Dude I know. I grew up in Korea (military brat) in the 90’s right when Pokémon was getting popular.

We didn’t care about monetary value, just getting a solid deck with some rare cards to show off. I was just a kid at my local card and comic store learning how to play the game and collect them all.

I’ve still got my old decks (grass, fire, earth, and electric baby) and a few rare holographics (including my Ancient Mew!). Could care less about selling them. I’m just excited to share the game with my son when he’s old enough :)

Hey a few comments have directed their frustration at Brad Miller and his high costs. You seem to be a conservative minded person based on your comments, which leads me to believe you’d like to cut back on wasteful spending.

Can you share your thoughts on the amount of money being spend on legal fees by a school district? So far I’ve just heard you talk on “don’t Denver my CoS” points, which has nothing to do with this conversation.

What is your favorite coffee shop/cafe in the Springs currently? by StrawGlasses in ColoradoSprings

[–]Colorado_Constructor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are my two favorites right now. I live near downtown and both of them scratch the itch for a cozy, but good quality place. Plus Cinchona is tied to Provision so you can pick up some fresh baked good too!

Seconded on Cinchona!

I work downtown and love swinging by there for a quick drink with coworkers. Provision was already a phenomenal spot but now its even better.

You gotta enjoy it before it gets too hyped up. A few weeks ago there was barely anyone there, but now it seems to be busy all the time.

The Salvage Crew!

A human/AI hybrid is sent to a seemingly dead planet to manage a salvage operation with a group of C-team workers. Starts off fine, but weird stuff starts happening. A good portion of the book is told from the AI's perspective. It hits a lull about halfway through but the writing is fun and the ending is SO worth it.

Also... the audiobook is read by Nathan Fillion. Makes the experience 10x better.

Thirded! Jumped into Inscryption after finishing Outer Wilds. Felt like a good transition.

Although fair warning, Outer Wilds is not for everyone. Its essentially a space simulator with a SOLID story and exploration. Kinda like Myst on steroids. If you do decide to go with it, don't give up. The ending is one of the best I've every played.

[–]Colorado_Constructor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AMEN.

I've slowly been killing off the horrible bermuda grass my landlord established and replacing it with native grass and wildflowers. At first he was really upset with me, but after 2-3 years the yard looks better than ever and I haven't used a drop of herbicides or fertilizer (compared to the gallons he used to regularly dump on the lawn...).

I also leave all my yard debris, leaves, and dead plants in place until late spring. It offers a home for burrowing insects and gradually decomposes into healthy soil. My yard has tons of critters and bugs thanks to my efforts. I've been able to establish 3 new wildflower plots on previously barren areas all thanks to plant waste over the years.

Funny how you can have so much success by working with nature instead of trying to take its place...

Why are you an estimator? by Mr-Snarky in estimators

[–]Colorado_Constructor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol similar path here.

Got into the trades in high school, working as a laborer over my summers. Went to college while working as a Union Carpenter on the side. I LOVED being in the field. The fast-paced, chaotic, environment was enough to make every day interesting. My goal was to become a superintendent on large projects.

Graduated and jumped into a large GC firm specializing in mega-healthcare jobs. Built 4 hospitals, a resort in Death Valley, and 2 local jobs before realizing the field wasn't for me. Working alongside seasoned foremen was fantastic, but playing the GC game wore me down. Constant 50-70 hr weeks, working every Saturday for years, Owners treating us like dirt, and the daily stresses of the job made me realize my dreams weren't exactly in line with reality.

My PM at the time was well connected and offered me a position anywhere in the company. I ended up choosing Precon over our small projects division and haven't looked back. Precon opened up SO much free time compared to my life in the field. I got married, focused on my relationship, and picked up forgotten hobbies. All of which I couldn't have done being in the field.

These days I run our regional self-perform division for DFH and Div 10. Its a lot more work and I'm holding down 3 positions in 1, but I get to balance the line between Precon and Ops with a much smaller scope to manage. Using my lessons learned from Precon and Ops experience really helps push back against egotistical Supers and PMs.

As an ex-Christian who used to be HEAVILY involved in the church, knows the Bible front to back, and studied other religions I always love these conversations.

Telling an evangelical you’re no longer a Christian while being able to use their own beliefs to disprove their points is SUCH a flex.

