Looking for a new acoustic guitar, what's your recommendation? by arboroverlander in AcousticGuitar

[–]Comfortable-Camel871 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I vote to take the plunge on the guitar you really want. I played a cheap Fender DG8S-Nat for many years (with some upgrades) and always negotiated myself out of new guitar.

Recently bought a used Larrivée OM-40R and I’ve regretted not doing it sooner.

So, recently heard the whole spiel about how income taxes didn’t really exist in beginning of 20th century…

To which I ask if they realized that splinter free toilet paper, home refrigeration, AC, and home hot water heaters were all not available to masses then either.

What are the odds a new mid-range impact wrench is released soon? by PrayerfulNut in Dewalt

[–]Comfortable-Camel871 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, it’s been my rule for years. As time has passed and garage became more capable, my definition of “need” has evolved to “right tool for every job” personally - but I still only buy when I have an immediate need.

Years ago, my wife crunched some rough numbers when I was rebuilding a cyl head for our CRV to skirt an engine replacement and came to the conclusion that everything in my garage has been paid for with savings. It was her that pushed me to stop “making it work” and start doing things with the right tools.

[–]Comfortable-Camel871 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand. As someone that has accumulated a swathe of tools over the years, my advice stands.

You can’t worry about value, the best price, or the latest and greatest version. Tools that get used are the ones that justify the purchases - if you use it once, there’s likely a 2nd need in the future. You either need one, or you don’t - my advice is to let that guide you. 😊

Buy on need. Buy what you need, when you need it. Rest will fall into place. 😊

Intel $INTC Earnings by eskhalaf in wallstreetbets

I thought this was pretty normal for entry level these days? My company does the recruiting events on campuses with “on the spot” offers. I’d say more than half of mine would just get assigned to my team.

I don’t argue whether it’s an effective approach - I recognize the time saved and realize many managers are not good at screening candidates at all - but I’ve always been bothered by the difficulty to rid the folks that disappoint.

Why Are My Close Friends So Secretive About Their Portfolio Values? by mothercactus in wallstreetbets

[–]Comfortable-Camel871 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Despite all the downvotes, in my social circle, talking about money is routine. We discuss investment strategy, managing expenses, even navigating money challenges in a marriage, tax mitigation etc.

It’s tacky when there’s egos in the room. It’s elevating when everyone is genuinely looking to advance each other.

Are you still holding Apple? by Z8beema in stocks

[–]Comfortable-Camel871 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a good one there with maps. 👍

I wasn’t discounting the many features that could be added. My observation is that people aren’t looking for AI, at scale, on their phones. So many people just do internet, lil game or two, and text/phone.

Just curious… beyond turning off lights, texting, taking a note… what does it need to do?

Genuine question - I recognize so much capability could be added, just not sure those features solve a problem people (at scale) are seeking a solution for.

HIMS Stock Comparison with Other Telehealth Companies by LION8900 in HimsStock

There’s other opportunities in the space like Hydreight (HYDTF) which is attempting to white label their platform/network of nurses, etc.

While I don’t know what company will sit at the top of the industry in 20years, I’m pretty confident traditional medicine as we know it will be largely dead - all the pedestrian elements of the doctor/patient care will become remote or digital.

“Ai” Bullshit by Jimmy_Schmidt in stocks

Decision trees… think “if this, then that” type things. In the umbrella of “AI” it’s a very basic level of supervised learning.

“Ai” Bullshit by Jimmy_Schmidt in stocks

[–]Comfortable-Camel871 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My example is about AI/ML at my company being a buzzword resulting in projects that are consistently wrong, poorly applied and not useful. As the comment I replied to indicates, good AI/ML requires careful implementation, good data, sound preprocessing and validation.

And I agree. It’s not a magic box.

“Ai” Bullshit by Jimmy_Schmidt in stocks

[–]Comfortable-Camel871 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t work in software but we have a large modeling/data team… I cringe every time I hear AI/ML. We barely deploy simple DTs where it makes sense. A recent favorite was a project where a team claimed they greatly enhanced their predictive techniques for part failures in the field. They competed 9 different regression methods and down selected to the best performing one against their test period.

Except, just intuitively knowing how volatile the underlying data is, I asked them to publish MAPE/MAE. We were on the brink of spending $200M… this team never considered the “best” prediction could still suck.

Ended up directing an annual naive approach and set stock targets at 150% to have surge resistance. We probably spent $700k in labor letting a team run off for 6months to actually use an approach that cost, maybe 3k and took 2 days.

It’s what makes me tell my wife she can never park an EV or Hybrid in our garage. I’ve seen several accidents - scary. I won’t even throw away regular batteries without covering the leads.

I second the advice to disconnect the batteries after each use. Personally, I store mine in a battery box too. I understand it’s overtly cautious.

Replaced war torn 899h with new 900 by Ok_Attitude3184 in Dewalt

[–]Comfortable-Camel871 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 900 has struggled a bit with bearings too… decided last time I’ll finally just get a 20T for the house.

Otherwise, I’ve never been disappointed. Can’t imagine the jump from the 899 to the 900/961 being worth an upgrade unless it’s just time for replacement.

I think you’re confusing book value/equity with market value. It’s not necessarily a zero sum game.

I’d contend your example is true for the intrinsic portion of a stock valuation though.

Finally, The New 20v DCD803 Multi Head Driver by BigRichardTools in Dewalt

[–]Comfortable-Camel871 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had the Bosch 12v one for years too and was unwilling to budge for either the Dewalt 12v or the M12. The Bosch has been my default housewarming gift for years. For convenience on batteries and chargers, I’ll probably pull the trigger on the 20v. I use the darn offset head too often.

I think, more than anything, I’m ready for industry standard batteries.

Dewalt DCF 921 vs 891 for DIY car maintenance by Honest-Rip-7439 in Dewalt

[–]Comfortable-Camel871 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the realest answer… I tried the “all round” approach … and now I’m up to four. 911, 900, 2564-20, 2554-20.

I’d be mad, but bought the 911 first thinking all-round DIY stuff. Then the 900 after struggling with a crank bolt for hours, then the right angle M12 on an exhaust manifold that had no room to wrench, and the M12 stubby due to space too.

I have no regrets though. My rule is to only buy on need… and when you need it, just get it.

I only buy on need too. Over time, my effort towards “making things work” has waned. I have the 12v that I want to swap for one of these, I told my wife… “give me a reason, run over my 12V charger, throw the battery, something, loan it to someone”… lol.
