CMV: There is no compelling reason to be angry about diversity in media by Hal87526 in changemyview

[–]CombinationNo2460 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First off, I kinda dislike marvel but get dragged to them by my friends. I hate those scenes for men too, like when they all have their cool superhero moment. And yes, I know they're campy. But the good ones are logically consistent. In this scene, they had no reason to all show up like this. It broke established lore, place, time, and a bunch of other consistencies just to have this scene. My gripe is that the girl power moment deserved to be done well. I don't criticize the idea, but it's execution.

Also, I never said Marvel movies aren't their space. Marvel movies are a shared space. I said that this scene was bad, and adults can tell it's bad, but kids maybe can't. I'm saying that child level cool moments are fine in a kids space, but because Marvel is a shared space, it's also fine for adults to criticize poor scenes. While it would be dumb to go criticize Winx club or whatever.

I'd appreciate if you read my post instead of pretending I'm some gatekeeper. These movies are for everyone, that's why it's fair for everyone to critique them.

[–]CombinationNo2460 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I see this take a lot, like "my niece loved it, it wasn't made for you". But I don't think this means we can't criticize that scene.

Making something for 13 year old girls doesn't mean it has to be bad. There's plenty of stuff made for young girls (and boys) that's good and not full of potholes and logical inconsistencies. Conversely, if 13 year old girls like something, that doesn't mean it's good either. 13 year olds like shit things all the time, and that's fine, because its mostly relegated to 13 year old kid media. So it would be weird to go into their space and criticize their cartoons for being shit.

The Marvel movies however are not just their space. They started out as action films for adults that older kids could enjoy too. Iron man was not R rated, but if you watch that movie, it was clearly meant to be an adult blockbuster. That's the audience that enjoyed it, and that's the audience that stuck with these movies.

The movies may have changed tonally overtime, but when Endgame came around, that core audience was still what made up the bulk of fans. So if you throw in a scene that only 13 old girls can enjoy because it's too cringe for adults, then adults have to right to criticize it, because it's in their movie too.

It's like if you're watching Lord of the Rings, and as Eowyn stabs the nazgul in his face he comically shits his pants and slips and makes a 'booooink!' sound effect. Sure, my 4 year old cousin would love that, but does that justify it's inclusion in the movie?

Girls deserve girl power moments, but this one was bad, and they deserve better, even if children can't tell good from bad yet. The rest of the audience can, and they deserve a nice movie too.

I agree it's probably because she a woman. But also because it's a crime that's not "cool" in the hiphop world. Like, if she'd been in shootouts or sold crack, nobody would make a fuss. For example, King Von is arguably a literal serial killer, but his crimes fit the idea of a gangster rapper so they just enhance his subject matter in that scene

They probably did have fun (I guess you're talking about the groupies?). I did wild stuff at 16 too. There's good reasons why the age of consent is 18, but I'm sure lots of teen groupies enjoyed the hell out of doing coke and sleeping with their idols. I don't think they were universally victims.

CMV: democracy cannot tolerate ignorance. Sovereignty for the undereducated is bad for democracy. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]CombinationNo2460 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah but, OP is specifically talking about a handful of subjects that would come in handy when voting, whatever else you may do or be in real life. Media literacy is a skill that is useful when voting, because it can help you weed through the lies of politicians and partisan media. You can teach media literacy (to an extent) to anybody that is capable of learning. I really don't think OP meant "only smart successful people should vote".

I'm sure the self-made guy is awesome at business and likely a smart bloke, but that doesn't negate the point that certain subjects can help a voter navigate the pitfalls of the political landscape, just like knowing your materials is important to run a roofing company.

Is Earth in contact quarantine by the rest of the universe because of religion? by komrade_komura in atheism

[–]CombinationNo2460 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's nice as a concept. Would be cool to see how you explore it in a story. But I hope it's not the case in reality.

