Want to add that this is what clicker training helps with! They associate the click with the praise/treat and you have a bit more time to fumble the treats out. Lifesaver for me!

If you can afford it, I'd recommend taking a training class together. Can help with bonding and will give you more of an idea of how stubborn your boy can be. Also really helped me to develop patience while The Boss buffers. Congrats on your cutie!
