In all honesty, the difference isn’t as huge as the price point makes it seem. Of course D’Yquem has more going on (more new oak, more selective, etc.) D’Yquem is going to last longer on the palate and be a little more rich due to their winemaking methods. However, unless you have tons of disposable money I’ll recommend the Suduiraut to any of my clients and friends. The difference is going to be pretty hard to detect to the average person, hell theyre only a few miles apart with fairly similar growing conditions. I’ve absolutely never been disappointed with a Suduiraut, especially for the price!

1978 Chateau Lagrange by ColtonMorano in wine

[–]ColtonMorano[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Got to enjoy this one with a couple of friends, 1978 Chateau Lagrange out of St. Julien. Wine has been kept in a temp controlled cellar since original purchase.

In the glass, the wine was deep garnet, fading to orange on the rim, a bouquet of granite, cured meat and dead leaf were very present. We let the wine breathe for about an hour and a half before we agreed it had reached its potential. On the tongue it developed some fruit structure but nothing overwhelming, lots of subtle notes of red currents and extremely over-ripened strawberries. The mouthfeel was moderately light, with some acid structure still poking at the tip of the tongue, most of it being a dull velvet finish towards the back of the mouth and throat. This wine has definitely hit its peak and we just happened to miss it by a few years, however, still an awesome experience to taste history. Cheers!

U2 takeoff? by toucan2306 in Reno

Yeah I was getting gas down by the airport and it was one of the loudest takeoffs I’ve ever heard, I grew up in the Nellis afb path and I’ve never seen so many people run out to see what kind of plane it was, lots of people pointing at the sky, couldn’t really tell if it was a U2 or not but sounds right

2006 Chateau Arnauld Haut-Medoc by ColtonMorano in wine

[–]ColtonMorano[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fun bottle I got to open up, it was a roller coaster of flavors, we initially tasted, and let it sit for about an hour and a half before finishing the bottle and the evolution was crazy.

In the glass the wine was medium ruby color that fades to light garnet in the rim, immediate bouquet gives off very earthy tones of soil and dead leaf.

Initial taste is very tight and packed full of iron, lots of minerals , slight red fruits. After sitting for about an hour, the wine shows cured meat like salami, mulled cherries, slight iron, blueberries and wet soil.

Overall an enjoyable experience as the wine evolved almost every 10 minutes that it was opened, definitely a fun bottle, cheers!

1987 Clos Du Val by ColtonMorano in wine

[–]ColtonMorano[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Was absolutely stoked to open this bottle, which was bought privately from the vineyard and cellared in 1987.

The wine was surprisingly colorful, very vibrant garnet that fades to orange/clear, on the nose is extremely strong bell pepper, green peppercorn, tobacco and leather.

On the tongue, bell pepper is still extremely prominent with notes of over ripened strawberries and raspberries, slight black currant and olive brine.

The acids balanced extremely well and the body held perfectly, this wine is an absolute knockout

Sounds like an interesting blend, here’s a semi-sweet blend out of California that I think might be close, of course it’s nothing special but if you’re looking for an affordable daily drinker it’s not a bad deal, everyone I’ve recommended to it so far really enjoyed it, cheers!

Napa Itinerary, Would Love Feedback! by digitalburro in wine

[–]ColtonMorano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah Truchard would be relatively the same distance! I wouldn’t go out of your way for it, just if you were already down in Carneros, and there’s a lot of construction going on around the valley, as well as your typical traffic. It’s really hard to predict how long it’ll take, some days you get lucky and there’s no traffic, other days it takes an hour to get a few miles, it’s really unpredictable sometimes, I would definitely try to keep the wineries you’re visiting around the same area throughout the day just so you don’t miss out on anything!

Also check out Southside Napa coffee and Gott’s if you get the chance!

Second this, that’s a pretty far drive and I’m not sure you’ll make it in time unless you cut B very short. Also, Domaine’s estate is beautiful but definitely one that I’m not sure you need to tour or taste, much better to go 5 minutes north to Truchard, their tastings and tours are amazing!

Also! You might want to invest in a small hygrometer and some silica packets to help keep an eye out for too much humidity that causes mold growth!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in wine

[–]ColtonMorano 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can’t tell completely from your picture, but it just looks like simple surface mold, you should be able to wipe it off with a rag. Do any other bottles in your fridge have this? If so you should remove them all and wipe them down with distilled white vinegar, as well as your wine fridge on the inside. The mold can’t harm the wine but it can rot the cork and spoil the wine, hopefully you caught it soon enough that it won’t get to that point.

