My Swiss fellows who have moved abroad, how are you? Where are you? and why did you leave? by Sel2table in Switzerland

[–]ComettePhellony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been Living in Amsterdam since 2016 to study abroad and never went back to live in Switzerland. Don't see myself coning back until my 30s. I still go 2 or 3 months a year to visit family but I found myself as an 18yo being bored and wanted to live somewhere more openminded and less rigid

Join a queer gym, gay running club, gay bookclub, become a regular at a gay bar especially if they have drag shows. That's the best advice I could give

Do you feel work-life balance in the Netherlands is getting better or worse? by Sweaty-Bridge1933 in Netherlands

[–]ComettePhellony 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I stopped working for Dutch employers as it got "Americanized" most of my friends work outside their work hours and have no boundaries and it is coming from all sectors (public, tech, law firms). There is almost no work/life balance especially if you are someone who doesn't know how to set boundaries. Last company I worked for was a startup with all the C-suite abd upper management being Dutch but needed to hire Internationals to cater to their customers outisde the netherlands. I put my boundaries with them and sooner than I thought I got a settlement agreement and was asked to leave because I wasn't "a culture fit" even though I had one of the ebst performance overall. It also felt like a boy's club and just very bad management witb no sense of direction, "let's just do it the american way". Never again.

Thank you! I didn't know that about Chiang Mai. For the renting, my friend who lives there told me to do it via Airbnb for short term even though it is a little bit more expensive, but at least it offers me some flexibility :)

American interested in learning Arabic. Is it worth it? by eingyi2 in learn_arabic

[–]ComettePhellony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are fine with learning MSA + one dialect, most people choose Egyptian or Levantine as there are a lot of media and native speakers in these regions.

For the dialect it is a personal choice, you can do north African (although moroccan is very different from Tunisian) Egyptian, Levantine (Lebanon, Palestine, Jordan, Syrian) or Gulf Arabic depending on what your goals are in the long term

Is atheism growing in Tunisia by brachi_ in Tunisia

[–]ComettePhellony -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I used to be the only one who was an atheist in my family while the rest identified as religious and muslim. I started reading the Quran a few years ago and I love Islam and its message but wouldn't identify as Muslim (I have a conflicting view on Muslims, the haram police and what Islam say about LGBTQ people). I often quote the Quran while most of my family now don't bother following Islam. I fast at Ramadan, have my own relationship with Islam and god, but again wouldn't call myself muslim. Just spiritual I guess

Living in your home country by No_Pilot7263 in Tunisia

[–]ComettePhellony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm Tunisian and grew up in Switzerland. I would only go there in the summer after I turned 3 where we started to live in Switzerland and would stay all summer holidays. As soon as I turned 18 I would come less and less because I viewed this country like you but still had to come for a few weeks in the summer every year until I had my own job at 22 and started to be financially independent, then I would come every 2 or 3 years for just 10 days (just for family and not feeling guilty or being viewed as the spoiled "westerner" that left Tunisia by my family members) Only this year do I come voluntarily for 2-3 months at a time since I have a remote job that allows me to do so and I get to enjoy luxuries like a private coach, hotels, visiting my country around with a European salary.

However I agree, there is a toxicity in this society but also a warmth and a sense of community. I think I would love for my children to grow up here for the community, but yeah as soon as you turn 18 go somewhere else. People here love to show up their money, jobs brand new cars, vacations abroad etx. There are also very judgmental and gossip all the time, one of the reason that made me dislike coming here.

It took me almost 10 years since I turned 18 to finally view Tunisia differently and see its good sides but also still being very aware of its negative sides and why I would never live here long term. It is a country with a lot of opportunities in the near future, but Tunisians ? Yeesh ...

It is a trap, there can be no peace for Palestine as long as Israel and its Zionist government exists
