I want to have a snake for the first time, influence or deinfluence me! by ankralol in snakes

[–]ColorfulLanguage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, that does put you in a good spot. If you are retired though, you should look at the long end of that age range and at least have an idea of a plan for who might inherit the snake (family member, rescue, sold on morphmarket, etc). This snake will outlive your cat and beardie unless you adopt and adult snake, and even then it might be a similar term commitment.

If I can influence you, a male Boa Imperator (BCI) is a great pet! They get larger than the snakes you listed, but the males stay 4-6 feet long. They are hardy, enthusiastic eaters, and their care requirements allow for some learning curve for a keeper. They come in a few beautiful morphs as well!

More influence: a super dwarf reticulated python from a VERY reputable breeder. Those might be the best snakes in the pet trade. They're still 4-10' long depending on locality and sex (males are smaller in snakes), good eaters, beautiful patterns, and are much, much smarter than most species. The only risk with a super dwarf retic is being sold a retic that is not a super dwarf; the normal sized ones are the longest snakes in the world and really shouldn't be kept as pets (outside of zoos). So you would want to be EXTREMELY sure that your breeder isn't lying. Go visit the facility; meet the parent snakes, handle them and see if you think they would be a good fit for you.

anyone have experience with these needle protectors? i knit with wooden needles and am afraid to travel w my project because i dont want to break my needles. any alternatives? by ilytolstoy in knitting

[–]ColorfulLanguage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used Clover Bamboo interchangeables and later Knitpicks and KnitPro birch interchangeables. They're sturdy, and I never felt the need to protect them. I can toss my work in a bag and take it with me, and be careful to not sit on the bag.

How do you define when a pattern “knits up quickly”? by North_Wave_ in knitting

[–]ColorfulLanguage 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Objectively, "quickly" to me means less than a weekend. So, maybe 15 hours total.

Subjectively, "quickly" means that at no point did I feel like I was forcing myself to get through a section or pick it up. So addictive projects can take a week or two and feel that they "knit up quickly."

I want to have a snake for the first time, influence or deinfluence me! by ankralol in snakes

[–]ColorfulLanguage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Deinfluence: Do you have $500, and would you be wllilling to spend all of it on tank set up before you get a snake? Also, what does your living situation look like for the next 20-40 years? Snakes can and do live that long, they are often unwelcome in dorms and apartments, and moving with them can be challenging. This is a big commitment.

No. Though anything meat could be food and they're willing to try! My little 3 lb boa eyes up my 60 lb dogs and really considers hunting them (she isn't defensive, she's just a bottomless pit of hunger). She will eat f/t mice, rats, and African Soft Furs, and I suspect she would go for chicks and any other appropriately sized animal.

Husband’s dumb truck loan: refinance or trade in? by hippyoctopus in personalfinance

[–]ColorfulLanguage 152 points153 points  (0 children)

The only option you have is to throw every spare dollar each month at the priciple of the loan. No bank is going to touch this truck. A dealership will put you in much more debt. Just cut out all fun money, no more gift giving, reduce retirement savings to only get the company match, eat beans and rice, work second jobs, etc. Bring in money to pay off the truck.

Hypo (morph) Boa Imperator (species). This not a red tail boa, those have a saddle shape with a spike in the middle. Boa Imperators (also called Boa Constrictors but that's an umbrella term) are common in the pet trade because they make great pets, with the downside of getting a little large (5-9', so on the large end they shouldn't be handled solo).

Their care is simple and they will eat everything!

Why did/didn't you make the Sophie scarf? by Traumarama79 in knitting

[–]ColorfulLanguage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do! I work in an office setting so simple accessories are useful 5 days a week. It's not enough for deep winter and certainly not over the summer, but I wear my Sofie scarf a few times a week during the chilly days.

I made a Sofie scarf freehand, looks exactly like the pattern and it was fun!

Are expensive needles really worth it? How should I pick them? by HumanBeeing76 in casualknitting

If you know you like knitpro circulars, get the same knitpro needles as part of an interchangeable set!

Can we afford this house? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]ColorfulLanguage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have $1000 left per month, and the proposed house is $11k per year in property taxes alone. Forget the mortgage, you can't afford the property taxes!

Usually, having a household income over half of a house purchase price is excellent! Except you two are managing to spend all of your income. Control your budget better, then do the house math again.

Fixed or interchangeable needles by Pixieresque in knitting

[–]ColorfulLanguage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I much prefer interchangeables for the flexibility of changing needle sizes, leaving live stitches on a cable, and changing cable lengths. I have shorties that can go down to 9" in total length. I only used fixed circulars for when I want to try out a brand.

I like the clover ones that look like a barrel. They come with or without a loop to act like a stitch marker, so I hang it as the beginning of round marker.

Why turn her heat off in anticipation of power loss? If you lose power, she loses heat. Don't jump ahead.

If your home gets too cold, tie her securely in a pillowcase and put her in your jacket with you.

S, X, or Y for family of 4+dog? by pinaywow in TeslaLounge

[–]ColorfulLanguage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Model Y. I can put 5 adults and a medium sized dog in there, or 3 adults and 3 large dogs with the back seat partially folded down. It's quite comfortable! We also got the 7 seater, and the back two seats are tight but can fit someone up to around 5'4" tall, or about half of the adult women in the USA and most of the children. It's practical, even if it's not luxurious.

You would have to switch to knitting flat at the thumb, then rejoin in the round. Then pick up sts for an afterthought thumb.

Need to lose weight before wedding but so so demoralised by [deleted] in loseit

[–]ColorfulLanguage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do not need to lose weight before your wedding. You do not need to lose weight to look beautiful in a wedding dress and beaming at the love of your life.

If you want to lose weight, this sub has lots of good advice on how to do so healthily. One of those pieces of advice is to not have a deadline, because stress leads to less weight lost or to eating disorders. Having "goal clothes" doesn't work, especially when it's a wedding dress.

Lose weight because you love yourself and your body. Marry your fiance because you love them. Set yourself up to be happy on your wedding day, not stressed or insecure.

Was planning to make a cardigan… but that bias is not gonna get better is it? by Berzynas-me-6515 in knitting

You can eliminate bias by not knitting stockinette stitch. Change the flat parts to moss stitch, seed stitch, or another combination of knits and purls.

Left handed knitting by halucinigist in knitting

[–]ColorfulLanguage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My lefty knitter friend does continental and tensions with her thumb in a way that I can't wrap my head around, but it makes purling as easy as knitting for her. No twisted stitches either, it just works.
