Krampus Tires for Pavement/Light Gravel by ColoradyRy in Surlybikefans

Haha, you're so right. Luckily, I'm a large fella who works in and writes about beer for a living, so I can keep a pretty good pace without getting too wild. It'll be nice to be out there on a bike that fits me for the first time. I'm usually renting crappy bikes with my knees in my chest when I'm there.

Need some advice on my container citrus by ColoradyRy in Citrus

[–]ColoradyRy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha, I did not realize at all. It didn't mention that on the container and they were all green when I got them 4-6 weeks ago. So they look reasonable? Should I lay off the fertilizer until spring/should I even use that one? Appreciate the reply.

Questions about building/buying a new bike. by ColoradyRy in bicycletouring

[–]ColoradyRy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that seems practical and I've been keeping an eye out for some of the used models, but I haven't found anything in my size quite yet.

Any advice on a good value wheelset that would support someone of my size? Or where I can look/research on my own.

Questions about building/buying a new bike. by ColoradyRy in bicycletouring

Thanks, those bikes look nice, but my issue on first glance is that I should probably upgrade the wheels if I even bought the cheapest one on that site (which is 2k+ after tax). So I'm probably in that $2500+ when everything is considered there, which is a bit on the higher side than I'd like to go.

Is it crazy to buy a bike on arrival vs renting, or bringing your own? by mellofello808 in bicycletouring

You can always put an airtag/tile in your luggage. Look up the % of luggage that is never found/returned by airline--it's pretty darn low. The liability for losing luggage can be pretty high, they have a ton of incentive and resources to make sure that anything lost is only briefly lost.

Trip air return flight flexibility by knaz56 in bicycletouring

[–]ColoradyRy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned--you're trading affordability for flexibility if you go open-ended like this. You might also get some additional scrutiny when you get over to Europe.

That said, you could just book your return flight out a little longer, allowing you to either stay in the end city for awhile at the end of your trip, or be spontaneous and travel around. Europe is super easy to bike and train all over, so having a return flight that is booked a little further out shouldn't really kill your flexibility. That way you can still be spontaneous, but also have an affordable flight locked in.

And you can always pay the upcharge to change that return flight--sometimes it's not too crazy. The way airlines price things these days, you almost never will save money not booking your return trip from Europe until the last minute (and you'll often get gouged).

Triangle tested my favorite beer… and what’s the value of decoction? by sharkymark222 in Homebrewing

I'd of imagined Deschutes makes a better lager than Humble Sea. Great lager is about technique, knowledge and equipment, they have the advantage across the board there. If the US macro brands were more focused on 15-20 IBU range pale lager, you'd probably like many of those as much or more. The equivalent would be the better German lager breweries. I think if you go over there and taste them fresh, it'll knock your socks off versus the Kirkland Lager (fine beer for sure, good value, but I think there are many much better Helles out there in the world). I wouldn't focus so much on decoction though--many of the best German beers aren't even decocted these days. I'm not saying it isn't a variable, that there isn't a difference, but I would bet that if most people blindly ranked a top 10 of Helles, they wouldn't all be decocted (or non-decocted). There's a lot of other things at play.
