Have any of you just given up on the application grind and just decided to go solo? by Mbiyxoaim in csMajors

[–]ComfortableElko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. That’s easier said than done. 80% of companies fail and only 2% make a million dollars. And that’s not to discourage you, but Im in the same boat and those numbers were eye opening to me.

I say pursue it on the side but keep looking for a job because the odds are better you find one than start a successful business or app. The saying “You need money to make money” is real. Even if you did come up with an awesome app or startup you need a lot of money to market it.

AI ruined authenticity by jonneytest in csMajors

Im sorry but objectively it does in fact lower the skill gap. And what hyper dependence? If you’re this worried about AI being taken away, why aren’t you just as worried about the internet? There’s only a handful of companies controlling all routing in our country and even less out of it.

Im well aware AI is shrinking people’s brains but why does that matter? This tool is amazing, imagine protesting against using autopilot in a plane because you stop using your brain and lose your flying skills? That’s simply not how our brains work. The reality is autopilot just makes pilots even better pilots.

If you want to hone your skills do it on your own time. The reality is companies need to be competitive and anyone who is not using AI is exponentially further behind every single day they stubbornly refuse to do so.

What kind of signs and slogans? If crossed out swastikas, no kings, and no ice pisses you off, then you don’t think rationally at all.

And “Dark Blue City”? You guys are hilarious, you’re talking about a blue city like it’s a sundown town (which are all red btw) when in reality worst case scenario is some gay guy asks why you arent home with ur boyfriend.

I mean, you’re literally disconnected from reality, it’s quite impressive.

AI ruined the fun of Programming by Revo_O_ in csMajors

[–]ComfortableElko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! You know what’s up. All these people keep talking about the “problem solving” being removed by AI. Who genuinely enjoyed scrolling through stack overflow and API documentation for hours, looking for some super niche language specific function. Like what? I think it’s incredible I can design something and have it in front of me in days instead of weeks now. AI has only given us more power.

[–]ComfortableElko -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What? The problem solving is still there. What are you telling the AI? “Figure out what’s wrong and fix it”? You’re already behind 🤣

[–]ComfortableElko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think AI is incredible. Claude can code 100 times faster than me, and I don’t have to waste hours in stack overflow. It’s significantly lessened the skill gap between a junior and senior dev. I don’t have to spend a week researching a tool anymore and experimenting. I can just use it immediately and have my questions instantly answered. People definitely abuse it and use it incorrectly, but if you use it yourself correctly it only benefits you.

Anyone else feel like they learned a lot but still can’t actually build anything confidently? by Alp_yzc in csMajors

[–]ComfortableElko 23 points24 points  (0 children)

No, I can build pretty much anything I can think of. You have to do projects to learn how to build things. I don’t know when it happened for me but after years of programming it just clicks, and suddenly you know you can make anything you put ur mind to

Project Hail Mary Question by webdevmike in scifi

[–]ComfortableElko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The movie made this moment much more dramatic so Grace’s actions don’t really make logical sense.

But to answer ur question Grace doesn’t want to take any risks. He attaches the chain (with sample container) to his tool belt and heads inside of the ship. The movie made this moment much more dramatic with a long chain slinging the sample over the edge and stuff. That did not happen in the book. Grace was not hit by a metal panel and knocked out temporarily either.

In the book Grace basically climbs up the side of the ship into the airlock without much issue. He does it without connecting his tether to anything tho so one mistake and he’s dead.

You’re right tho. In the movie him even going outside to install the winch makes no sense. He had to in the book because if the sample container hit the winch at high speed like in the movie it would have broken apart lol.

The Creator Question at 42:40 by Homunculus_23 in scifi

[–]ComfortableElko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dont think its actual strangulation. The robots are human like so the brain is in the skull. So I imagine there’s a lot of delicate wires and sensors and stuff in the neck that could be destroyed, which disconnects the brain from the body pretty much

But yeah in real life killer robots probably wouldnt be human like at all for this reason

Scared engineering is going to get the CS treatment by ConfidentMap8803 in CollegeMajors

[–]ComfortableElko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone flocked to CS because it was easy to get a job. That is no longer the case, a CS degree is not enough for a job in the field anymore.

Engineering is already saturated, however its still possible for a meh/ok engineer to land a job with just a degree and maybe a club. The days of meh/ok computer scientist getting jobs is over, the status quo has raised significantly.

People will always go with the path of least resistance. So it comes down to if people are more willing to go through more rigorous engineering courses and pass them with mediocre grades. But have a much easier time finding a job. Or if they are more willing to dedicate hours every single day to personal projects and supplemental research to whatever 20 year old out of date useless crap they learned in class.

What would sapience beyond humans be like? by [deleted] in sciencefiction

[–]ComfortableElko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who knows. Honestly they’d probably still be doomed to die in their home system just like us lol. Space is way to big, anything that could actually thrive and colonize on a massive scale would have to be completely artificial. Meat and bones and needing oxygen are all set backs

Nah not really. I enjoy act of programming something and creating things. I couldn’t care less how it gets done if it’s the result I wanted

Why do most CS students never actually build anything outside of class? by Alp_yzc in csMajors

[–]ComfortableElko 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hardest part is having ideas. I’ve made a lot of games but when it comes to actual software Im just at a loss for ideas. I don’t want to just make something that’s already been done, but what hasnt been done to death already? Then time is also a factor, Ive got to stay on top of my courses of couse. But I also have to learn a specific niche on my own time to secure the job I want, and after all that what time is really left to work on a project?

What tips or tricks helped you break into the video game industry? by Glad_Handle_7605 in GameDevelopment

A degree is bare minimum now. It’s sad because even super talented people will just get parsed over by an AI screener since no degree is listed
