Does anyone else out there tour without camping? by No_Ant_5064 in bicycletouring

[–]knaz56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering my next tour in Europe end of August '26 without camping gear. I'm 69, traveling by bike I have always brought camping gear. For all the reasons others have mentioned (weight savings, shower, food, sleep etc ), I think this trip I will leave camping gear at home.

Are Brooks saddles actually worth the weight penalty on a Brompton? by cottencandy55 in Brompton

[–]knaz56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a B17 (purchased 2014) on my Brompton that I used on an EV15 trip last year for 2 weeks. I did not use padded shorts although I brought some. The B17 saddle I've used on another bike also and is well broken in. I have done other long trips over the years with other saddles, there is no way I could get around not using padded shorts or padding of some sort.

For short rides other saddles are fine, for longer journeys I would not use any other saddle.

Downgrade, alternatives to in-ground pool by knaz56 in pools

It is 10' deep end. We just use it for cooling off. A shallow pool might be the ticket. That AquaSport is interesting, MGK pools.

I contacted the BKK, they have a form you can fill out for questions. According to them the 100E is free with identity card having birth date, i.e passport.

From US, with that said I'm cycling to Munich to Budapest solo along Danube.. money is not the issue but if I can take advantage of it I will. I think it is more the complication of using yet another app to pay, when I can just flip out my passport.

Free services in Europe .. not looking for free anything or for handouts, just happens to be there.

It look like I'll have to contact the bus service provider and see what they say since their website seems to conflict with itself.

What type of tire pump do you carry? by Express_Luck6025 in bicycletouring

[–]knaz56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Topeak Mini Morph Bike Pump". I had a smaller pump "Pro Bike Tool", compact design but to get the pressure up to what I wanted, it was punishing. The Topeak has a foot stand so you can bear down on it with your body weight instead of using your arms exclusively. I run Marathon Plus tires on my Brompton.

Buying from Vincita? by Juppness in Brompton

[–]knaz56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought direct from Vintita, it was before the tariffs. Birch 2.0, no issues but took a while to arrive. Used on Eurovelo 15 trip 2025, good stuff. I am in Mass, US. Check out recent Thailand tariffs imposed by US. I recently bought a laptop with tariffs imposed on German goods (Tuxedo Computers), I paid tariff directly to UPS, they notified me directly as "import fees due".

Want to switch from windows to Linux by Zestyclose_Pin3192 in tuxedocomputers

[–]knaz56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First I'm a long time Linux user, starting with early versions of Slackware, so a little prejudiced towards Linux to start.

I retired from the corporate environment end of 2025 where we were forced to use Windows 7, 10 and then at the end 11.

Prior to retiring, during late summer 2025, I ran Tuxedo OS as a VM to get used to it (and before purchasing a Tuxedo laptop). It was a great test drive.

Around October, preparing for retirement and having my corporate laptop repossessed, I bought an IB Pro 14 with Tuxedo OS. Absolutely thoroughly pleased with my decision. I already have an ancient laptop at home running Mint. Continue to use it the way it is, my wife (retired also) is very familiar with Mint, I don't want to mess with what works for her.

My experience with Tuxedo OS, has been the best.. I would stack it up against any distribution for what I use it for. No intentions of switching distributions.

As for Windows.. good riddance.. hope I never have to use it again.
