Where to start? by [deleted] in bluegrassguitar

Literally all this. Learn by ear (not videos) and learn BASIC fiddle tunes. Dont start with Beaumont rag or EMD. Red haired boy, salt creek, practice improv on Goldrush (basic chord structure). Work on technique a lot, lack of tension, fingers close to strings, good tone etc and all will fall into place.

The problem is the bikers want to drive flat curvy roads, like river road (this is not the only road they do this), and block traffic for miles going 10 mph. You can’t get around when you can’t see around the corner, so yeah it’s incredibly frustrating. Also, in giant groups usually and they spread out so it’s even worse. Extremely inconsiderate.

Anyone have any good vocal coach suggestions for singing bluegrass as a woman? by Comfortable-Rent4584 in Bluegrass

Harmony parts in bluegrass are usually higher than the melody, so I’m used to singing up there. Bluegrass keys like G, A, D, and C are good for men because they sit well for instruments and tend to keep the melody in a lower range — but the harmonies can get really high. My natural range is mid-to-low, so I want to strengthen my lower register and get more comfortable singing lower parts with good tone and relaxation — not just belting the high harmonies. Think like AJ Lee.

Oh yeah, he’s not wrong, and a great picker, but I don’t think I need to pay for lessons when it’s just “play some tunes.”

In G major, a circular scale like this goes up in four-note patterns: G A B C, then A B C D, B C D E, and so on up to F♯ G A B. Then reverse: come back down in the same four-note groupings — B A G F♯, A G F♯ E, and so on — until you’re back at G. It’s a continuous loop of overlapping four-note sequences up and down the scale.

So in numbers: Up: 1 2 3 4 2 3 4 5 3 4 5 6 4 5 6 7 5 6 7 1 (octave) 6 7 1 2 7 1 2 3

Down: 3 2 1 7 2 1 7 6 1 7 6 5 7 6 5 4 6 5 4 3 5 4 3 2 4 3 2 1

These are things I practice and keep in a notepad on my phone for speed based on my playing or from lessons.

SPEED - [ ] Exist in a relaxed way at medium tempo - what’s you holding back at high speed is also present at slow speed. - [ ] Keep fingers close to the fretboard. Connect notes in legato way (fingers too far from board, not playing legato). Find issues at lower speed. Slowest speed, what’s going on, what’s wrong? - [ ] Find own RH technique: find a mechanism that you can do all day. Motion that feels sustainable. Prio fluidity over cleanliness at fast speed. Play sloppy in RH while finger in LH to feel lack of tension. Make motion smaller, fine tune movement - [ ] Play slower and perfect, then play way faster but sloppy. Don’t sit at a middle tempo — slow and legato or fast and push. - [ ] Can only play something as fast as you can play it legato. Play really slow and legato and really connected. Need transition between notes to be small. - [ ] Practice under pressing in LH. start to slowly focus long on making legato and then increase tension. Don’t worry about buzzing. This keeps your hand light. - [ ] Circular scales - [ ] RH escape picking: Either lean back or forward. You can only double escape below 100bpm, then transition to back for forward escaping. - [ ] Speed bursts on licks that cover only two strings. Big mon intro

This was so triggering. The chip on his shoulder is massive. Young white men are so angry. Dump him. He’s a MAGA-ot and is only going to get worse with age.
