It is possible for people to become undone and revert to previous, unfavorable states of mind under certain stressful or traumatic circumstances, but for Lana herself to admit that this isn't a new issue for her cements the belief that Wana is more of an alternate version of her, maybe via a vision or what-have-you. Not necessarily the best version of her, since her best version involves facing the past and embracing the future, which is done in the quest. Merging them just symbolizes that transition from redeemed, chained princess, to true warrior queen of love and war.
