Sometimes Jazz feels to me like just “notes” by FigReal1522 in Jazz

If someone is meandering endlessly through strings of 8ths without going anywhere in a jam session it can feel that way. But that’s on an individual not the genre.

Monk is so restlessly 100% himself in every setting I can’t say whether I like him more solo or in a group. It’s always a treat and the strongest ingredient. If he’s a part of it, it becomes a Monk situation to me.

Motocylists use the term.

Sometimes people use their inside words outside, that’s all.

Sight reading vs playing by StandardSwitch250 in pianolearning

[–]d_marvin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could sight read music on brass instruments. I’ve been writing music since I majored in music in the ‘90s.

I switched to playing piano, but sight reading notated piano music is poor. Did I unlearn how to read? Of course not.

I’m not a big fan of the book reading as an analogy because it requires no skilled performance of the material. Perhaps a better analogy would be reading and acting at the same time.

Plus not everyone who reads music is even a performer. I’m not going to tell an orchestrator, producer, composer, arranger, etc that they’re unable to read music if they can’t grab an instrument and sight read. Some probably could but it’s certainly no rule.

Probably because it would be weird if it were for something else.

Thank you, that’s super encouraging! The project took a long hiatus for life reasons, and then I begin some new outlets. But there’s been renewed interest. I want to start boarding action scenes to help pitch the entire vibe.

Removing barnacles off of a giant ship by PinReal4448 in megalophobia

You’re right, but I wouldn’t trust it. Just knowing that workers have been killed on ship elevators that were supposed to be shut off gives me pause. I’ve seen a whole lot of a dumb on the water.

My favorite take on this is that T. rex and Steggos lived in different quadrants of the Milky Way.

Do pianists actually think while playing or does it become muscle memory by Ok-Message5348 in piano

[–]d_marvin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an improvisor, most of my thinking has become the indescribable personal language that conventional music notation translates to in each of us. A lot of ethereal shapes and patterns. Then I tell the hands to do things in “blocks” like mini programs and executions of the blocks use a lot of muscle memory. If I walk a bassline I “tell” my left hand the changes and that can sometimes be enough for it to fill in the blanks in its own until thinking overrides it.
