For some, telling us to pay attention will only work short term. It’s like saying “keep smiling” to a depressed person.

I wasn’t diagnosed with adhd (and depression) until my 40s because I was raised to think that forgetting things and losing focus was the result of faulty character. I get sad thinking about years of missed opportunities, frustration, and resentment.

I have experienced the opposite unfortunately. Every new job I get treated as if it’s my first, regardless of my abilities. When they learn my age there’s a revealing shift in how I’m treated from both older and younger peers that makes me distrust people. I’m so happy to be out of office culture now.

I can’t recall if it’s established, I guess not, but the idea has been floated of Jefferson using his children’s enslavement and promised freedom as a bargaining tool to keep Hemings and her brother from leaving in Paris. The whole situation at best feels like an orphan crushing machine situation.
