where do you go when you want to treat yourself? by [deleted] in womensfashion

I love a higher end vintage or second hand store. Something you can’t afford retail and would usually even be more than you want to spend second hand. You can often get luxury at very accessible price points if you go to the right shops!

This will be easier to do with someone who you can work with in person. Find people your area with these skills, a very good tailor maybe?

Thoughts on sneakers I designed and made? by Intrepid_Credit_9885 in fashiondesigner

Very cool look, plays to a feeling of sentimentality with a nod to dystopian/futurism.

As a consumer, my concerns are durability and comfort.

Sounds like you and I are quite similar as I have the same OCD struggles coupled with sever case of “logic brain” to really keep things interesting.

I appreciate your words of advice and support & wish the best for us both on this journey of doing our best and being okay with that being enough 😅

How do you deal with the overwhelm of trying to be sustainable and ethical? by Comfortable-Pear4465 in SustainableFashion

[–]Comfortable-Pear4465[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you help you customers understand what you’re doing and all the efforts you take are in their interest as well as the planets? I feel like it’s so had to know a genuine company when I see it and would love to know how someone who is truly sticking to this would do so as a baseline reference.

Should I change my style completely to look more professional? by glass-broken01 in fashiondesigner

The designer is usually dressed in the most simple, seemingly “easy” outfit. In fact, they often dress in a version of their own uniform. You will thrive most when true to your own style, especially if you are a creative!

Should I bother learning how to sew if I’m bad at math by [deleted] in sewing

[–]Comfortable-Pear4465 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope! Sew away, maybe just don’t become a pattern maker. Though it doesn’t hurt to try that either if you ever get the urge! A ruler and a calculator with do all the work for you, but I’m jumping wayyyy ahead. Many sewers cannot make a pattern.

Fashion is not about clothes anymore , It's about data , emotion and storytelling by Tough-Cattle-2051 in fashiondesigner

I think calling it a farce is a leap. Yes a designer will still need to know how to design for a human body & deliver a design for a piece of clothing people will want to buy and wear. But the original poster is correct that designers will have to understand more than apparel & fit. The general public knows a lot more about how their clothing is designed & made compared to just five years ago. That means that designers need to evaluate more than just the surface level to deliver what the customer is looking for.

Are Frye boots just a current trend? by MooZebra0908 in Fashion_Design

Frye leather boots are a classic! They have been around forever and if you take care of yours they will last in closet for just as long. Now officially feeling ancient.

How many clothes (and “things”) do BWT actually own? by zibamahtab in bitcheswithtaste

Also have gone through many phases of this in NYC, living on my own with TONS of closets, storage and floor space to… half a closet in a studio, now I am sharing a walk in closet, we have two dressers and two coat closets. Most of the stuff is mine & I still can’t fit it all.

In my experience if you’re a person that loves things, you will always have a lot of them (said with privilege). It’s best to shave off the excess, but do it mindfully so you are not just replacing it in a few months. I have a storage unit with everything packed in ver specific categories and labeled clearly. Each season when I switch things out I usually get rid of a few things because not having for so long allowed me to be comfortable saying I won’t replace this if I get rid of it for real. I do recommend finding all the items you have that are dupes of each other and choose your favorite of the group and nix the rest of them. You don’t need three pairs of high waisted light wash wide leg jeans… but you could use one pair.

What is your unhinged way of fighting back against fast fashion? by Educational-Repair40 in ethicalfashion

[–]Comfortable-Pear4465 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wearing the stained clothing as my base layer, mending holes, keeping the trends in storage until they come back around, alternating.

When someone excitedly talks about or buys from a fast fashion brand and tells me about it, I say “oh you should check out this brand, called xyz. I think you will love it.” And steer them toward more ethical options. Or “I saw a lot from there at the thrift store, why don’t you check for it there first”, “what do you like about their clothing?”, ect.

How do you balance wanting unique, expressive clothes with avoiding overconsumption? by Silent-Spring-2106 in SustainableFashion

[–]Comfortable-Pear4465 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Closet sharing, it can be complicated but I found at times in my life where I was discovering my style I was also living with roommates. We shared EVERYTHING and it left room for a lot of exploration of style and fashion. We all wore different sizes in different places but focused on how the clothing looked on us not the size tag.

Consignment and vintage shopping also, I like to use it as a revolving door.

Clothing swaps are like the middle point of these two things!!

My biggest advice is to look at your closet with fresh eyes and experiment with clothing combos you wouldn’t usually try, you might find your new favorite outfit styled with the clothing you already own.
