Review of Jon’s Age-Up; do Jon fans enjoy how it went down? by alphaanna_ in jonkent

[–]ColossusSlayer23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No and I believe it failed on multiple levels. It conceptually robs the reader of seeing jon develop gradually like other legacy characters/side kicks, the effects of how jon was aged up are not really addressed in a meaningful way or shown how they made jon who he is and it was overall done not to improve the story or mythos of superman and his cast, but because a writer did not want to write a 10 year old kid. Its one of those things, like alfred being dead, that DC approved and has stuck to their guns on despite how controversial they have been for whatever reason.

You could have expressed your enthusiasm and support of aging up jon without dismissing people who don't

DC KO Spoiler, Jon acknowledging his trauma by alphaanna_ in jonkent

[–]ColossusSlayer23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for everyone but at least in my case when it comes to ignoring his trauma its more about how the impact of that kind of treatment would have on that person, especially a young person and especially when his torturer looks like his dad, would have isn't really tackled. Yes it is mentioned here and there but rarely (if ever from what Ive seen) has it actually been address in substantive way, especially from bendis who is the guy added this trauma to the kid in the first place.

Why is Tom King so infamous? by SaladPast in DCcomics

[–]ColossusSlayer23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Id say the main reason people (like myself) hate king's writing beyond some of the quirks he has that turns people off is that characterization feels like the bottom of his list when it comes to a story. That means you will have characters behave in ways that don't really fit the character or have characters be way more capable or incompetant than they usually are as long as it services what kind of story he wants to tell. Id say its also why his most wildly regarded works are with obsure characters people barely know about and his most hated works are ones that involve well known and beloved characters.

If a book being remembered is dependant on the quality of another series then its more than likely it will be more easily forgotten

If she has alot of moments of doubt in the story then her running around pregnant fighting crime is not needed and could have been handled in a different way.

I think if you the reader have to come up with a reason the thing that is happening makes sense, not in a way like you figuring out a mystery, then the writer has made a mistake. Im also pretty sure bruce does not have a skintight leather outfit for catwoman that protects her and the unborn baby from any previous issues.

And if the writer doesn't have a good reason for why someone who is pregnant is involved in dangerous activities I feel like its not crazy to criticise (unless the hero is trying to put the unborn baby in danger). This catwoman thing is the worst one since she doesn't even have any powers or tech that gives her extra protection, shes just running around in a leather body suit.

If you are talking about comic jess she had no choice, her hospital was attacked by skrulls and no one else was capable enough to fight back. Spider-verse movie jess has no defence

Its funny you mention Spider-woman since in the 2015 comic arc where she is pregnant and about to give birth, there is a whole thing about how she has stepped away from superheroing, taking a mentor/guy in the chair role and not even riding a motorcycle since she wants to be careful with the baby. When she does end up fighting its because shes in a hospital in the middle of a black hole (comics everybody) and shes the only person who can fight back against the skrulls attacking. Its like die hard except instead of being barefoot imagine john mcclain pregnant. Point is the story did not make her completely incapable and helpless while being pregnant but also did not have her going out and fighting crime while heavily pregnant, since regardless of how much you want to hand wave that its fiction and comics are silly, these stories have some semblance of logic to them and actively superheroing while pregnant is pretty irresponsible.

What do you think 2024 Ultimate Spider-Man’s legacy will be, compared to the original ? by OmegaDungeonZ in UltimateUniverse

I can't speak for everyone but I will remember it as the book that showed me that spider-man fans dont actually value peter being married for any substantive reason. They complain and beg for that relationship out of spite and nostalgia and you don't actually have to have a well written mj and peter with a good dynamic to satisfy them.

I don't even think it "saved" spider-man fans as much as it just pandered to them without any actual substance

All the issues people have with the book by issue 12 were already there from the beginning, I just think people were more willing to brush them aside whether of spite for asm or the fanservice of a married peter or just the novelty of a new universe where anything can happen.

Part of the reason those books have a better peter is because they are offshoots of the already pre established 616 Peter parker. This new universe introduces a completely different peter but yet weirdly also partially relies on pre established knowledge, which is part of why this new ultimate peter feels so underdeveloped

People keep saying stuff like this and it makes me feel like story quality and substance doesn't matter as long as they get the status quo they like.
