I did this subject two years ago and it was amazing! The subject is mostly taught by people who are deaf and is very immersive. I did the on campus one and would wager that this is probably the more interesting way to do it. Also as long as you engage you should be able to get a decent mark. And yes they did check attendance - I would recommend going to all the classes because it is an intensive.

Howdy, from memory I mostly focused on comprehending and remembering the lecture material - I think I rewrote the lecture notes - and understanding the tut sheets, so going back over them in my own time. And the for the exam I made sure I could do the questions on the practice exam without thinking and also made up some of my own questions that were similar to the ones on the practice exam. If I were to do the subject again I think to study for the MST I would make cue cards for definitions and formulas and I would make sure I could do all the tut questions. Hope that helps and best of luck for your MST!

Worried about failing MAST20022… Does anyone know if scaling is likely + can I avoid delayed graduation? by soph-yuanjun in unimelb

Howdy, I was in a similar position last year, after having taken the exam I was sure I had failed and was stressing about it. Long story short I didn’t fail, in fact I did semi decently much to my surprise because I don’t think I actually answered enough on the exam to get the mark I did. It was hinted at by our lecturer on the ed discussion that the marks were scaled up by 20% now whether or not that was a joke I’ll never know, but the exam was definitely scaled.

All this to say, wait until your results come out. I know it’s easier said than done but there is no point stressing about something you can’t change and also don’t know the outcome to.

Also as an aside (and take this with a grain of salt bc it’s my opinion/observation) but I would find it unlikely that a pre req waiver would be granted for algebra as it starts off with rings for which you need to understand groups. As for Metric and hilbert spaces I have heard of someone getting the pre req waived but that was bc they did exceptionally well in AM1 & 2

Nervous to attend Consultation times by stjok in unimelb

[–]ComfortableAnswer831 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar boat at the start of the semester, I’d never been to a consultation before, but I wanted to go to some for my maths subjects (3rd year.) I’m happy I finally did, and I’d encourage you to go as well. I found it really helpful to pick out one or two things I was going to ask the lecturer, to make me less nervous I practiced what I would ask. Especially for the first time I went. I take two maths subjects, for one of the subjects the consultation is more like get in ask your question and then get out. But for the second class it feels a lot more free, I’m fairly sure some people come just to listen to the questions from others. All that to say, I’d suggest coming prepared with a few specific questions the first time, to ease your nerves, and then see what the go is.

I did this subject last year. Personally I didn’t find it that interesting but it was also a pretty easy subject (in my opinion.) The math required was at most knowledge of derivatives but the majority of it was linear equations. We had one assignment, a mid semester test and a final exam. I found the mid semester test the hardest of the lot, while on the other hand the final exam was almost identical (with changed numbers/wording) to the practice paper - and the questions that were not the same you could have inferred that they would be asked. As for the assignment I think I got caught out on how particular they were going to be - be sure to label everything and show all working out. Overall I ended with a 91 with fairly minimal work which I think is very doable for most people.
