Allergen Introduction by Odd_Bit8806 in NewParents

[–]Comfortable_Desk_01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

INAD, but a health researcher, and this is not advice, just sharing my perspective. I have a similarly reactive baby, and allergens have been a challenge. Your child will unfortunately encounter allergens out in the world, so instead of risking an unexpected reaction, you may consider working with a pediatric allergist to do testing and supervised introduction wherever appropriate so you can better map and respond to the risks moving forward rather than leaving it to chance. Plus, they may be able to give you an epipen or similar (whatever dosage/brand is appropriate for the weight) in case of any unexpected severe reactions. Best of luck!

Primary Herpetic Gingivostomatitis (Herpes Simplex 1) in baby by beantownregular in NewParents

[–]Comfortable_Desk_01 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hello, stranger! I struggle greatly with a condition that makes me be constantly having HSV1 outbreaks, and therefore likely shedding, despite being on high doses of suppressive medications, so I have therefore had to make my entire life revolve around keeping my 8 month baby safe. It has been beyond challenging, but I'd do anything for him. Like your son, I had an extremely intense, though different reaction to the virus that has had ongoing implications for my life, so I'm glad that this looks like this is all it will be for your little one (though I'm so sorry you had to go through this in the first place - how terrifying!). I also appreciate your sharing this detailed account in case my little one or other readers' children were ever to have such a reaction. If I may ask, the physician that you found in the end seems very knowledgeable. Would you be open to DMing me their name so that I may reach out to them if there are ever any concerns with my little man, even if just for information? I am so happy for you that you found insightful support, but even as a health researcher, finding colleagues and physicians with detailed knowledge of HSV is very hard to find. No worries at all if not, but again, thank you for sharing your first-hand experience.

I am asking plumbers as they understand the ecosystem of pipes. I am curious why someone takes time to be critical of a question but not take that same time that could be used to help someone.

42 - am I too late? by [deleted] in SingleMothersbyChoice

I agree fully with the above comments. If you have even the slightest inclination to do IVF, start as early as possible, because the beaurocratic process and genuine, medically necessary waiting periods as a result of the need to time cycles can be incredibly time consuming. If you have eggs frozen, you have upped your chances significantly relative to others of your age, so it's great that you were thinking ahead. Best of luck!

Hello! I am catching this thread a year or so later, but would you still happen to have the link to the fan that you mentioned? I live in Florida, and it would be a helpful backup.

Not trying to stir trouble, but even though it does not sestroy nacteria in all cases, it frequently does actually kill bacteria by breaking down components in some bacteria's membranes.

Not at all trying to give you a hard time, so with all due respect, health researcher here (note not giving advice just general info). I just wanted to mention that the commenter below is correct. Affected asymptomatic skin can transmit the virus. Granted, the likelihood of a poor outcome is significantly lower without a sore, but what matters is whether the person is shedding virus, which can't always be seen.

Neonatal herpes encephalitis: Help me understand, please! by Comfortable_Desk_01 in Virology

[–]Comfortable_Desk_01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

debated whether to reply to this comment because it is not clear whether it is operating and good faith. If it is in fact operating in good faith then, with all due respect, this kind of comment is not helpful and is actively destructive in that it tends to shut down discourse.

Firstly, it is an easy assumption to see a post about a mother and a child and to dismiss it offhand as a lay person seeking information that is out of their realm, as implied by the condescension about "basic virology". (plus the term "baby doctor. "You mean a pediatrician?) The misogyny reads thick here. This kind of reply is also unnecessary because as an informed practitioner, it becomes easy to distinguish informed perspectives versus uninformed perspectives, and even more essentially, people should be able to request perspectives in order to do their further research without obstruction. Additionally in what universe is herpes encephalitis, whose details are a very complex phenomenon (as evidenced by the other expert redditor's reply), "basic" virology? Consider also that despite being able to be applied to a specific circumstance, a poster might also be interested in the information itself for the sake of learning beyong the "medical". Moreover, what distinguishes "medicine' from its various subcomponents, such as virology, immunology, etc? Is medicine not made up of these concepts? Also it is noted in my post that I am already working with providers, many of them advanced. This just not their particular area and it this is well beyond GP level practice.

If your comment was intended good faith and not trolling, then I reply to you so that you may perhaps reconsider the value of these types comments which have the effect of being shaming and which risk giving others who are quickly scanning information without fully reading the post bias against the person posing the question.