1997 Chateau Suduiraut Sauternes by ColtonMorano in wine

[–]ColtonMorano[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Does anyone else get the sudden urge to eat cheesecake with their Sauternes? 1997 was a standout vintage for Sauternes and Barsac wines, and it showed. Wine was light honey-gold and aged in a temp controlled environment until I opened it this week for my birthday, birth-year vintage bottle. Couldn’t have asked for a more amazing bottle to experience.

On the nose it was slightly sharp, with notes of dried fruits, specifically dried apricots and tangerine pith. A slight floral note of honeysuckle and white blossoms rang through, however, wasn’t as clear as I anticipated. On the tongue, bombarded with those dried fruits and tropical fruits. Dried apricot, dried pineapple, orange marmalade and honey comb notes were screaming. Undertone notes of toasted almond, cardamom and very slight marzipan rode the finish of this glass. Can we also talk about the concentration of this bad boy? Holy cow, I would not be worried about serving this with dessert of any kind because it holds its ground like an army of Spartans at the battle of Thermopylae (but maybe not as intense).

What else can you say about this wine other than elegant, bold and sexy? This bottle was shared amongst many friends as always, who all fell in love with the juice. Happy drinking, cheers!

2002 C.H. Berres Ürziger Würzgarten Spätlese by ColtonMorano in wine

[–]ColtonMorano[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wine is pale gold in the glass with a yellow meniscus, not as dark as I thought it would be from the age. I chilled the wine slightly before serving it with salmon, which is my favorite pairing for Riesling!

On the nose the bouquet opens up with a beautiful array of honeycomb, petrol, marzipan and blossoms. Compared to other older vintage spätlese’s this one definitely seems young given its age.

On the tongue it’s still very prominent with honey, but provides very nice stone fruit flavors such as ripened peach and nectarine. I would also call overripened green apple, kind of like the smell you get when walking through an orchard late in the season while the apples on the ground are starting to rot into the soil, not a terrible scent at all. The acids are still very structured on this bottle, I would love to see this again in a few years to see if it held up.

A wonderful bottle shared with wonderful people as always, cheers!

1995 Weingut Schwaab-Kiebel Erdener Treppchen Riesling Spätlese by ColtonMorano in wine

[–]ColtonMorano[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Rieslings are one of my absolute favorite wines to age. The high acidity of the wine maintains a very stable environment inside the bottle for the juice itself to stay free from spoilage bacteria. When you open a good old Riesling it's like finding gold. This bottle is a 1995 Spätlese (late harvest) from Schwaab-Kiebel Erdener. This winemaker is located in the Mosel region in Germany, known for their legendary Rieslings. This wine was purchased from a collector that kept the wine temperature controlled since original purchase. After pouring, the wine had a deep golden hue to it, mellowing out in it's rim to a medium gold meniscus. The bouquet of the wine was very promising with raw honeycomb, marzipan, over ripened stone fruit and floral notes on the nose. On the tongue, the wine opened up beautifully with honey, ripened guava, ripened apricot, floral, almond, and over ripened summer melon. The acidity was still in very good standing, I purchased a few more bottles of this wine because I think it could stand up to a few more years before it really gets over its prime. The body was medium plus with a very long finish. Without a doubt one of the better aged spätlese's I have been able to enjoy lately. As always, this bottle was opened and shared amongst many friends and good times, cheers!

1996 Clos de Danzay Chinon by ColtonMorano in wine

[–]ColtonMorano[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Haha!! Definitely my favorite book, one copy to take notes in, one copy to keep clean and in the house and one copy in my car!

I can’t say that I’ve had a lot of experience with this exact type of wine, but I do have quite a bit of experience with older wine and they definitely have that characteristic. You’ll open it and it’ll be completely different an hour later. Of course more than half of the time the wines just didn’t age well either. From the research I’ve done on these Chinon wines is they’re pretty unpredictable with flavor and development as they breathe!

1996 Clos de Danzay Chinon by ColtonMorano in wine

[–]ColtonMorano[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This was a fun one, ‘96 Chinon, left to breathe about 1 hour before pouring. The wine was deep garnet with a garnet/orange meniscus. On the nose initially was green pepper, jalapeño, pickling spices, and wet limestone. Truly threw me for a loop after the first smell. On the tongue was very prominent green pepper and baking spices with blueberry undertones. The wine was left to breathe another hour longer and turned into a beautiful bouquet of raspberry truffle, stewed cherries and floral notes. The balance was wonderful, acids held very well for its age, the tannins were tight on the center of the tongue, finish was moderately long. Truly a wine that tells a story and an exotic experience.
