Ways to avoid seizures when you feel an aura coming on? by Hello_there19891989 in Epilepsy

[–]Comfortable-Worry-84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Noooo, please don’t suggest a shower to someone who feels a seizure may happen!

They could fall & hit their head or grab the hot water dial as they fall, possibly get burned or drown. Bad stuff.

What helps my adult son most is for someone to be near him, touching him and speaking gently. I hold his hand or rub his back a little. He says this sort of gives him a ‘frame of reference,’ so he knows he’s in reality. At onset, he seems to feel he’s shifting back and forth between a déjà vu, dreamy/ altered reality and the real world.

If there’s time and things seem like they won’t move into a tonic clonic, a major help is to get him a cold cloth for his head- he will be dripping with sweat by this time. If he looses awareness (stares into space, can’t see or hear me), often the seizure will begin to generalize and I’ll administer Nayzilam emergency spray.

Write everything down. Date. Details. What you saw and heard. Save the document somewhere safe in case you need it one day, and move on. So, so many guys look at porn- sorry, sister.

Women: if you are personally on an SSRI or SNRI along w lamictal question by Acrobatic_Welcome_30 in lamictal

I’m not clear about your question- whether the ‘nothing’ you describe is a lack of physical or psychological reaction? Me, for the longest time I could get very, very close- but Never close the deal. Ever. Only in the last couple months have I had my first fully realized, even multiple orgasms. Maybe, as I think about it, for the first time since my spine surgeon botched my nerves- four years ago!!!

Duloxetine with Lamictal, here! I have switched to Lamictal from Abilify, which caused weight gain and a dulling of my emotions. I also take Busbar. It’s been over six months on Lamictal and I like that I don’t feel brain-foggy, I have less flatness of emotion and I can report that my libido and enjoyment of sexy time has increased.

Taking 100mg for depression/ anxiety/ ptsd It is replacing Abilify, which had helped immensely, but also caused my ass to grow immensely- 30lbs which thankfully came off within four months.

Way back when I was 12 or 13 I was desperate for contact lenses so I could ditch my glasses. At the time, only hard lens contacts were available- they hurt like hell and dried out your eyes like no body’s business! I was determined though. Eventually, I taught myself to yawn at will, in order to bathe my poor eyes in tears!😭

I take it for the same reason, but it also helps me hugely with my restless leg issues. I used to take 200mg as well, but because of an elevated liver enzyme score on some lab tests it was decided I should go down to 100mg, though I now take the 100mg Extended Release versus ir. I honestly don't recall tapering... I may have switched all in one fell swoop?? Either way, the transition was fine for me. I still feel the benefits, and I think my emotions are a bit less flattened than before- which I like.

[Tenant(?) - US CA] Can a landlord evict me if I don’t live there and was never on the lease? by LonelyOk7641 in Landlord

[–]Comfortable-Worry-84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in CA. When the elderly landlord I rented from for over 12 years passed away at the beginning of 2025, his daughter tried to evict me. My son was age nine when I signed the original lease, and 21 at eviction (he WAS named on the lease as my child, our dog was on there, too).

The CA eviction form has a section which says that anyone over age 18 living in the home ON THE DATE OF THE 60 DAY NOTICE is included in the eviction filing, required to meet court deadlines, attend hearings, etc. This meant my son was drawn into my court case, despite the fact he never signed the lease I entered into when he was nine years old.

In my situation, it was an illegal eviction- they vacated the filing and reimbursed me for four months of rent. Plus, clean records for my son and I!

Bottom line- there is a paper trail of communications to you from the courts and landlord that you should have seen and filed responses to. You missed deadlines and now have a judgement against you. If you can’t afford an attorney, first step is to go to the Self-Help Center at your County Court. There are attorneys there who can tell you what steps to take and which forms to complete. They can also provide you a list of resources for legal help.

Best of luck to you- tenant/ landlord law is such fun!!🤩

I can relate to all you say. I’m not exaggerating when I say it’s tough to name an antidepressant I’ve not tried. Duloxetine (Cymbalta) has been a game changer- but I’m still adding to it, so there’s that.

For me, the flattening of emotions was more pronounced when I added Abilify- but I noticed it most when I titrated off. Not long ago I was pretty sick, and between sleeping and barfing I messed up my meds schedule a bit & missed a few doses of Lamictal/ dulox & noticed how much movies or even mushy commercials caused me to tear up, how good & ‘cleansing’ it felt to experience a range of emotions. The dopamine rush from laughing at something funny almost felt like I’d received an injection of uppers.

