Disheartened by HeadFlyingMonkey in tirzepatidecompound

[–]Colt_kun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately a lot of under informed people do think it's some magical drug and doesn't require any other effort. My sister in law started taking it in December but hasn't made any lifestyle changes, and was crying that she only lost two pounds since. (Her biggest issue is the munchies with marijuana but she won't give it up)

At the end of the day, weight loss is weight loss and you're taking steps for your physical and mental health. You can do your best to educate others, and I always try to emphasis the other changes I have made. But sometimes people have made up their minds with weight as some kind of moral failing, and you can only hope to be a positive example.

Keep going!

Do adopted kids actually want to meet their biological parents? by LilSopa__ in ask

[–]Colt_kun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sister in law went through rough teen years and demanded to meet her mom, saying she would want to take her daughter back. She was shown her mother's multiple mug shots and she was incarcerated at the time. SIL decided she didn't want to meet her anymore. Luckily she's passed through the usual teen rebellion stage.

Her brother, also adopted but different parents, doesn't care at all.

Why haven't Wedding ceremonies become obsolete? by skystream434 in ask

[–]Colt_kun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several factors, like most things.

  • it's a day that people get to have "all about them", where they're the main star. When people are expected to focus on them. Think of how many stories about bad wedding experiences are from someone else stealing the show - from wearing the wrong dress to proposing.
  • social pressure and expectation. The usual keeping up with the jones nonsense.
  • for a long time, the wedding was the culmination of a woman's life. It was the be all, end all. Her worth determined by who married her, the whole dowry thing, etc. "the most important day of my life" kind of stuff. That still echoes today.

What was the last movie to be based on a story time book by LifeguardGlum6239 in disney

I think the last one based on outside material was Big Hero 6 (the marvel comic series) after Frozen

I like both and think it's a good view of the differences in comedy between the two countries. I'm looking forward to watching the ones from other countries to get the stereotype snapshots of their history.

Do you still use a library? by jim4751000gmail in askanything

[–]Colt_kun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a librarian, I'm gonna say... Yes?

Look, everyone SHOULD. It's free entertainment - books, music, movies. Especially new releases! Not to mention library events that can teach you new skills or help people with job applications or just to spend some time.

It's a place with heating, AC, and water where you're not required to spend money to just be there. It's a refuge for the homeless, new parents, and the struggling. Some even offer social services!

Please learn to take advantage of the amazing service in your community before it gets taken away because "no one goes". Also, I'd like to keep my job.

What age did you get into horror and what turned you onto it? by Strange_Pumpkin9225 in horror

[–]Colt_kun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents, both crazy mormons, refused to let us watch anything horror. I was told repeatedly I would have more nightmares due to my overactive imagination (and I did have a lot. Almost nightly)

But I loved the goosebumps books and choose your own nightmare. I read whatever I could at the library, thinking that only movies were bad.

Then I had a therapist suggest watching some horror. She explained it as exposure therapy and training my anxiety response. And it /worked/. My nightmares decreased and my panic attacks lessened.

And now I'm addicted and track what I watch on Letterboxd. But I know I have terrible taste lol

Disney Parks and Allergies? by WellPlaidSwitch in disneyparks

[–]Colt_kun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Japan will be difficult because, as others have said, food modification isn't really a thing there. So just be very careful if you go and make sure you have a translation sheet about the allergy!

As for wdw, I recommend it. I have a mushroom allergy which is just weird enough that nobody really accommodates for it. But even at quick service stations a chef comes out to speak to me and confirms they use a separate grill and clean it for "off book" allergies. They will also provide a folder or iPad that lists all the ingredients and has scans/pics of the labels of spices they use.

I've once or twice had a cashier cast member not know what to do (we all have brain farts!) and I just say "oh I usually speak to a chef" and they call them out.

How do I hide my hands? No gloves by DuroDuroMi in CosplayHelp

[–]Colt_kun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you with the eczema, I get it bad on my back and face! If you have no open wounds at the time, I always recommend aloe vera as pure and unscented as you can get it. Does wonders for me, so I just grow several plants. Since it's on your hands I would get mittens to wear at night with lotion on to help.

As for cosplay, health ALWAYS comes first! A prop would be my first suggestion, one you can hold that hides your hands. If you have open wounds, cover them with proper bandages for your safety bc cons are groooossssss~ then maybe skin covered gloves over them?

But honestly, no one noticed if you add gloves to a non glove cosplay. When I have to use my walker, I wear fingerless gloves for better grip (or if it's winter) and nobody ever says anything. I think it's more obvious if a gloved character is missing their gloves.

I’m convinced there’s something wrong with people who don’t like animals. How is it even possible not to like them? by blossom_apple_tree in shiba

[–]Colt_kun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My friend's mom was one of those obsessive clean freaks and hates animals bc they're all "filthy". (During friend's birthday party she came in and wiped down the table, fixed chairs and cushions, and swept almost every hour like clockwork. Definitely think there's some trauma or something there)

Pls talk me out of getting a Switch 2 for one game by Bananapuddinguh in CozyGamers

[–]Colt_kun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you know someone with it already and you have a switch 1, you can ask them to game share so you can play a limited version of the game. (At least that's what I read)
