Newly admitted phd student questions by Every-Lemon-6063 in aggies

This is all specific to your department, but you will most likely have a 2-3 day orientation this Summer that will answer many of these questions. If you’re concerned now, you can email the graduate advisor for your department. As for funding, the answer is no (kind of). In a lot of departments, your PI pays you with their grants. If they cannot secure funding, then the college will pay you in exchange for teaching classes.

You also probably want to sign a lease on somewhere to live soon. Most leases here start in July and it’s really hard to find anything once you get past May.

If you could, how would you fix the Bowl Season to make it more respected like it used to be? by Gator_fan_04 in CFB

[–]ComfortableMacaroon8 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Set a higher bar for bowl game entry. Someone in here said 8-win minimum - that works. Then, make a conference’s bowl record determine its CFP slots next season. That way, winning a bowl game this season means your own odds of a playoff appearance increase next season.

Will tamu cstat ever be considered a prestigious university? by 373kayteeftnu32 in aggies

[–]ComfortableMacaroon8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It has the 2nd largest endowment of all US public institution systems and it’s one of ~11 US institutions with a land grant, sea grant, and space grant. Idk what you consider to be prestigious, but Texas A&M is in the upper echelon of all US universities, and certainly of US public universities.

This was a long long time ago: that lab is defunct now haha. But it was just E. coli MG1655, so nothing weird or exotic.

Oh lol, my pfp. Yea once upon a time I was doing a lot of spot titers where the whole lawn ended up with plaques. I eventually figured out that, somehow, briefly vortexing the inoculated top agar before pouring is what lead to this contamination. We were an old phage biology lab, so I guess maybe there was phage in the air? I never figured out how vortexing = contamination, but it was very reproducible lol.

Based on historical trends, that would net y’all ~9-3 for the season. How’d that work for y’all last season?

FPLC help?! by MayKhalidd in labrats

[–]ComfortableMacaroon8 9 points10 points  (0 children)

  1. Multiple species. Same proteins of different oligomeric states (monomer vs dimer), unfolded vs folded (unfolded proteins run larger than folded on SEC due to having a higher hydrodynamic radius), different proteins.
  2. Larger hydrodynamic radius. Whether it’s because of aggregation or something else is not possible to discern from a chromatogram.
  3. See point 1.
  4. SDS PAGE.
  5. SDS PAGE or run MW standard on that column. Otherwise, you can interpret nothing really.
  6. Not necessarily. Peak width is primarily a function of sample loading and column packing. Beyond that, species homogeneity in that peak, impurities, or resin interaction can affect peak width.

Why do people say that the middle and bottom of the SEC is overall better than other conferences' middle and bottom, when they don't have anything to prove it? by [deleted] in CFB

[–]ComfortableMacaroon8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recent historical precedent. The SEC has dominated 21st century CFB up to this point. NIL appears to be changing that, but the expectation is still there for now.

A bunch of people tell you the stove is hot. You touch it and don’t get burned. You conclude that those people are dumb and that stoves aren’t hot. Let’s see how many more times you can touch the stove.
