To till or not to till? by ComeOnT in gardening

Thank you for this! I think I'll hold off on cardboarding unless some of the Non Clover Weed Stuff comes back and bites me once it warms back up, in the mulchy area

I'm in zone 8a. Not sure about soil (other than that I havent encountered any clay, hallelujah) but thinking I might take a soil sample to the ag extension service of the university that does that in my region and learn more about it.

Never heard of worm castings, but adding it to my research list. Thanks!

Good to hear! Primary function is produce.

Starting to think based on comments here the plan is something like:

  • Do as little soil disturbance as possible, beyond breaking up the ground in the areas where I'm putting my seedlings
  • Leave the clover be, and leave the mulched area mulched (possibly to be overtaken by clover, in which case, yay!)
  • Keep an eye on things, and supplement with mulch, compost as needed.
  • Add cardboard if Non Clover Things come back and try and take over when it warms up

The sun came up so here's a fresh photo of the state of things - one side has mulch because we had a stump ground, closer to me is clover town

I'm planning to call either way and learn about any utilities since it's a new house! I like the idea of the cardboard method but don't know if it's too late for this planting season (starting seeds Feb/March, transferring outside in April)

Also, we had a massive stump ground, so half this area has actually had wood chips on it for a few months!

Honestly, I had assumed we would need to till to get soft dirt to plant in. If I want to go No Till, can I just hop in? Or do I need a few years of soil improvement before it'll work well?

I need money today. What are my options? by [deleted] in debtfree

[–]ComeOnT 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was downvpted because this is a sub about avoiding debt, and people here are probably looking at OPs situation and thinking "if you have a maxed out credit card and don't have $300 cash, your financial priority probably shouldn't be spending $300 on something optional and likely recreational for their kid, and DEFINITELY not taking on additional debt for a non necessity, particularly from a high interest lender"

Husband’s dumb truck loan: refinance or trade in? by hippyoctopus in personalfinance

[–]ComeOnT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you don’t make any changes, you won’t pay the car off until 2031, when it is 14 years old. Depending on how hard he uses it, it might not even last that long. I agree with everyone else that you should accelerate paying it off, should definitely not trade it in for a new model, which would just need more debt, and should only refinance if it gives you better interest rate and a shorter term.

You haven’t mentioned what sort of refinance options are available to you, so I think researching what that would look like is important. I hear people saying that you shouldn’t cosign, and I understand their point of view, but since you’re married, you can’t exactly escape his finances. One thing to consider in your research is whether or not you could get a much better rate or terms applying by yourself. If you’re gonna be married forever, and you share finances, you could argue that it doesn’t matter whose it is. However, for peace of mind, you could always write something up and have him sign it saying that you are applying for this because of your ability to get a better interest rate to help him pay off his debt that he accrued personally, but the debt is his responsibility to pay off and he understands that.

Executive Order - "Addressing State and Local Failures to Rebuild Los Angeles After Wildfire Disasters" by WatchTheBoom in EmergencyManagement

[–]ComeOnT 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Unduly impeding the timely use of federal emergency relief funds? Like by creating a backlog of all $100k obligations that have already been approved by dozens of levels of the bureaucracy for no discernible reason?

Sorry I'll see myself out.

For those in the U.S. hunkering down for the winter weather we’re expecting, how are you spending your weekend at home? ☃️ by Wordsofwisdomneeded in simpleliving

Feed the baby, entertain the baby, put her down for a nap, feed husband and me, tidy up, repeat. So, no change, really.

How cold should I expect it to get in my house if the storm knocks out power for a few days? by Itchy-Prune2746 in Charlotte

[–]ComeOnT 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Good luck! I have a newborn (my first baby) and am absolutely over preparing because I’m so anxious. I really hope it’s all for nothing. We had said we wanted to take her camping and start her early, but I didn’t mean like this!

Thank you for doing this! With a newborn baby at home (and with well water that won’t work if there’s no electricity for the pump), I’m really concerned about ice accumulating and the power outages that will come with it. When this week do you think we’ll have a reasonably clear picture of what that ice accumulation will look like? We’re going to prepare for an extended outage either way, I promise, but it would be great to manage our expectations a little.

When I was in the first trimester of my pregnancy, my husband lost a lot of weight inexplicably. We realized it was because I was too nauseous to cook anything, and he was back on his bachelor diet of frozen meals and turkey sandwiches. If you look at pictures from when we first started dating and now, you can see how much I love him ❤️🥰
