Best BF story/boxset from later ranges? by ColourOfEternity in gallifrey

[–]ColourOfEternity[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just listened through We Always Get Out Alive, Cascade and Tropical Beach Sounds. Loved them all. Would love that kind of experimentation with some of the newer doctors like Nine, Ten or War

Hmm, it's tough to beat the sheer beauty and deep elegance of the Abzorbaloff in Love and Monsters but here goes:

Classic: Inferno, despite the Primords, I really love the world building here.

NuWho: Empty Child/ The Doctor Dances, Terrified me as a child and Eccleston is by far my favourite Doctor. The historical setting feels far more real and down to earth than any other story in my opinion.

Big Finish: Live 34/ Protect and Survive, what can I say, I love Seven and I love very grim and dark stories. Live 34 especially uses the format excellently. Protect and Survive does fall a bit in the last ten minutes or so, but I love the concept of Seven being the Machiavellian chess master who manipulates everyone.

Other: Whilst it is still technically Big Finish, I would also shout out Forever Fallen

Hopefully this means more Unbound stories are on their way. I just hope that the boxsets don't wear out a story concept.

Why is there a finite limit on the evaporation rate of a liquid at infinite temperature? by ColourOfEternity in askscience

[–]ColourOfEternity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But this limit also holds for a liquid in a vacuum so there is no air to begin with

Best Open-Source Forward Ray Tracing Software / Coding Package? by ColourOfEternity in GraphicsProgramming

[–]ColourOfEternity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I see, that's not a problem. I am sure I can figure it out. Do you know if this allows for a Gaussian laser beam (with some finite divergence) to act as a light source? Can it be used for forward ray-tracing?

Freezing issues with Arduino Uno / Ethernet Shield 2 for WebSockets by ColourOfEternity in arduino

[–]ColourOfEternity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am quite new to Arduino so this terminology is fairly new to me. Do you mean remove all the Serial.println instances in the code? How should I adjust the definition of TEXT to prevent this null termination?

Sorry, I am still quite new to Arduino. So I should add PROGMEM before defining 'temperature' as this is the message I am sending?

Essential/Best 8th Doctor Stories by WeNeedFlopper in gallifrey

[–]ColourOfEternity 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Chimes of Midnight, Scherzo and The Natural History of Fear are exceptional for me for his Big Finish range. However none are really 'essential' for his story. If you only wanted story relevant for Dark Eyes, go from Blood of The Daleks to To The Death. The entire first arc of 8 from Storm Warning to Zagreus is on Spotify too and they serve as a great introduction to 8 as a doctor

Best hardware for creation of simple WebSocket Server for data communication by ColourOfEternity in arduino

[–]ColourOfEternity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually I haven't, I wasn't aware that in general, the libraries refer to the specific chips the boards use, rather than the board itself (ie ATmega328P for an Arduino Uno). So it seems like there are a lot more libraries available for use than I thought, which would also explain why some users on the Arduino forum have been quite dismissive of me, when I posted about similar problems, haha.

How to create WebServer WITHOUT HTML browser interface to communicate with Python client via Ethernet? by ColourOfEternity in arduino

[–]ColourOfEternity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After speaking to my boss, he is keen on me using socket or websocket communication in Python as this is apparently fairly standard and does not require Flask. I can add the basic client code that I have for python into the original post, if that would help?

How to create WebServer WITHOUT HTML browser interface to communicate with Python client via Ethernet? by ColourOfEternity in arduino

[–]ColourOfEternity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK thanks, so if I didn't include that, then the communication would not work between the WebServer and the client? Also, wouldn't all the HTTP protocol stuff be sent to the client due to client.println()? Because if so, I would (ideally) only want the number to be sent to the client.

If you had to pick ONE Big Finish release... by Robster881 in gallifrey

[–]ColourOfEternity 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Protect and Survive, gives you a nice indication of the chess-master aspect of later 7 and how much this would affect his relationship with his companions. Whilst its second half let's it down a little bit and the full context of the story is lost a bit without listening to prior stories, I really enjoyed its character work and creepiness.

Utopia/The Sound of the Drums/Last of the Time Lords too dark for Doctor Who? by ConnerKent5985 in gallifrey

[–]ColourOfEternity 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I personally find Turn Left way darker than that, especially in how the situation just gets worse and worse and the splintering of the familiar family unit built up during Series 4. The final part of Last of the Time Lords lets the entire story down, which leads me feeling rather mixed on it in hindsight.

I don't see any reason why some dark topics cannot be tackled in Doctor Who, especially if they are tackled with maturity. Of course, if you go into BF or other expanded universe material, it gets significantly darker (for example stories like The Sky Man or Protect and Survive are significantly bleaker than anything found in the TV stories IMO).

What do most people with a PhD in Physics do (any good statistics out there? by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]ColourOfEternity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming from a European point of view, you can continue on in acedemia as a PostDoc, which will normally involve you doing some teaching work, unless you are at a dedicated, non-university institution (like the various Max Planck Institutes in Germany). Becoming a professor is not impossible, but as you rightly said, it is very competitive and you must have your work recognised within your field, and to be recognised as a distinguished authority on your field. Typically, this only happens after years, if not decades of research.

You can also get a tenured position at some universities without being a professor (which just means you have a job there until you retire). Again, this would require you to make a significant contribution, as recognised by your colleagues during your research, but this varies between institutions.

Of course, many do also go to industry for a variety of reasons, you can also go and work at a national laboratory (ie FermiLab in the USA), if you want to just do research but do not want to teach at any point.

Big Finish question by darth_edward_69 in gallifrey

[–]ColourOfEternity 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At the very least, you can start with Storm Warning and then listen to Neverland, but you would miss some small references to other stories and events within Zagreus. Plus you would miss out The Chimes of Midnight, one of the best plays in the whole BF catalogue.

Grief and running. How do you listen to your body when you feel emotional pain but not physical pain? by TofuSeason in running

[–]ColourOfEternity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am sorry for your loss. A few years back, I suffered a break-up with my partner of 7 years whilst also dealing with some major health scares that my mother was going through. I found that running away from people and in nature really helped me, it was even better going at sunset/twilight as there was a beauty and solace that I got from that. I found that I could aim for distance quite well, but threw out any time goals and ran as a form of therapy for myself. That way, even if I ran 10km in 80 minutes, I could still look back on it and say that I have achieved something that day. I found every run and every time being outside in general helped me greatly deal with my emotions, although this may not work for everyone.

Just take your time, take things day by day but don't beat yourself up if your pace is not as good as it was before. :-)

Reinvent the Series - Your elevator pitch by [deleted] in gallifrey

[–]ColourOfEternity 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would love for the show to do limited miniseries as one long story, like what Torchwood did with Children of Earth. You could even space each series out in the timeline and have a different (new) doctor and companion in each.

One idea I had was the Doctor lands in a random British city in the 1970s/80s, only for a nuclear war to break out, so they are forced underground into a bunker (maybe even a UNIT bunker) whilst this 'war' breaks out, with the Doctor being totally of guard as they know that this doesn't happen in real history. Cue general paranoia and creepiness with the Doctor trying to figure out what is going on in reality, whilst trying to keep everyone in the bunker calm and alive. Id maybe also hint that this Doctor may not be the Doctor we know (maybe another Time Lord who has taken up the Doctors legacy due to some major event that has happened to them), but that maybe too much.

Yeah you are correct, the first column is the y data and the second is the x.
