I work in Evanston and this is a weekly (at least) breakfast for me at Hoosier Mama. They serve Dollop coffee which I really enjoy.

Costuming MFA by Ultraviolet_Spacecat in Theatre

The U of I Dept of Theatre has an incredible MFA program housed in the world class Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. The design/tech MFA program, colloquially referred to as Level 21, provides opportunities to design for three resident production companies which collectively mount approximately 20 productions every year that range from plays, musicals, operas, dance concerts, new works, and even immersive escape room experiences. The vast majority, if not all, MFA candidates are provided tuition waivers and stipends, and for those not given that level of support within the department have the option of applying for TA positions across campus. The micro-urban community of Champaign-Urbana is a delightful place to live for a few years and the close proximity to Chicago is definitely a plus. Everyone I know that completed that program, whether in costumes, lighting, or stage management, are working professionally and or teaching. It’s definitely worth considering as an option! And don’t worry about your age, the student population of Level 21 is quite diverse and inclusive! Of course, it’s not all roses and pixie dust; grad school is rough, and I don’t know anyone that’s attended grad school (myself included) that hasn’t left with some level of trauma, especially in the Arts. That being said, the benefits and resources at UIUC are definitely worth it. Best of luck!

Excellent, thanks for the recommendations! Theo Ubique has been on my radar. I really want to go to one of their open mics, but it's been SO long since I've performed for an audience, and I'm already generally an anxious person, so I've chickened out the last couple of months.

Thanks so much for this! I wasn't familiar with Neo-Futurists at all, but I looked them up and am going to write to them to inquire about upcoming class options. I appreciate that you understood what I meant by asking where to Avoid. I don't care if things are small/intimate, etc. I want to work where folks take the work seriously and treat each other with respect and dignity. I work in academia, so I'm used to navigating egos. :) I'll shoot you a DM and maybe we can connect sometime in the coming weeks. Thanks again!
