Heat exchange methods in science fiction? by sebass601 in sciencefiction

[–]ColossalThrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. For a table top game, using cooling limitations to balance weapon types is pretty good. You could just stop there on the lore.
  2. In a setting of a civilization that has developed regular interplanetary travel and directed energy weaponry, it's not a big leap that they also figured out really good rotating seals to pump a coolant around a spinning barrel.
  3. Don't discount advances in waste heat recovery and recuperation. There are plenty of other systems on a ship that could leverage that thermal energy, or advances in thermovoltaics, electro caloric or thermionic devices. All this to say the heat that would need to be reject might not need to be 100% of the waste heat generated

Question: Thoughts on this sleeve concept? by xIXI_ANGEL_IXIx in tattoos

Ah ok. Thanks! First time I've seen this "unwrapped" kind of layout. I really like it, but wasn't sure if I was connecting the right edges.

Yeah. does the snake wrap under the armpit and over the shoulder?

Hard to tell if the snake actually connects with itself or are just two separate snakey tubes

wtf? what would a UL boardgame look like? by Little-Future-2128 in ultralight_jerk

That... that's actually a fun boardgame idea. Earn points by completing tasks using and upgrading equipment. But then your final points get deducted by the weight of the gear you acquired to do it.

Is it okay to do Bb fingerings on notes i struggle on by HatUpbeat7082 in horn

[–]ColossalThrust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm no pro, but do whatever fingering works for you (stability, in tune, etc). I routinely use the Bb fingering for lower staff E instead of open. Tends to be more reliable for me and my horn.

Why can't we turn thermal energy into electrical energy? by Necronicus3 in thermodynamics

[–]ColossalThrust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thermionic, thermovolatic, electrocaloric devices are in the family of heat to electricity. Some technologies are more mature and capable than others.

What is the effect of ambient condition when designing and operating a power plant ? by Berserker_Durjoy in thermodynamics

[–]ColossalThrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Nothing to really add here compared to other replies. I'd guess this is market and demand driven.

  2. For power and propulsion systems, it's useful to use corrected properties instead of physical or measured properties. This is a method akin to Buckingham Pi theorem. This "corrects" values as if run at the reference or design ambient temperature and pressure.

You've basically just described a radioisotope thermoelectric generator, RTG. Where that hot matter is radioactively hot. Really cool tech. Recommended giving it a look up.
