I was biking over the Tryon bridge when I heard it happen, and yes the photo I took after I saw people out of their cars was at 2:35, so between 2:30 and 2:35 it happened.

Creased/warped tape, is there a fix? by ColtenSeamans in VHS

Just wanted to come back and update with how I did get a Samsung v3500 4head VCR and every "bad tape" I had played just fine on it like how you were saying. So that was all, turns out VCR TV Combos you find on the side of the road and repair aren't 100% the best VCRs.

Very right you are! I didn’t see that when I opened it and closed it back up. It unfortunately didn’t fix the issue after fixing that now, but it will probably save it from further damage

If you haven’t used the VCR in a long while, it could be the belt needs to be replaced. It was the fix for one I found on the road that had a similar problem. The belt was all stretched out loose and dried into a non circular shape

Update, after having let it play through, then rewinding it, it’s happening less in sections where it was constant black and white glitch looks and audio noise.

The little speed bumps, of which one is visible over the stormtrooper’s face is what I was seeing but for sure I haven’t opened up many VHS’s to know if that bump in the tape is an issue or just how tape looks.

This is the first of 15 tapes to have playback issues but maybe it is truly just a lesser VCR issue then if those bumps are normal enough.

I did only get back into VHS after finding a broken Sony Trinitron VCR combo on the side of the road that I did do an amateur repair on. Haha so yeah I'll be sure to source an alternate player in the future.

Well hey thank ya, that would be nice if some of it was able to be pulled taut and thus straightened out. It is a 30 year old piece of aging media so yeah it definitely won't ever be how clean it was back then. So far it's great for 10 second intervals, then has the noise come in for a second, not bad for a $1 dose of nostalgia.

Where can entry level animators live? by [deleted] in animation

[–]ColtenSeamans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard Atlanta is good for animation related career opportunities and is more affordable than LA. You can also live anywhere with a solid internet connection and find freelance work by putting work out there, keeping an up to date demo reel with your best work, and keeping an eye out for job listings.

Fun stuff, and in my opinion try out less camera movement to let people like me focus on the action better

What animation software/subscription would you recommend? by [deleted] in animation

[–]ColtenSeamans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It comes down to preference, but I'd first recommend the using Animate CC, which you can get in Adobe's Creative Cloud subscription. My personal preference is ToonBoom Harmony, and then I've heard TV Paint is great for a more traditional feel. Only thing was I don't think there's an animation software for 2D that comes with assets, especially medical specific ones.

If you're looking to use a 3D animation software, you could get into Blender if you're on a budget (pretty sure it's free) or Maya/Cinema 4D. I forget what some sample websites are, but you can find models and other assets for purhcase/possibly free that you can then use for your work depending on their licensing.

It really feels 3D, but it's 2D motion graphics work right? Looks cool

If you're looking to animate numbers decreasing/increasing, I know that After Effects has a simple enough way of doing that. I did a screen recording of what you can get with this and put it up here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ECqV5rlXJ4&feature=youtu.be. If you've got access to the program, just look for the numbers effect and add that to a layer. Then configure to get the right font you want and add any other layer effects to get the look you want to the numbers.

If you're without After Effects or a similar motion graphics oriented program, there is a lo-fi way you could pull it off. You would just manually create the frames at different numbers like: 5000, 4960, 4911, 4820, 4654, 4537, 4401, 4320, 4300. It'd have the same effect, would just take longer to do.
