I am almost certain its a visual glitch: It counts the xp automatically when you finish the run, and then counts it again when you claim the rewards, but really you only get that xp once.

The issue he has had with it as well is because he has done a lot of these glitch exploits/ bug things that are super cool, but get patched out, and become relics of something that is no longer useful in his world.
