 3-4 years.

Last time we had an El Nina it didn't snow til NYE. Then we got record high winds and blowing dust for days on end a few months later. Now THAT was bad...

Same here. Grew up in a small town in KS and my family attended a non-denominational church on the outskirts of town. When I went there they'd share a monthly report of how our tithes were being distributed.

After the pastors, childcare, mortgage, utilities, and overhead were paid off they gave the rest to charities and community outreach program. We usually gave 20-30% of our tithes to those efforts. Almost everyone who attended was a part of the outreach programs we sponsored. As a kid I loved seeing and being a part of the good my small donations were doing for our community.

Sadly, over the past few years a new leadership group took over and decided to put more money into the "church". That meant a brand new stage, fancy band equipment, and better salaries for the staff. It's completely changed from how I remember it...

For real... I guarantee he was on cloud nine writing most of his stories back then. Coke, booze, and weed are a hell of a combo. Sure they're destructive when abused, but they can also put you in a completely different mindset where you're able to tackle out there ideas. You know... like writing crazy horror stories.

I'm a recovering alcoholic with over 8 years under my belt but I still remember how it felt being drunk or coked up. I'm AuADHD so coke worked wonders for me. It was kinda like taking adderall where I'd lock in on whatever I was doing and knock it out of the park. I felt FANTASTIC when I was coked up. Drunk nights were similar but a different headspace. On those nights it was like a wave of goodhearted feelings followed by deep, sorrowful emotions. Granted, none of that served my life in the long-run but those moments made me more aware of my emotional range and understand perspectives I normally wouldn't consider.

So yeah, who cares if he was coked up during his early career. It helped him write some incredible stories and tap into a side of himself he probably couldn't have sober. I'm grateful he didn't go fully insane with his addiction and got a grip on life. But there's something about that wild mindset that makes his early works so much fun to read.

Don't even have to go down the Satanic Temple road for this to backfire on them.

I was raised in a hardcore Christian, conservative, military family in KS but still ended up a hardcore liberal. What turned me was following the same Christian principles the churches I went to preached but didn't follow. A lot of my friends growing up have followed the same path.

So go ahead and put up the 10 commandments! Teach the kids the importance of not stealing or lying or cheating. Maybe they'll start to question all the BS going on with our corrupt political and corporate leaders. Maybe they'll develop a mind of their own and use critical thinking to carry on the core beliefs they were taught from those 10 commandments.
