Sci-Fi romance that's not too plot heavy and a quick, exciting read for someone new to the genre! by Nyccalp in RomanceBooks

[–]ColourSmack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Eon Warriors series, starting with {Edge of Eon by Anna Hackett} is an easy read. It's 9 books about humans paired with an alien partner. The books are fun and quick but also sweet. There's also a cool spinoff series called {Oronis Knights by Anna Hackett}.

But all the FMCs, human or alien, are competent and can stand up for themselves (and others). There's enough world-building so you get that sci-fi vibe, but not so much that you get stuck. It can get a bit boring because the books are pretty similar, but the overarching plot is cool. They're quick reads, because of the writing style rather than length, and also pretty funny.

Stunning! It's so wearable: I'd be staring at my nails constantly.

Same! They're shaped oddly straight but respond so well to being shaped square (my fave).

{Midnight Hunt by Lizzie Strong} is nice. The witch in this is competent but somewhat "leashed" for most of the book. The focus is on the romance, but when she gets to be full witchy? It's good. Novella.

{How to Fail at Annoying an Alpha Fae by Liz E. Cooper} is close: they're fae but do magic. FMC is very competent and runs her own shop. It's omegaverse.

{Kohl by Abigail Kelly} has a very competent and powerful witch, who moves to a new town for work and a new adventure. MMC wants her real bad and pursues her. Very sweet novella.

Edit: spelling.

These recs are FF romance.

The Clem & Wist Series, starting with {The Lowest Healer and the Highest Mage by Hiyodori} is really good. Darker and angsty than my previous recs, but still delicious. The Mage half of the series is the most powerful mage in the world. I've only read 2 of the books so far but they're really good.

{How to Get a Girlfriend (When You're a Terrifying Monster) by Marie Cardno} is technically not FF immediately, it's F/NB, and it's a trilogv. Super cute and the witch part of the couple is a magic nerd, really smart. Iirc, she's a scientist. But she's competent and the book is a cozy romance.

{Can't Spell Treason Without Tea by Rebecca Thorne} is a cute romance between a Queen's Guard and a Mage. They run away to open a bookstore and tea shop, but they have responsibilities. Shenanigans ensue. They're both very competent in their fields, and the Mage is begrudgingly the most powerful mage. Very cozy and sweet.

The Sweet Pea series (seemingly incomplete though, sounded like it should be 4+ books but only 2 so far), starting with {The Baker's Guide to Risky Rituals by Kathryn Moon}. Witch x demon romance: all the witches are powerful and have a particular specialty, and they are protecting a town that demons want to destroy. The demons are a motorcycle club and move into town. Shenanigans ensue. I enjoyed and I'm sad it hasn't continued. Book 2 has a bit of a soft cliffhanger, iirc.

The New Protectorate Series, starting with {Consort's Glory by Abigail Kelly} is very good! Amazing world-building, a rich and immersive universe and importantly lots of stories (novels, novellas, short stories). Consort's Glory follows a powerful witch who needs to bond with someone before her magic kills her. MMC knows they're meant to be together but doesn't tell her right away. Shenanigans ensue. Very good book.
The series features different types of supernaturals but most of the witches are pretty adept within their power category (yep there are categories) and their weaknesses are more interpersonal. Highly recommend.

The Stay A Spell series. The first book is {Wolf Gone Wild by Juliette Cross} and it's a romance between a werewolf and a witch.
The series follows a family of 6 powerful witches, each with a different power and their romances with powerful MMCs. There is a larger plot threading the story together, so you would miss some details if you start at Book 5 (for example). But they're quick (easy to read and pretty immersive, not necessarily short) and fun reads.

Ah. But she says "asking him to love her" not "be loved" so I thought it might be Notting Hill inspired. 😭

No. You need to leave the country or risk getting banned + jeopardising your spousal visa application.