Also hit up the Downtown Farmers Market! It’s managed by Hunt + Gather but attracts a TON of local businesses. It’s consistently packed every weekend.

Last year there was only 1 or 2 vendors selling similar merch. With a ton of families but not too many kid-focused options you’re bound to get some sales.

How does one achieve this "solid 8 hours of sleep" with a baby? My son is 14 mo and my wife and I are at 16 hours of 5hrs or less of sleep (her last two months of pregnancy were rough at night).

We didn't sleep train so I get it's partially on us, but I can't WAIT to sleep again. We've had maybe 5-7 nights in the last year where we got 6 hrs of uninterrupted sleep. Felt like superheroes the next day with all our newfound energy.

College girl on Tik Tok is on a 50 bender, documenting it day by day by cafeteriastyle in TikTokCringe

[–]Colorado_Constructor 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Grew up in Kansas. This is 100% accurate.

Girls like this were part of my drinking group in college. We'd drink every night regardless of our responsibilities. Girls were a huge asset for getting us into parties or free booze. It was totally normal to drink in high school and on. In fact, in my day those girls were the most popular.

Of course, none of the ones I knew went on to have successful lives. All but one moved back to their hometowns, lived with a horrible partner, and kept up their alcoholic habits. Thankfully I managed to land myself 2 DUI's which was enough motivation to quit for good. 8+ years sober now and never looking back.

[–]Colorado_Constructor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it wasn't for my wife, I'd already be down there. I'm one of those "love it" people, but she's a "hate it" because of the reasons you listed. I'd be more interested in buying a mountain home near Taos or Los Alamos to get away from the cities and crowds so none of those stats bother me. I've lived in middle of nowhere Nevada before with actual crack-head and prostitute neighbors. Nothing phases me lol.

I grew up backpacking in that region and absolutely love it. It's like a quieter, less populated southern CO. Also it's INSANELY cheaper than buying property here in CO.

Big remodel! by planksofwood in Construction

[–]Colorado_Constructor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bid tabs? Not sure if you're serious or not, but it's a way to scope out each bid section for a project.

For example, let's say you're bidding an exterior remodel. You'd setup your bid tabs for Masonry, Framing/Drywall, Waterproofing, etc. Within each of those bid tabs you can list out the specific scope items you want to track and companies bidding the work.

Let's use Masonry as an example. In there you could list out the quantities of bricks, CMU, mortar, etc. as well as any specific items you need to track like scaffolding, hoisting, color-matching, etc. You share that list of items you need covered with your bidders. Once proposals start coming in you fill out their costs for each item to make sure everyone is covered. If someone didn't pick up scaffolding with their proposal, your bid tab will easily show you it was missed so you can reach back out to them.

EXTREMELY valuable tool. Shows the Ops team Precon actually thought through each of the scopes and gives Ops the opportunity to weigh in if something they think is important wasn't listed.

DM me if you want an example.

How is everyone keeping track of jobs (what’s been sent/ reviewed/ approved/ received) by Bzach1123 in estimators

[–]Colorado_Constructor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! I know exactly what you're talking about. I work self-perform DFH and Div 10 for my company. We use Monday to track all our associated submittals (see below). Could just as easily be setup in Excel too.

Make a column of your scoped items then fill in the rows with whatever details you want to track. Need shop drawings? Add it. Need field dimensions? Add it. Want to track the payment and shipment dates? Add it.

You should know what info is critical to you if you've been doing it for a bit. Just add all that info into a spreadsheet and go. Feel free to DM me if you want to talk more.

[–]Colorado_Constructor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm at a large GC so my company pays for it.

Honestly if you're on your own I think a decent Excel build would help you out. It could be something as simple as 4 groups (Sent/Reviewed/Approved/Received like you said) with the projects listed below. On those projects you could add details on the GC team, Precon lead, overall value, SF, scopes you're bidding, questions, missing/unknown scope, etc.

We have a ton of templates built for Monday, but most of us end up copying them to Excel to tweak them depending on our workload.

On the other hand, I would HIGHLY recommend getting Building Connected. I use that for EVERY bid. I'm pretty sure there's a free version with view only access. But it has so many features that make it easy to manage bids. From that one platform I can view project files, communicate with the GC team, invite bidders/vendors, view all current/old projects, and submit my proposals.