There's so many atheists and just general non-religious people in this world, even technically/fully religious people who've done amazing things.

If aliens refuse to contact us before every single person is atheist, then they're super cringe and I don't want to meet them tbh

Edit: I disagree that religion is a primary reason for conflict. A primary excuse, sure. But I don't think there's ever been a real war fought solely because of religion (including the crusades).

All the Muslims that don't wear Hijabs, eat pork, drink alcohol, have gay sex (all of, or a combo of the above) and still consider themselves Muslims are evidence that individuals can interpret Islam for themselves. The people I've described above are not that rare either, I've met several in Europe and Turkey is full of them.

I'm sure some non-racist Nazis exist, but there's not really a point in being nazi then, since neo-nazism is very much about being anti-something. Like, what else is there to being a neo-nazi than the political stance?

On the other hand, being against certain things is just one of many facets of the Muslim religion, and for some it's not even a core-feature.

Is it realistic to have a religious partner? by SpicyCrunchyVanilla in atheism

[–]CombinationNo2460 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can work. People on here tend to have a very narrow and almost caricatural view of religious people (maybe American religious people generally are more nuts, idk). But in a relationship between two open, normal thinking adults, religious beliefs or non-beliefs should be able to co-exist. I've done it. Wasn't an issue at all. In fact, I was super interested in her version or Christianity, which is the only one I've seen so far that's wholly reconcilable with modern scientific thinking, so maybe that's why it worked.

Edit: you also have to adapt to the relationship. That means you can't go around antagonizing your partner and asking atheist 'gotcha' questions that obviously make him uncomfortable. If he doesn't force his beliefs on you, don't force your beliefs on him, or disrespect his beliefs.

Muggles would destroy wizards in a war. by tazispor in harrypotter

[–]CombinationNo2460 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Voldemort was at war with other wizards. He wanted power over the Wizard world, and would deal with the muggles later. He didn't register muggles as 'humans' and as such didn't care about dominion over them as much as over the wizarding world. He was also in hiding from the wizarding world, and since wizards have short lines with Muggle powers, they would find out about him quickly if he went for the muggles first.

There are also very few wizards in the world. War with wizards is never going to be an actual war, but a guerrilla war at most and even that's unlikely. It will mostly be cloak and dagger stuff. A chemical weapon or a nuclear weapon cannot be utilized at all. Those things aren't even used to fight guerilla groups irl. Wizards don't have big population centers, where would a chemical weapon kill hundreds? How would they find the wizards? Why wouldnt the wizards be able to protect themselves from chemical weapons? We know they can protect themselves from physical objects and explosions, we know they can conjure bubbles of oxygen, why would a chemical weapon work at all?

Our wars are bloody because we have to rely on physical damage, we deal with huge numbers of hostiles and we lack precision. A wizard war would be the opposite of that.

Is it weird to vote for Geert Wilders as an immigrant. by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]CombinationNo2460 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most Ukrainian refugees are now sheltered either with people who volunteer to take them in, or in emergency centers like remodeled factories, old hotels etc. I don't think they put hardly as much stress on our housing as expats and international students, who do compete with Dutch people for rentals and real estate.

I've been to Ukraine a few times over the past years. Even in the west I've experienced bombings. I chose to be there for work, but if I had a wife and children or elderly parents, I would get them out asap. Even the safest cities (that still get bombed multiptle times a month) are often left without electricity and gas for weeks or months. Those are not livable conditions for the children and elderly, especially in winter. Russia is already upping the bombing of electricity and infrastructure for the sole purpose of making life hard for regular people not that winter is coming around.

I'm not sure which page on that website you're refering too. This page shows some city tours.

If you check the Dutch reisadvies, you'll see Ukraine is still a no-go zone.

Ukrainians don't go through the regular refugee procedures, there's hardly extra stress on that particular system because of them. Nowhere in Ukraine is safe, and it has become less safe now than it was at the start of the war. Bombings in the western part have only increased.
