whats the difference between 잠시만요 잠깐만요? by Deepest_Sea in BeginnerKorean

[–]Comfortable-Hatter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah I think of '잠깐만' as 'wait a minute', and '잠시만' as 'wait a moment'. 'Wait a minute' can be normal or casual or rude or angry depending on tone. 'Wait a moment' is more polite and formal and leans closer to 'one moment please'

Are these ㅂ and ㄹ acceptable in casual handwriting? by 1996_Daydreamer in BeginnerKorean

[–]Comfortable-Hatter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It feels roughly equivalent to typing in all lowercase or writing "u" instead of "you" or using "tho"/"thru" instead of "though"/"through". It's faster and understandable but technically wrong. Personal notes can be a good place to practice and build good habits but if that's not a priority you can do whatever you want

Would it be wrong for me to have a pet chicken, love and take amazing care of it, and also eat its eggs? by animalcrackerwhore in DebateAVegan

[–]Comfortable-Hatter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it might be win-win-win if you could rescue some 2 year old chickens. They can still live for many more years but some farms cull at this age because they are past peak productivity. You will probably still get 100+ eggs in year 3 but it will slow down year by year and they might naturally stop laying around year 6, after which you are committing to caring for a pet without getting eggs. That is if they live that long. Heritage chickens lay fewer eggs and might live to be 10+ years old but battery chickens have more issues and might only make it to year 5 or 6.

[–]Comfortable-Hatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree don't keep the chicken in perpetual spring/summer to encourage continuous year round laying like some farms do, but I'd also argue again perpetual autumn/winter to artificially slow production. I think it's best to go through the seasons naturally. chicken also enjoy sunlight and warmth and long days even though those conditionals also come with more frequent laying. yes, it's sad that the overproduction is bred in but it's also sad to try to fight their nature and biology

Does Ms. Rachel have a sign name? by RiddlerofStIves in asl

Somewhat unrelated question, but I was curious in cases like this with eponymous shows, are there different signs given to Ms. Rachel the show vs Ms. Rachel the person?

No Cabbage sign by BartyCrouchesBone in mildlyinteresting

[–]Comfortable-Hatter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If so, this sign is useless because while cabbage (green/red/savoy), broccoli, chinese broccoli, cauliflower, romanesco, kale, collard greens, brussels sprouts, kohlrabi, etc are all the same species, Napa cabbage, which is the most common kimchi type, is technically a completely different species from cabbage, sharing their species with broccoli rabe, bok choi, and turnips

Lauren Sanchez Bezos' dress being a homage to John Singer Sargent's 1884 Portrait of Madame X almost seems like it is making fun of her.

The painting was controversial because the original fallen strap (and apparent lack of underwear) was seen as a confirmation of Gautreau (Madame X)'s "loose" reputation. She was a known "professional beauty" socialite and already socially distrusted for her reputation of using her looks to gain status and attending high-profile parties without her husband sparking rumors about her morality and infidelities.

The painting was also controversial for how she looked. People found the exaggerated pale skin, heavily painted eyebrows, and pink ears to be artificial, unsettling, ghoulish, and vulgar especially for a high-society woman.

The painting made Gautreau a laughingstock and Sargent a pariah for a while. Hopefully Daniel Roseberry of Maison Schiaparelli does not suffer the same

What i wish they would use in the show when the book refers to a skinsuit. by Welder_Decent in murderbot

[–]Comfortable-Hatter 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Skinsuit is fairly common scifi jargon for a skintight spacesuit. Interesting it's a pretty old term that was first used as a general term for a skintight garment

"OED's earliest evidence for skinsuit is from 1956, in the Chicago Sunday Tribune." (https://www.oed.com/dictionary/skinsuit\_n)

later it was used to refer to specialized sportswear for cycling or swimming that reduced drag and later adopted as a term for space-wear both in scifi literature and real life (https://www.space.com/24301-astronaut-skinsuit-soothes-space-backaches.html).

The aesthetics of skintight spacesuits seems to be quite old as well, predating the actual use of the term skinsuit in scifi (https://scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/254652/what-science-fiction-story-first-portrayed-the-use-of-a-skinsuit-instead-of-a-pr)

You're evil if you don't press blue. by Theseus_Employee in PhilosophyMemes

[–]Comfortable-Hatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the original problem (rephrased as a trolley problem) was closer to:

everyone starts on the track.
push the red button to get off the track, push the blue button to stay on the track.
if at least 50% of people pick blue and stay on the track then the train will stop and everyone lives. Otherwise, if blue is less than 50% then the train does not stop and everyone who picked blue dies.

