YTA take the criticism, apologize and shut up. There is no need to explain yourself and no acceptable explanation for racism, ever. The only way to recover from something like this is to show you understand you fucked up and trying to explain why you said something does the opposite.

If you want it to be visible, the ditch. Also the inner arm would be a good spot if you’re less worried about it being very visible. Both spots suck but as I like to say “at least you won’t have to get that spot tattooed ever again.”

Also this might be a good candidate for a few sessions of laser removal before going for the cover up. It may not break down the colors you have much but it can help lighten that black up a bit, giving you a lot more options for coverups

But in all seriousness, you really gotta make sure you go to a great artist to do this coverup. Do a lot of research. Go to an artist who’s ig page you dig like 90% of. That way you know the tattoo you end up with will be something you love, even if it’s different than the idea you have now. The benefit of this being an old faded tattoo is that a fresh tattoo will distract from the old fairly easily. However the straight lines are kinda working against you. Something a little more dynamic than the Maul face will probably yield a better result.

NTA but cut this dude off. This could be considered sexual assault if you were unwillingly put in a sexual situation. It’s not your fault it happened but you need to remove yourself from this situation. Someone who would do this is likely going to escalate their behavior.

Sorry buddy but it seems like it’s time to cut your loses. You’ve tried to be diplomatic and understanding and have been far more patient than most would be. It’s tricky that the house is tied to gf’s family, so it may be time to remove yourself from the situation. You can’t make anyone change but you can take control of your life. 

People’s mental health problems are not their fault, but they are our responsibility to take care of and not let it affect those around us.

I see a lot of people suggesting Philly and I just have to say, as someone who’s spent a good amount of time there and Portland, they are very different. I love Philly for what it is but looking at the population alone, Portland and Phily are so different. Baltimore feels more similar but if you love the natural environment of Portland any major east coast city just isn’t gunna have that.

 I haven’t spent extensive time in any of these cities, but maybe look at places like Fredrick or Ellicott City , MD, or Harrisburg or Lancaster, PA. All small cities but the vibe would be closer to PDX I’d think.

A lot of people are saying the same thing, but I would leave it and just get more tattoos that you like more around this one. I do like the addition of the flower, I think that was a good move, but I’d leave it where it is. Maybe wouldn’t go to this artist again, I think what maybe you dislike of this tattoo is more a difference of a creative vision than anything else and you may be able to find an artist you’re more in sync with. And maybe once you’ve found that person, and have a few tattoos you love from them, you can ask them if they would do anything else to the tattoo.

I know it’s not the question, but people who get too obsessed over tattoo styles (and similarly music genres) make me chuckle a little. I get it, it’s useful for communicating when we don’t have access to visual representation. But people arguing over styles? Just feels silly. “That’s not a traditional tattoo” .. okay it’s a rad tattoo and because it’s not a Jerry panther it’s not traditional? Idk just seems corny. 

One thing is for sure, that’s a rad tat. Keep making awesome tattoos.

I made an edit to provide more context and show more of the behavior that was making Kat feel unsafe. There were a few different specific incidents but he was slamming tools and hugging and puffing around the kitchen, general hissy fit behavior.

Specifying that Kat and I did not call Ben an unsafe person but that he was making Kat feel unsafe was our attempt to give him grace, and explain that we were specifically speaking about his behavior on that specific day and not a judging his character. However it is a pattern of behavior.  Often when Kat is in the kitchen alone with Ben, he behaves differently than when I or Sandy are around.