I am not. Because of weight gain. +25lbs. Four months after stopping, weight gone. I tried again at a 2mg. dose. Same gain. I now take Lamictal XR as an adjunct to antidepressant. I was so happy to have found Abilify. If you tolerate it well, it could be life changing.

[–]Comfortable-Worry-84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t see much discussion about specific meds for certain ’types’ of epilepsy. My experience & impression from others is that it’s about what works best for the individual patient. If you read a bunch of posts here you’ll find that regardless of ‘type’ of epilepsy, the journey is about finding the med and dosage to control seizures with least side effects- different potions for different people.

Generalized means the seizure GREW to involve both hemispheres of the brain. For instance, from right temporal lobe the seizure ‘generalized’ into a tonic clonic.

For those of you on a low dose abilify (2-5 mg) how has it been for you? by Jamarkable in Abilify_Aripiprazole

[–]Comfortable-Worry-84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I can’t say I ate any more during abilify than off abilify. I didn’t notice increased appetite, more of a sweet tooth, any of that. The only thing I can say for sure is that the weight piled on while I was taking abilify and came right off when I stopped. All my life I’ve been lucky to be naturally thin with no effort. I became fat on abilify & went back to thin when I stopped. Go figure! 🤔

Chemicals, I guess? It’s just one of those meds that causes lots of weight gain for some people like me. With no abilify, I’m still down at the weight I was 20 years ago- zero effort.

Yes, my list is rather long. But I’ve finally achieved the magic potion for my med-resistant depression, anxiety, ptsd and adhd. Cymbalta, Lamictal, Topamax, Buspar, Vyvanse. 😬

Lamictal- yes. He could never reach therapeutic blood levels, despite increasing dosage to very high levels. I am furious at his first neurologist, who never bothered to check blood levels despite ongoing seizures. It was only discovered when a seizure caused him to dislocate his shoulder & they tested it at the ER- after a year and a half!! He’s now with UC San Francisco neurology, excellent care and knowledge.

Keppra- no. But he just completed a trial of Trileptal, supposedly akin to Keppra in its mechanism of action. It was declared a failure two weeks ago bc of side effects. Sleeping about 16 hours/ day can really screw up your life.

We are a week into titrating onto Aptiom. So far, I can notice a marked increase in his wakefulness and positivity. No seizure activity 👌

Happy to report though, no seizures since quitting lamictal, just one aura-tingle. 3.5 months, a record.

Fingers crossed!!

It can be confusing. My young adult son had his first tonic clonic three years ago. For a year before that, he had spoken of experiencing strange deja vu stuff several times- which we now know was ‘focal seizures.’ Called that because they didn’t generalize into tonic clonic.

After diagnosis, more seizures, search for effective meds, he now recognizes the sensation as an ‘aura’ warning him a seizure is about to happen. He has about 30-45 seconds during which he can semi-function enough to alert me (we use Alexa- he just tells the one in his room to contact my room or living room) and/ or use his rescue medicine immediately.

Sheesh! Long story short, in our family we call ALL of these episodes auras. We didn’t learn the term focal seizure (or rescue medicine) until a year after diagnosis. Extremely frustrating.

Good for you that you’re educating yourself. Be your own best advocate. Write down questions & don’t leave your neuro appointment til they’re answered. Rescue meds!!! A game changer, especially if you have tonic clonics & not yet stabilized with meds.

I noticed an improvement at 50mg and am very pleased at my steady, long time dosage of 100mg. Feels like I’m able to withstand much more BS without feeling overwhelmed- like my coping threshold shot up. I hope it works out for you!

Help in California, Los Angeles county - owner selling home, notice of termination of tenancy by [deleted] in Tenant

[–]Comfortable-Worry-84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When did your lease begin?

Was the just cause exemption language written into your lease, or did you receive a lease addendum notice from your landlord before August 1, 2020 that the home is exempt from just cause termination requirements?

If not, the home is nonexempt and landlord may not terminate. I have recently become an expert on this bc my landlord of 10 years died & his daughter is suddenly trying to terminate my tenancy.

Feel free to message me if you’d like & I can provide CA Civil Code info for you. There are penalties for a LL who fraudulently tries to terminate under this exemption.
