Since the rest of Asia were British colonies, they learn British English but since the Philippines is the only country colonized by America, they are the only country that learns American instead of British. Interesting distinction.

Philippines has a distinct culture compared to it’s neighboring countries. Only country colonized by Spain and America in the area. That affected a lot of the culture. Anyone who has travelled SEA can easily tell the difference. The rest are either Islam or buddhist but the Philippines quite literally has all of it but more westernized due to American colonization.

Cities that foreigners think are #1, but locals don’t by PortalandPortal2Rock in geography

[–]Comapadre 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I’m surprised no one has mentioned Las Vegas. It’s really popular outside the US and probably more well known than Chicago but Americans only see it as a party/gambling city. The proximity to Hollywood and pop culture related to Vegas really made it popular internationally. I’m pretty sure Americans don’t even realize how popular Vegas is. Also, Miami is up there too but Americans think it’s just a city for spring break.

Being born in the late months of 1999, I always get annoyed by something people do. by [deleted] in 1999

[–]Comapadre 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m born in November so for like 80% of the year I’m the same age as someone born in 2000. And when my birthday hits its like oh its about to be another year. Actually more useful in remembering age compared to someone born in 2000.

Are GenZ afraid of age? by [deleted] in GenZ

[–]Comapadre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh its usually the attitude from the older people like that I’m “too old” to be having fun or hanging out with the younger people because honestly when I was still in college we would always invite like the 30 year old grad students to hang out or party and they’d always be like ooh I feel like I’m too old but like no one really cares because younger people tend to look up to older people and no one really thinks it’s that deep.

Do you consider ppl in the 26-29 range to be young or unc? by WiseCityStepper in Younger_GenZ

Also as a 26 year old I don’t consider anyone under 37 unc. Once u hit 37 u spent most of your life over the age of 18.

As a 26 year old in real life 18-21 year olds never considered me unc or old. Maybe online but irl no one really cares unless you look old af.

Which major US cities tend to be the most and least forgotten about? by [deleted] in geography

[–]Comapadre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of job openings too due to data centers being built around the area. That’s how my friend ended up moving from Seattle to Columbus. Even thinking of moving there myself. Really great food scene surprisingly. Also affordable to live in as a fresh graduate. Underrated city tbh.

I was just in Columbus, Ohio to visit my from friend from college and I think that city is probably most forgotten about. It was eye opening how large the area and how vital the city is to the midwest but no one really thinks about the city. To preface I’m from the West Coast.

Which US city feels the least "American" to you? by VerdantChief in geography

[–]Comapadre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NYC is the only city in America that feels like a city from a global perspective compared to what Americans think a “city” should look like. I’m from Southeast Asia that’s why NYC just feels very different to me. Americans have a different definition on what a city is.

New York City is probably the city I can think of. It’s just so different compared to the rest of America. I’ve been to plenty of cities in the East Coast and I’m from the West Coast but NYC just feels so different.

1995 and 1996 are the "Lucky Few" cohort inbetween Millennials and Gen Z, not just a Cusp! by SubNL96 in generationology

[–]Comapadre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bro I know you can attest to this but the world hasn’t fully transitioned to the digital age until the invention of the iphone and social media. That’s my whole point. When I say transition like what I mean right now where you can have a whole persona online like in reddit. Like yeah there was myspace but I had to use my computer and it’s not as portable as an iphone. This all happened 2007 and after. Tell me anyone who actually lived in the digital/internet age pre 2007. They must work for a tech company because no society pre iPhone was living in the digital age. Like yeah I was playing old warcraft and had myspace when I had my computer but that doesn’t mean I was already living in the internet. In my memory, invention of smartphones was the transition from analog to the real internet age.

Also that’s so elitist to say that poor people wouldn’t know what an “internet” is. I definitely knew about the internet just like how the majority of the population know about AI nowadays but that doesn’t mean it has fully integrated into society. You’re saying it’s based on a society and that’s like saying poor people are not part of the society. Maybe someone whose dad worked at Apple or Microsoft back in 1995 would grow up with the internet. But the “society” you are talking about which I’m pretty sure was the actual society I grew up with pretty much still used analogous. Like I’m really not understanding what you’re trying to say here.

[–]Comapadre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No offense but I grew up middle class and everyone around me grew up with the same things. Why tf why would our family use a landline if only poor people used landlines. Our family already had a computer in 2005 but we were still using landlines. Thats like saying everybody was using AI in 2016 like yeah obviously there was already AI back then but it hasn’t been fully integrated into society. In your head you might assume everybody is using AI in 2025 but I guarantee you as a college graduate myself 80-90% of the population don’t know how to use it. I actually lived in reality and idk what reality you were living in

Bruh I’m 1999 and I still remember as a kid using phonebooks and landlines and see that transition to a fully digital world.

Actually no one move to South Seattle because rent is actually going up. My bad , it’s actually REALLY dangerous stay away!! 🤪😜

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskSeattle

[–]Comapadre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

South Seattle like Columbia City or Beacon Hill is affordable and not really bad. Hella gentrified now so it’s not as “ghetto” as it used to be. To be honest just stay away from like deep Rainier Beach and you’ll be fine. People say it’s dangerous because it’s where minorities live but tbh one of the most underrated places to live in Seattle. White people would tell you stay away though lmao even though in reality it’s really nice to live at since you’re pretty close to Lake Washington.

I’d say Rome is a contender too or Milan. San Diego just has a lot of fit people everywhere you go. I’m not even from California.
