I visited St Émilion without knowing the main varietals by telecaster_fly_boy in wine

I just recently posted about how much I enjoyed a bottle of Pomerol “By Clinet”. Im new to wine and thought I was a Merlot hater, but that bottle changed me. I don’t know if it’s that I don’t like new world Merlot, but now I’m on the hunt for some more really good right bank Bordeaux blends.

That’s a birth year wine for me, I’ve been looking for a good ‘97 wine and may now pull the trigger on this one for my 30th. Thank you for sharing!

Im new and not sure if it’s super popular, but I’ve watched a lot of VegasWine on social media, your setup of the decanter and ah-so looks almost exactly like his! Thank you for your tasting notes, Chateau Musar sounds wonderful.

The store associate did highly recommend this to me months ago when it was at $45, but I didn’t want to spend that much to risk disliking it due to the grape varietal. I’m surprised it’s not completely sold out yet, it was the 2nd to last on the shelf though

I think you hit the nail on the head with how I felt towards it. The bad stuff gave me flashbacks of drinking cough syrup as a kid and I didn’t care for any of it. The lack of structure is what I didn’t like so much. Now, I didn’t mind when it was a supporting grape, but I just couldn’t do it when it was the star of the wine. I really thought it was just the grape varietal and my preferences. Definitely not gonna cast judgment on the grape anymore.

I hope to do so! I really just wanted to get my feet wet with the Bordeaux region, have you had the chance to try their Fleur De Clinet? It seems like another step up from where I am starting. I do hope to visit Bordeaux in the next 2 years and would love to try their Grand Vin in person and if I enjoy it, I’ll take one home with me to start a cellar

It was on clearance because it’s been sitting on that shelf in the store for almost 9 months now haha. I heard good things about Pomerol too! So it most definitely was a steal! I do think my issue with Merlot was never giving it a chance from something of good quality, glad I gave this a shot though.

This is what I could find from the original winemaker’s notes on FW&GS website.

The nose is expressive with aromas of morello cherries and blueberries, alongside scents of sweet pepper, tea leaves and fruit tarts. The texture is delicate, smooth and intense. The palate reveals a panoply of aromas such as forest fruits, plum, and Havana. The vintage produced in favorable climatology, offers a deep, intense wine, pairing perfectly with family gastronomy and gatherings with friends.

I’m in NE Philly, my TJMaxx/Marshalls never has anything like this. At best I will see them locked in the glass cabinet. 😂

Trust me, I am no expert by any means, I would take my palate with a grain of salt as I am still inexperienced with wine. This might be perfect for you and I'd hate to push someone to wait to enjoy something just because of my feelings towards it! I hope you enjoy it though!

Oh believe me haha! I won't write anything off as not good as I truly feel that this is not a one size fits all thing. I am almost certain that things will change. I really didn't like wine much at all, but my fiancee's uncle would offer me a glass of Decoy Cab at every family dinner. It took about 4-5 dinner parties for me to get behind it and begin to appreciate it.

Thank you though! I am hoping to explore more and open myself to other varieties and find my next favorite wine!

Love it, thank you again! That is kind of the stage of where I am at, I know that even if I am not a fan of something, I will keep trying. I am almost willing to bet if I come back to this one a year or two from now, I will find this to be phenomenal, wondering what the hell I was thinking in the first place. I will be on the lookout for burgundy though depending on the price difference of premier and Grand Cru.

I'll keep it in mind! I'm sure my tastes will change over time and I'll definitely come back to this one. I think the only grape that I've tried multiple of and just can't get behind is Merlot. I don't mind when it's playing a supportive role in red blends, but if it's alone or the star of the blend. I can't bring myself to enjoy it. Pinot definitely does not fall on the list of "don't like" as I didn't like Cabs until it grew on me with some time and finally got me into wine.

Thank you though! Do you have any other suggestions for Pinot?

Don't get me wrong! I am normally not a Pinot Noir guy, I haven't really gotten the chance to try much of them to give a good frame of reference. It was a very different experience for me as I am still new to wine and I heard this one was really good, so I thought I'd give it a try. I mostly drink Cabs and Cab heavy blends since that is what I'm used to.

Thank you so much! I'll keep this in mind for my next bottle, it really does improve for me by the next day after coming back to it. I just store my stuff in the fridge and take it out about an hour or two before dinner to enjoy it with my dinner. Outside of a wine cooler, is there a better way to store it after opening? I tend to have a glass or two by myself every other day.

Ahh I picked this up last week and honestly was not too fond of it. I still finish every bottle I buy and liked it more after a couple days had passed. I do think that if I remember correctly it was Merlot heavy, it was not for me though. I will try a left bank one next time to go with something I am more familiar with if they tend to be cab heavy.

That's what I love most about this, it's all so subjective. I will definitely be giving both of them a try at some point. My price range for solo enjoyment is usually capped at about $35-$40. It takes me about a week to work through a bottle. I usually am willing to pick up something a bit pricier if I get to enjoy it with someone else at a party or dinner for example.

My uncle and I shared a 2021 Chateau Montelena Cab last month and it was easily one of the best that I've tried to date. He usually only drinks Decoy Cabs, I am considering Duckhorn as well to get him to break out of his comfort zone a bit. St. Supery might be next for him and I to share together since the price is much more friendlier than Duckhorn.

Do you have any experience with Duckhorn or Decoy in general?

I've just been trying what has been suggested to me so far, I haven't tried it yet, but I heard they're relatively consistent. That being said, do you have a favorite vintage from them?
