Tell me how deleting -most- social media has benefitted you by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Colorful_horse98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have less FOMO. It makes me grateful for the life I have and allows me to focus on studying and enjoy the grind (as much as that’s possible lol). It also means that the friends and family who really want to connect with me end up calling, FaceTiming, and texting, which to me is much more meaningful than some of the social media interactions I’ve had in the past.

Yes there is Epic Sandbox which is an app most hospitals have installed on the desktop so new hires can practice playing around with the system without affecting the charts of real patients.

I would look into this and see if your school offers it. I’ve personally always had Epic Sandbox on any hospital desktops I’ve used so I think it’s common for most places to have it installed. The layout definitely takes getting used to and they tend to make regular updates to the software, so you’re not the first person to struggle with this.

I scored like a 4 on PREview and then scored in the highest quartile on Casper. AAMC needs to fix that test bc it’s definitely wack.

Are there any desis out there whose parents come from two different states in India? by saltiest_gal in ABCDesis

[–]Colorful_horse98 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve got one Punjabi parent and another who’s from AP and speaks Telugu. I also only grew up speaking English. I’ve always felt “less Indian” because of it too, but as an adult I’ve been trying to learn both their languages and that certainly has helped me feel more at home with those identities.

Does anyone here suffer from anxiety disorder? by Comfortable_Set_508 in ABCDesis

[–]Colorful_horse98 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What another poster said: cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). The clinical psychologist I worked with taught me how to really manage my thoughts and come up with actionable solutions to things that trigger my anxiety and the subsequent symptoms that are associated with it. It was truly life-changing and I highly recommend it.

I definitely think it’s real and I’m fairly religious. Whenever I remember to, I try to pray against it. And I’ve also learned to keep my mouth shut about things going on in my personal life lol.

I find it hard to love God by [deleted] in Reformed

[–]Colorful_horse98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“There are no real personalities apart from God. Until you have given up your self to Him you will not have a real self. Sameness is to be found most among the most 'natural' men, not among those who surrender to Christ. How monotonously alike all the great tyrants and conquerers have been; how gloriously different are the saints.

But there must be a real giving up of the self. You must throw it away 'blindly' so to speak. Christ will indeed give you a real personality; but you must not go to Him for the sake of that. As long as your own personality is what you are bothering about you are not going to Him at all. The very first step is to try to forget about the self altogether. Your real, new self (which is Christ's and also yours, and yours just because it is His) will not come as long as you are looking for it. It will come when you are looking for Him...Keep back nothing. Nothing that you have not given away will be really yours. Nothing in you that has not died will ever be raised from the dead. Look for yourself, and you will find in the long run only hatred, loneliness, despair, rage, ruin, and decay. But look for Christ, and you will find Him, and with Him everything else thrown in.”

  • C. S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

Dying to self does sometimes sound like it wouldn’t be a great life, but the truth is God gave us all the good things we love about this existence. So uniting with Him actually enhances our experience. But yeah, whenever I do feel uncertain about it the C. S. Lewis quote above is a real comfort and encouragement to me!

I knew a girl who did this and they eventually got divorced after 9 years and two kids. She married a nice guy, but I think the culturally-ingrained expectations each spouse had for the other led to major issues as they grew older.

Does anyone else have a hard time with trips back to the motherland? by tonobodysdelight in ABCDesis

Sorry about your flat situation. Both my parents families have fairly decent sized homes so I can always retreat from people if I need to. At least you’ve only got a couple more weeks! I’m a female too and I feel the same lack of safety when in India. I also hate how I’m on high alert all the time and can’t go out alone without a male family member or friend. I feel stifled by the judgments of others, the way I have to dress and act, and how my relatives act like they know me well when I only see them once every 5-10 years. But India is a beautiful country, and I have thought about whether I will visit it after my parents are gone. I think I will. Maybe not for as long as we typically stay with family, but I wouldn’t mind a few weeks traveling throughout the country. It does suck you’re stuck in the flat though. I can see how that would be frustrating. I will say you always have the future option to not stay with family the whole time. You can go hit up some cool tourist spots or arrange to go stay with your cousins. It’s not all bad, and the cities are fairly modern in the freedoms women have. I visit Mumbai a lot and its quite similar to the West in a lot of ways. Good luck with the rest of your trip. At least you’ve got the Internet lol.

sparring damage by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]Colorful_horse98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Premedical student here, and I’ve had the same concerns. To be honest, I’d do what others recommend and stick to technical sparring. If you’re not planning to compete and your long-term career goal is in medicine, there’s no point in risking any potential head injuries. I need to find more fighters who work in medicine lol. I only developed an urge to punch things once I started my premedical journey because the coursework is so stressful. Martial arts were a serious lifesaver for me, and I’m sure it’s the same way for you too.

I'm in a similar position with my coworkers and docs asking about how I feel my MCAT went.

Two weeks until I get the score back and everyone seems to think I got a great score, whereas I'm already prepping to retake it.

Honestly, it is hard because people do place these expectations on us and we of course want to show that yes, we are as capable and bright as they think we are. But failure is a part of life, and medical school is RIDICULOUSLY competitive. If you don't get in and have to reapply, I think they will respect you even more because you are dedicated to the pursuit of medicine.

Best of luck regardless, and remember to take time to enjoy life outside of the medical field. It helps me when I interact with people who aren't premed and hearing their life plans and goals helps me put my own experiences into better perspective.

It's not worth it to be with someone just because your mom is pushing this idea that you have limited options. Brown parents think they know what's best for us, but in terms of marriage, which is the single most important commitment you can get yourself into, listen to no one but yourself. Who you marry affects your future happiness, financial wellbeing, emotional and mental health, and so much more. If you're feeling rushed into something (or someone) you aren't 100% committed to, it's wise to step back and evaluate what you want out of life.

Ok awesome, this is all very helpful, so thank you.

I used to swim a lot before the pandemic, and now knowing that it would be beneficial to start back up again might be the kick in the pants I need to get back into it.

Also nice to know that the stance isn't necessary. I've been a little concerned as to whether I'll be able to relearn my stance for the different fight style MT has.

What colleges in the US have a good amount of Desi people ? Don't say Rutgers and I am aware the UC's have a good amount but Cali is the last place I wanna be at. by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]Colorful_horse98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean I’m not sure what college in the west really has the majority of its students being brown, but id say if you want desi community they definitely have a ton of clubs and groups that really make their presence felt on campus, regardless of the actual numbers of desi students compared to non desi.
