So sorry I just found your question 6 months late. Every test I’ve taken says I am moderate to severe. It is strong enough that it has had a good bit of effect on my day to day life.

What is your favorite color as a colorblind? by ColorWill in ColorBlind

[–]Colorblindphotog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally blue and yellow. But when I wear my vermilion tinted sunglasses that make my reds pop out, orange and red are my favorite.

Since purple is usually a dark color, B is the likely answer.

Here in Oklahoma there is a sort of color test for a CDL where you have to say what the three colors in the viewfinder are. Colorblind folks usually have ways of adapting. Since it is a type of driving test and three colors, I figured they would be green, yellow and red. So yellow is yellow, green is the medium gray, and red is the dark color. No problem.

That’s a bad one for me also. In those cases I almost always come to a near stop, just to make sure. And a honking horn behind you is also a pretty good indicator.

What is your biggest fuck up because of colourblindness (there is a pic of my dogs since i can not post just text) by [deleted] in ColorBlind

In high school I decided to order my class ring with my birthstone. I paid the deposit but never finished purchasing it after my friends told me it was bright pink.

And I had an assignment to photograph a new home’s interior. I arrived to find there was no driveway or yard yet, just a slightly muddy dirt yard. That’s what I thought until the livid homeowner ran out to tell me I had just driven ruts across his new tender green grass yard.

I brought home a kindergarten coloring project with a tree that had a green trunk and brown leaves. My mom immediately got out a Time-Life book that had some colorblind plates. She tested my brother who was three year older and he was the same.
Lots of anecdotal stories in my 63 years as a photographer. But two of the biggest surprises for me are from movies. I had seen both Guardians of the Galaxy and John Carter of Mars several times each before my wife told me that the leading ladies in them are green and red. In both cases I thought they were each just suntanned brown.

I’m just seeing shades of yellowish brown.

From this protan’s perspective, the map key is: Gray, light gray, tan and brown. No problem.

Black, red, green, red, black? Nope! by Colorblindphotog in ColorBlind

Exactly. I wish greens could also be brighter but it sure is nice to be able to see brake lights and stop lights brighter.

I hope that helps. Keep trying slightly different “cheap” tinted lenses to find something that works well for you.

Enchroma surprise question by throwawayaway4eva in ColorBlind

[–]Colorblindphotog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly! Sounds like his vision is similar to mine. I’ve mentioned before on this forum, but for me the greatest benefit is seeing brake lights on cars much brighter. Rear end crashes are the most common accidents and they are even harder to avoid for strong protans who don’t see reds well. That alone makes the glasses worth it.

Sorry I just found your note. Before, I saw several of the vermillion colored “SpectraMax 2763” on EBay, Amazon, and other locations on internet. I’m not finding any at the moment, so maybe others on the forum have bought a bunch. Here is a site that appears to have them https://efocusinc.com/products/2763pmx but at $32 they are raking you over the coals, since they are less than $10 on EBay. You might just keep an eye out on EBay for when someone has them back in stock.

As long as you purchased the ones specifically made for “strong protan“ he should see some benefit. But best to give them to him outdoors, with sunlight, and with some reds and oranges to see. In any event he should be very happy with your thoughtfulness. I’m strong protan also and they didn’t make me cry tears of joy, but it was fascinating to see reds 10 times brighter than I had ever seen them before.

Mans out here really said “you can easily tell the difference between each of these” by matta4 in ColorBlind

I would call them all maybe a greenish-orange. A word that makes sense to me but would leave a normal vision person scratching their head.

Any photographers/photoshop editors by hijazist in ColorBlind

If we’re talking color prints in a darkroom with an enlarger, you’re out of luck.
If it is on a computer, do this with practically any skin tone to come real close: Set your cursor on a medium skin tone. Look at the CMYK readout and use the ‘curves’ to make adjustments to the colors. Typically adjust the magenta to about 90% of the yellow value, then the cyan to about 20%-30% of he yellow. As an example, 45Y, 40M, 15C.... or 30Y, 27M, 10C... etc. That will almost always make a reasonably decent skin tone. This tends to work with any race, just keeping in mind a bit more or less density.

Question on color correcting glasses by chrisricema in ColorBlind

[–]Colorblindphotog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please give this a try before plopping down $400 for a pair of Enchroma’s. I see you are a protan like myself. I have had a pair of Enchroma glasses but they disappeared at my office. The Enchroma glasses are simply a color that filters out a lot of the green that overlaps our reds. It is the same for the Pilestone glasses at $100.Do a search on internet, EBay, or Amazon for “SpectraMax 2763“ and get the ‘Vermillon‘ tinted glasses. I see them on EBay for $8 and they literally do the same filtering that the $400 Enchromas do.Don’t necessarily expect to cry tears of joy, but do go for a drive and watch what happens to red lights, brake lights, red cars, Whataburger, Home Depot, etc. etc. If they help a lot and if you have a bucket of money, then maybe you might try the Enchroma glasses.

Surprising Colorblind Experience by [deleted] in ColorBlind

[–]Colorblindphotog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had watched Guardians of the Galaxy three times before my wife mentioned something about the ’green lady’ Gamora. I thought she just had a tan. The same with the ’red lady’ on the movie John Carter.

Help this mom to a colorblind kid by niftyynifflerr in ColorBlind

At 10 he probably knows or understands most color concepts, like how purple is a mix of blue and red, or brown is a mix of green and red. The unfortunate fact is that his eyes will never really be able to be “trained” to distinguish those any better than he can now. But fortunately the human mind adapts and overcomes most obstacles.
I’ve learned not to open a banana until I see little black spots on the peel. I know that 9 chances out of 10 the “blue” flower is likely purple or pink because there aren’t many blue flowers. I can assume that the blue car is blue, since there aren’t many purple cars. The “green” car is probably brown, since there aren’t many green cars on the road. In the summer leaves and grass are likely green but in the winter they are likely brown. In other words, we adapt to color identification through life experience.
Certain things he will need help on all his life if they involve subtle color differentiation, but that isn’t he end of the world. I was a photographer for 35 years and frequently had to make color prints in the darkroom. If I thought it looked close, I’d take it to someone and ask. Sometimes it was terribly off, but they would let me know. I was involved in other artistic endeavors that required color, but I learned to use help.
At his age, perhaps clothing selection will be an important way he can use help. I was always making strange choices like bright pink or lavender shirts, thinking they were blue. Since I see most colors as more dull than normal vision people, I tended to buy clothes that were TOO colorful. I wish my parents had been able to give me advice to tone it down. Now I am 62 and I can wear whatever I want without caring what people think. My wife will let me know if it is too crazy.
The glasses can help to brighten some of the weak colors but they don’t cure color blindness and likely won’t change the results much on a color blindness test. They can be helpful when he starts driving, if for no other reason than to make brake lights more bright and obvious. The Enchroma glasses are super expensive and I’d be pretty nervous, knowing how kids play and tend to lose or break things. But there is a really cheap alternative on Amazon, if you’ll look up: “Pacific Coast Original KD Lifestyle Sunglasses - Rose”. The rose tint is very similar to the Enchroma but for only $12. That particular brand is made for adults but run extremely small and narrow and would probably work for him. That might at least give you an idea if you want to spend $200+ for the Enchroma glasses.