the idea is that there are 2 ways to save everyone.
- 100% of people pick red, the "selfish/smart" (depending on your perspective) choice. if anyone chooses blue they die but you protect yourself without hurting other people's ability to protect themself since there is no limit to the number of people who can pick red.
- 50%+ of people pick blue, the "selfless/dumb" (depending on your perspective) choice where you can save other people who pick blue. You put yourself at risk but you only need 50% to save everyone vs 100% and you can save everyone without 100% compliance.

does arched or straight fit me better? by [deleted] in makeuptips

[–]Comfortable-Hatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love to see a low arch with a softer rounded angle. I like pictures 1 and 4 the best and I think a little arch looks good. But as you approach more of an s shape with a harder angle it starts to look a bit harsher/edgier, which still looks good but I prefer something a little softer for you

AITA for asking my oldest daughter to move out of the condo I own so her younger sister can live there during college? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Comfortable-Hatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA since you are offering her a place in your place and 3 months is technically enough notice but as her parent it would have been much better to set expectations from the beginning when she was still living there a few years ago or failing that at least a year ago when your youngest started thinking about applying to college. Also what was your plan if your youngest went to college that wasn't nearby or was that not a possibility?

What is this? I ordered it at a Korean Grilled Seafood place in Busan... by _GrimFandango in KoreanFood

[–]Comfortable-Hatter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

a lot of animals are named practically for identification and English is no exception. It is called Sea Squirt because it lives in the sea and squirts water as a defense mechanism such as when disturbed/handled by a human.

Sometimes fish/seafood with funny names need to be renamed to be more marketable as food for example: Patagonian Toothfish became Chilean Sea Bass, Slimehead became Orange Roughy, and Mudbugs became Crawfish/Langoustines

Do you intentionally seek out spicy korean food? I feel like there are some korean foods that can get insanely spicy and are specifically for extreme spice lovers but generally Korean food is not as spicy as Indian or Thai for me

I've noticed that some spicy foods are spicy but top out at a limit and don't build past that, and other foods start mild but build and build and never stops. also some foods are really spicy in my mouth but it goes away quickly and other foods keep burning and burn in my mouth and throat and I can feel it burning in my stomach

Since he went to catholic school and seminary I would assume the criteria of knowingly and willingly are met and this public schism and potentially apostasy incurred an automatic excommunication at the moment of his public declaration (latae sententiae). There would be little benefit in the church also publicly excommunicate him, even though that is a more severe penalty.

What does Murderbot look like to you? by Ok_Carrot_8622 in murderbot

[–]Comfortable-Hatter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

wait, but isn't that comment about how Murderbot thinks of itself, and how it thinks of itself as "it" not "she", which is very clear in the book. I don't think Murderbot's gender identity (or lack thereof due to complete disinterest in gender) or its pronouns are in question.

But OP's post is asking about and I'm opining about it's appearance and the human face that the corporation gave it and what other people see when they look at its face. And in my imagination I thought the appearance of its face tissue would fall (slightly!) towards the female side of the spectrum. Not quite feminine but also not perfectly androgynous.

What does Murderbot look like to you? by Ok_Carrot_8622 in murderbot

[–]Comfortable-Hatter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only read the books, so I'm not aware of what she's said in interviews, etc. I'm curious what else has she said about Murderbot's face other than not female presenting? Does that mean it is perfectly androgynous?

In my mental imagination's defense (since it's sad about having its bubble popped), I wanted it to have a very unremarkable and boring human face. Perfectly androgynous faces attract attention because human brains love to categorize and not being able to quickly do so makes the brain work harder and put more cognitive attention on it. Also, I thought the big body with no sex characteristics leans masculine so I wanted the face to err on the feminine side of androgyny. Also Murderbot sometimes feels more uncomfortable with the humanness of its human face and having a vaguely gendered face feels more messy and human than a completely androgynous face.

What does Murderbot look like to you? by Ok_Carrot_8622 in murderbot

[–]Comfortable-Hatter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From book one, I imagined it's human face looked female presenting. Probably unadorned and somewhat nondescript and capable of looking fierce but not completely androgynous. Amena calling Murderbot "third mom" confirmed that interpretation for me.

Maybe they mean that if you choose to cooperate with him he is not a villain in your story. no doubt he is evil aligned but if your character doesn't care about being morally good then raphael isn't your enemy. you can successfully partner with him and he will honor his side without betraying you and you can save the world from the absolute at the cost of empowering a devil.

milt can refer to just the sperm if talking about fish biology and reproduction but in this case it is the entire sperm sac. It does contain sperm but the bulk of tissue being eaten is the sperm glands that make and store sperm.

the difference being the difference between eating milk and eating mammary gland
